WhatsApp for Android gets Holothemed makeover in latest beta

Despite being one of the most successful software entities on Android, WhatsApp’s been a little late to adopt certain design guidelines preferred by Google’s mobile platform. Thankfully, the renowned messaging application appears to be ready to take on a more elegant UI, with the most recent beta bundling in Mountain View’s praised Holo theme and, as noticed by some Android Police readers, expandable notifications for all. However, folks attracted by the idea of going Holo in WhatsApp will have to snag the goods straight from the source, as the changes have yet to make their way onto Google Play.

Fancy Samsung refrigerator dispenses sparkling water right from the door

I think most home appliances are rather boring devices. I’ve always felt that way, but as a kid I seriously wanted a refrigerator that would dispense soft drinks right out of the door. It was my second biggest childhood dream right next to Heather Thomas. I think we can all admit that would be incredibly awesome, unless you don’t like soft drinks. Samsung has made my dream of owning a Dr. Pepper dispensing refrigerator one step closer to reality with its new RF31FMESBSR 36” Four-Door Refrigerator.

At first glance you may be wondering how exactly this refrigerator can have four doors. The refrigerator section is on top of this unit and has side-by-side doors that open. The refrigerator also has a pair of freezer drawers that slide out to make it easier to find your frozen pizzas and chicken nuggets.

Like most modern refrigerators, the Samsung unit has ice and a cold water dispenser built in to the door. That water is chilled and filtered before it’s squirted out into your glass. Controls in the front door allow the user to choose between normal ice cubes or crushed ice. The feature that sets this refrigerator apart is that there’s also a button available allowing the user to select three different levels of carbonation for sparkling water.

Honestly, I find sparkling water rather disgusting, but I hope some geeky tinkerers out there can figure out how to introduce soft drink syrup into the mix. Seriously, it can’t be that hard, a little drilling, a small pump, and some hose and my childhood dreams have come true. The sparkling water system uses a standard SodaStream 60L CO2 cylinder stored inside a small area in the left side refrigerator door. The fridge has 30.5 ft.³ of storage and will be available in April for $3899.

Julianne Hough: Ryan Seacrest Used To Call Me ‘Future Mrs. Seacrest’ Before They Were Dating (VIDEO)

Julianne Hough stopped by “Chelsea Lately,” and like any young woman in love, she was just glowing as she talked about her boyfriend, Ryan Seacrest. She talked about how they first met. Like many couples, they met at work. They just happen to have very unusual jobs.

“We used to actually pass each other in the hall because ‘American Idol’ and ‘Dancing With The Stars’ were across the hall from each other,” she said.

Ryan Seacrest was apparently a man on a mission, and very confident in the end goal. Hough said that he would call her “Future Mrs. Seacrest.”

Bigfoot genome paper finally published

Back in November, I talked a bit about a team of scientists that were claiming to have verified using DNA study that Bigfoot does exist. The team promised that they would have a paper outlining their findings published to allow others to look at their work. The paper has finally been published and apparently, it took some significant doing to publish.

A significant doing involves the fact that the team involved in the publishing of the paper had to purchase their own online scientific journal to get the paper published at all. The paper was published on an online journal called De Novo and perhaps unsurprisingly the scientists are trying to charge $30 to anyone wanting to view their research paper. Ars Technica was able to get their hands on a free sample of the paper and turned it over to someone who actually has a background in DNA and genetic research to peruse.

The researchers involved in the project are predominantly forensic experts and collected a number of samples from across North America. However, the expert that Ars has interpreting the results of scientific study says that the results from the genetic testing he sees comes to a different result than what the writers of the paper argue. The scientists who authored the paper believe that the data points to Bigfoot being a recent hybridization between modern humans and an unknown primate species.

Ars’ expert says that the mitochondrial DNA in the samples clusters with that of modern humans. He also notes that the DNA sequences come from a variety of different humans, 16 different to be exact. Most of the species were either European or Middle Eastern region with some being African and American Indian. The expert says that given the timing of the interbreeding only Native American sequences should be seen.

The expert also notes that the nuclear genome has concerning results. He says that sometimes the tests performed picked up human DNA and other times the tests did not. He also notes the tests failed entirely at times. He says that the product resulting from the DNA amplification that was performed on samples look like test results that you would expect when the reaction didn’t amplify the intended sequence. He also notes that some results show patches of both double and single stranded DNA intermixed, which would be expected if two distantly related species had their DNA mixed. The expert says the results point to modern human DNA intermingled with some sort of contaminant. Bigfoot is apparently not so scientifically identified after all. My eight-year-old daughter will be crushed.

How State Boundaries Would Look Based on Equal Population

While it’s not for us to suggest that state boundaries are in any way arbitrary, artist Neil Freeman has re-imagined what a map of the US would look like if each and every state had an identical population count. More »

Meteorite shower crashes into Russia (video)

Meteorite shower crashes in Russia video

A meteorite shower has crash landed across Russia’s Ural region, injuring over 250 900 people and damaging buildings in six cities. Residents in Chelyabinsk reported shaking ground, windows shattering and car alarms going off as the rocks fell to Earth. Officials in the country say that the shower began after a larger meteor disintegrated in the lower atmosphere, causing the fragments to wreak the (currently) non-lethal havoc. If you’d like to compare how wrong (or right) Michael Bay got it in Armageddon, head on past the break for some footage.
