Samsung SodaStream Refrigerator Is One Step from Fulfilling a Childhood Dream

Growing up, there were three things that I wanted to possess so badly I could hardly stand it. One was the General Lee, the other was Heather Thomas, and the third was a refrigerator that had a soft drink dispenser in the door. I don’t think I expected too much. While I’ve grown out of the General Lee phase, and Heather Thomas isn’t as good looking as she once was, I still really want that refrigerator that dispenses Dr. Pepper out of door.

I’ve been waiting for someone to come up with this device for years and it looks like Samsung is now only a small step away from making my soft drink dreams come true.

Samsung has unveiled a four-door refrigerator that dispenses sparkling water from the door. The sparkling water portion of the refrigerator is courtesy of SodaStream and uses a 60L CO2 cylinder concealed inside of the refrigerator door.

The refrigerator has a button on the front next to the ice and normal water dispensers that allow users to choose from three different carbonation levels for their sparkling water. The refrigerator is model number RF31FMESBSR and will launch in the US this April for $3899(USD). Dreams certainly don’t come cheap.

All I need is this refrigerator, a big box of Dr. Pepper syrup, and some ingenuity and I will possess my dream. I wonder if Heather Thomas can drive the General Lee over to help me. I think my wife will understand.

The After Math: Balsillie cashes out, Dell goes private and OUYA hits 481

The After Math Balsillie cashes out, Dell goes private and OUYA hits 481

We crunched the numbers just after CES, while the organizers were barely tearing down hundreds of lavishly lit booths. Now, we’re going to be making it a regular thing, pulling together and musing on the week’s vital statistics. This time around, we watch iPads make an impression on computer shipments, while Dell reorganizes and goes private — with a little help from Microsoft. All that and more awaits beyond the break.

How Many Twitter Lists Is Too Many?

Twitter lists are a very good organizational tool. They let you keep tabs on the people you don’t necessarily want to follow, and they can keep you on top of a very specific subject. More »

Google Maps goes inside NFL stadium for first time

The NFL season may be over now, with the Baltimore Ravens being the Super Bowl champions for this year (correctly predicted by EA’s Madden game), but Google is giving users even more football action, by taking us inside NFL stadiums for the first time starting with Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana — home of the 2006 Super Bowl champions, the Indianapolis Colts.

Screen Shot 2013-02-15 at 11.05.45 AM

Google is calling the experience a “VIP” 360-degree look at the stadium from numerous angles. Google’s tour takes you onto the field, into the stands, and even into the locker room at Lucas Oil Stadium. NFL fans of all kinds can experience what an NFL stadium is like, including all of the VIP suites that most of us never get to step into on game day.

Google says that this is just the beginning, and they plan to add even more 360-degree imagery from other stadiums as well. In the meantime, however, this will give you a chance to tour the Colts’ home field and get a sense of what it’s like to be there. Personally, I’ve been to Lucas Oil Stadium several times, but getting a look inside the locker room and the special VIP suites was really cool.

Lucas Oil Stadium is one of the newer NFL stadiums in the US. It was built in 2008 and was even home to last year’s Super Bowl XLVI. The stadium can seat just over 62,000 spectators, but can fit even more people during other events, such as the 2010 NCAA men’s basketball Final Four, where well over 70,000 spectators packed the stadium.

Skype starts testing video voicemail feature on OS X, Android and iOS, we go hands-on (video) (update)

Skype starts testing video voicemail

Facebook and Vine were just the beginning — you should have known that. Especially once the biggest social network in the world started dipping its toes in the VoIP pool. Skype isn’t about to let others encroach on its hard won territory without a fight. The Microsoft-owned messaging platform has started testing what amounts to a video voicemail feature on OS X, Android and iOS, something that had already been hinted at in its updated TOS. Why those operating systems at first, without any word about Windows or Windows Phone, we’re unsure. But it’s a safe bet Redmond’s own platforms will get the feature sooner rather than later. Currently users in the US and UK should be seeing the option, just dig a bit as it might be hidden behind a more actions or overflow icon, as it is on Android. Customers are getting 20 free video messages to start, though we weren’t able to wrangle any further details out of the company regarding pricing.

(Update: While we still have some unanswered questions regarding pricing, Skype did say that unlimited voice messaging will be included as part of a premium subscription.)

(Update 2: A Skype spokesperson reached out to us with the following statement about availability:

“Users in these markets across all Windows desktop and mobile platforms can receive messages, too. We will have send capability in Windows by end of April. In the meantime, we continue to test this new feature in its early release.”

April isn’t ideal, but it’s better than nothing.)

Japan Uses Robot Rats to Terrorize Real Rats

Lab rats have it bad enough having to jump through hoops and perform in order to be studied, but now life just got worse for the furry rodents. Scientists at Japan’s Waseda University have created a robotic rat designed to terrorize their organic lab rats, inducing stress and depression so their reactions can be studied.
RobotRat
Scientists need to depress rats in order to do things like test drugs for depression. I guess it’s hard to make a rat depressed, but with a robot rat harassing them constantly, they will be sad sacks in no time. The robot can be programmed to chase or attack a rat, or can become its only source of food.

Talk about psychological torture. These rats will be really bummed out and soon they will fear robots just like us.

Cuddling Animals Snapped At Miami’s Jungle Island (PHOTOS)

Miami may have more than its fair share of cheating philanderers, but there’s at least some romance and tender loving going on in this city.

Thursday, an ‘Only In Miami’-style Valentine’s Day message was spotted above a 305 highway: ‘I <3 Cathy Bro' was spelled out in red solos cops in the cage over a pedestrian overpass.

Meanwhile the staff at Miami’s Jungle Island had more proof that our denizens know how to turn on the charm.

Children Of Immigrants Are More Educated Than Their Peers

The kids are doing all right.

At least that’s the case for the adult children of immigrants who were born and raised in the United States, according to a recent study from the Pew Research Center. The comprehensive report shows that in many ways, second-generation Americans are not only more successful than foreign-born residents of the United States, but they’re doing better than the overall population of the country.

They are less likely than both the foreign-born and general populations to live in poverty and they are more educated. They have virtually the same rate of homeownership and the same median household income as the general population, and they beat first generation immigrants on all of those markers.

Elite Quarterbacks? Matt Ryan, Tony Romo, Jay Cutler Among Candidates To Face Status Question

By Joe Fortenbaugh, National Football Post

It’s a loaded question that disguises itself in many forms. Eli’s version came in 2011 when the Super Bowl XLII MVP was asked if he thought he belonged in the same class as Tom Brady. Joe Flacco’s version came the following year when the Baltimore quarterback was asked where he thought he ranked among NFL quarterbacks. But no matter the shape in which the question presents itself, it’s always asking the same thing.

This terrifying video of a meteor explosion over Chelyabinsk, Russia, is one of many angles of the fiery event captured by amateurs Friday.
