Tiny Steve Jobs: The Review

Outside of a few close employees, a couple fawning reporters, and his obsequious biographer, few people ever knew Steve Jobs, what with his being an antisocial tyrant. But now, you can own him. Or at least a tiny, unsettlingly realistic miniature computer genius version of him. But should you? Is it moral? Is it good? More »

Project Ayr: The Art Deco HTPC

Many people have a home theater PC sitting right next to their HDTVs. It’s not always the best-looking solution to manage your media, but oftentimes it’s the most functional. There’s no reason why your HTPC should look ugly. Check out this awesome design that Jeffrey Stephenson came up with.

Project Ayr is a fanless home theater PC that’s encased in an Art Deco-inspired mahogany shell. It’s definitely a nice retro style case and would look great sitting in your living room. Inside the wooden case, which has an aluminum frame, there’s an Intel Core i3 processor, 8GB of RAM, an Intel Cherryville SSD, 150W Pico PSU and an illuminated Silverstone HE02 passive heatsink, which occupies the majority of the case, and is cleverly integrated into the design.

Jeffery states that his custom design is “a solid state, fanless, no-moving-parts, dead silent home theater PC,” cutting down on the drone of fans while Jeff watches his favorite movies.

Skype Video Messaging for Mac, Android, iOS, limited to 20

This week the video chat program Skype has begun to roll out updates to Mac, Android, and iOS devices that will allow video messaging in addition to live-talk. This update is, incidentally, not ready for Microsoft products today even though Skype is owned by Microsoft. This means Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 will have to wait a bit longer to be able to leave short video recordings for their Skype buddies.

videomessages

Each video you’ll be leaving as a message will be able to be approximately 3 minutes in length. Inside the USA and the UK this update will be rolling out over the course of the day with other countries coming soon if enough interest is shown. Skype has currently not given a specific reason as to why each of the other major mobile and desktop operating systems have been included in this update while Windows was left out.

And this isn’t the only service that’s recently been boosted in its ability to leave messages when a person’s friends are away. Facebook’s mobile app was updated to include voice messaging just this past month, while BlackBerry 10 was introduced with ooVoo for 12-person video chat. The many different ways people are able to connect with one another aside from typing with their keyboard are quickly becoming a hot commodity – different, if not entirely better, that is.

And remember – if you want more than 20 video messages in the very near future (at least in this early Beta stage here at the start of this functionality) you’ll have to grab yourself a premium account – have at it! Have a peek at the timeline below for more Skype-related news to see where the service is going in the very near future. Also be sure to let us know if you see one of these updates and find it to be excellent!

GameStick kicks off pre-orders, reserve now for $79

The GameStick is getting ever so closer to getting into the hands of portable gamers around the world. PlayJam, the company behind the Android-powered portable gaming console, has announced that pre-orders for the GameStick are now live, and you can reserve your unit right now for only $79 on GameStick’s website.

While pre-orders are processed on the GameStick website, they’re powered by Amazon, so assuming you already have an Amazon account like everyone else, the checkout process should be rather simple and quick. Aside from the console and the controller, you can also pre-order a dock or a case for $24.99 and $9.99, respectively.

As far as availability is concerned, it seems like we’re looking at a release date of April 30, which is revealed during the checkout process. PlayJam itself says that “pre-ordered devices will ship immediately after fulfillment of the initial Kickstarter run in April,” so the date at checkout seems to be accurate at this point.

However, PlayJam has also noted that Kickstarter backers will receive their units first, so those pre-ordering right now will be placed at the end of the line, so it could be several weeks to several months before pre-orderers receive their consoles. The only question remaining is, will the GameStick outdo the OUYA? Or will it be the other way around?

Black HTC One Press Shot Gets Attention

Black HTC One Press Shot Gets Attention

We are getting very close to the HTC One, aka HTC M7, launch next week, and so far, the images that have leaked look quite interesting, including this black HTC One photo. They show a (seemingly) slim and nice design in either black or silver color. The design is minimalist and the build-quality seems even higher than what HTC did for the HTC One X, which we reviewed last year. On the photo you can see HTC Sense 5, which is quite a departure (design-wise) from previous versions. For the time being, HTC seems to continue investing heavily in its custom user interface that served it well in the past. (more…)

BitTorrent’s SoShare file-sharing service launches in beta, lets you send up to 1TB for free

BitTorrent's SoShare filesharing launches in beta, lets you send up to 1TB for free

BitTorrent announced last month that it was working on a file-syncing app dubbed Sync, and it’s now debuted a public beta of a somewhat complimentary file-sharing service called SoShare (previously announced in an alpha state as simply Share). The hook with SoShare is that it will let you send huge files (up to 1TB) for free in a single data transfer, which is handled through the BitTorrent browser plug-in. What’s more, while you’ll of course have to sign up for an account to send the files, the recipients of the file don’t necessarily need an account themselves; you can simply make a public link available or send an email notification (they will need the browser plug-in though). Those files will remain active for 30 days unless you choose to have them expire sooner. Hit the source link to sign up for the beta if you’re interested in trying it yourself.

PSA: Asteroid 2012 DA14 will pass the Earth at 2:00pm ET

Image

If you fancy getting cosy with an asteroid that’s got the destructive power of a nuclear arsenal, today’s your lucky day. The wittily-named 2012 DA14 will sail past Australia at a distance of 17,510 miles early this afternoon, and while it won’t be visible with the naked eye, NASA’s got a few telescopes that’ll do the job. It’ll come into range at around 2:00pm ET, and is expected to be at its brightest about 25 minutes afterward. If your boss is sympathetic and you don’t wanna miss a thing, head on past the break to catch the livestream, which started at 12:00pm ET. As for us? We’re gonna spend the next few hours looking for Bruce Willis’ phone number.
