With the fiasco that was the Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s melting lithium-ion batteries, it would appear that new Airbus models will be skipping inclusion entirely. Beer Belly Myth: Study Claims That Beer Isn’t Tied To Weight Gain, Has Health Benefits

Will drinking too much beer give you a beer belly? A study says that the phenomenon is a myth.

The Telegraph reports that nutritionist Dr. Kathryn O’Sullivan recently authored the study, titled “Beer & Calories; A Scientific Review,” on behalf of the beer industry. She found that there’s no conclusive scientific evidence that suggests beer causes weight gain.

A couple of things strike us as funny, though. The report is nowhere to be found online, it was supposedly sponsored by the beer industry and O’Sullivan gives us no indication as to what the “beer industry” even means.

There’s No Such Thing as a Fake Apple Product

By now, the year-old claim that Apple makes people work on fake products is well-known. How scandalous. To ensure the loyalty of new hires, the company puts them on “dummy” projects before letting them work on the real goods. Too bad it’s not true. More »

Ed Markey, Stephen Lynch Competitive In Massachusetts Senate Primary Poll

Massachusetts’ Democratic Senate primary is shaping up to be a competitive one, according to a new poll of the race to decide who will replace Secretary of State John Kerry.

According to the WBUR/MassINC telephone survey, Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) leads Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) 38 percent to 31 percent in the primary, with 26 percent of respondents still unsure about who they will vote for and 4 percent saying they’d vote for another candidate.

Markey held a 42 percent to 25 percent lead among registered Democrats in the survey, but Lynch held a lead among unenrolled voters who said they would vote in the Democratic primary (unenrolled voters in Massachusetts may vote in either primary).

Facebook wins court battle that forces Europeans to use real names

Facebook and Germany have been going back and forth for years, but the most recent development was the disagreement between the two entities as far as using real names or pseudonyms. Facebook wants its users to use their real names, but Germany insisted otherwise. However, Facebook just won the court battle that will force Europeans to use their real names.

facebook

After a German court initially ruled that Facebook couldn’t force people to use their real names, a successful appeal in another German court has ruled otherwise. However, the ruling will yet again be appealed by the Schleswig-Holstein state’s data protection body, who say that using real names “breaches German privacy laws and European rules designed to protect free speech online.”

The administrative court in northern German Schleswig argued that Germany’s privacy laws weren’t applicable because Facebook has its entire European headquarters in Ireland, which is a country with different sets of laws and rules associated with privacy and using real names online. However, it doesn’t seem likely that the ruling will be overturned yet again.

Facebook argues that its real-name policy protects users, rather than invading their privacy on the internet. This really only seems like a huge deal if you’re pretending to be someone else on the internet, whether it’d be for parody purposes or to stalk someone else online (both of which are unnecessary), but it seems a lot of Germans are into that kind of thing. However, it won’t last much longer.

Food Safety Scandals That Rocked The World

The current horsemeat scandal in Europe has gone from news that traces of horsemeat were found in burgers in Ireland to a recall of 10 million burgers in the U.K. Since the recall, more “beef” products were discovered to contain horsemeat, some made with nearly 100 percent horsemeat. As a result, plants have been shut down and tensions among various European countries involved in the scandal are high.

The horsemeat scandal is an issue of food safety, not because people are getting sick but rather because people are expecting one product and getting another. It is an issue of food quality as well, and a powerful example that the global food chain is a complicated and messy affair.

While food safety is a topic that often makes headlines — there are constant food recalls happening in the U.S. on a weekly basis — seldom does a food safety issue become a global topic. In addition to horsemeat, here are five other recent food safety scandals that have rocked the world:

Orlando DeWitt, North Dakota Man, Stabbed During Threesome After Refusing To Change Positions

A ménage à trois turned into a bordel monstre when a North Dakota man was stabbed after refusing to change positions.

Orlando DeWitt was allegedly stabbed in the arm by Fargo resident Ashley Hunter, whom he had previously met in prison, reports The Smoking Gun. The tryst went down Feb. 8, after the two men left a Fargo bar and went back to Hunter’s house for a party.

According to The Smoking Gun, DeWitt told police that he and a female partier began kissing on a couch, when Hunter joined in. The woman “began to perform oral sex on Hunter” while DeWitt had intercourse with her, but when Hunter asked to switch positions DeWitt refused. That is when the threesome took a turn for the worse. Hunter reportedly threatened to “f**k him up” and “kill him,” then pulled a 12-inch butcher knife from his couch and stabbed DeWitt twice as he attempted to run away.
