WSJ: Airbus to drop lithium-ion batteries from A350 to meet delivery schedule

Airbus dropping lithiumion batteries from the A350 in the interest of timeliness

Amidst the ongoing brouhaha over rival Boeing‘s Dreamliner-grounding battery troubles, Airbus has decided not to use lithium-ion batteries in its newest aircraft, the A350, according to industry officials cited by the Wall Street Journal. The European plane maker is said to be making the change in an effort to stick to its plan of pressing the jet into commercial service by the middle of next year. While the craft’s early test flights this summer will still make use of four lithium-ion batteries for on-ground electrical power and as backup in the air as originally intended, it will be delivered to airlines with conventional nickel-cadmium batteries instead. Safety considerations are undoubtedly part of the picture, but since the A350 is already behind schedule by a couple of years, its manufacturer can’t afford any further delays — anticipated in case regulators find fault with the use of lithium-ion packs in flights. As Boeing struggles to find a fix and get the 787 back into the air, it seems Airbus has taken the easy way out.

Astronomers are completely confident that the 150-foot-wide asteroid 2012 DA14 is not going to hit us, passing “only” at 17,200 miles from Earth—the closest encounter with an asteroid ever predicted. It’s a close call, but we will be safe. But then again, a meteorite just exploded in Russia. So what would really happen if their calculations are wrong? More »

According to Elemental, the key to successfully deploying multi-screen content is by applying software flexibility to powerful hardware, something it says the combination of NVIDIA’s hardware and its own software provides. The company has tailored its Elemental Server and Elemental Live solutions specifically to NVIDIA’s Tesla GPU offerings.

NVIDIA’s General Manager of Media and Entertainment Greg Estes offered this statement: “Elemental pioneered the use of GPUs for high-quality video transcoding, and they continue to innovate by developing new platforms that fully harness the massively parallel processing power of Tesla accelerators. The increased density and throughput available with these new Elemental products will continue to set the standard for enterprise video processing in the industry.”

This move is a step towards meeting an ever-growing market, with IPTV subscriptions anticipated to double by the time 2016 rolls around. According to the research firm TDG, 65-percent of all households in the United States will watch 58 billion hours of video and TV shows on tablet devices by 2017. By combining its solutions with NVIDIA’s GPUs, Elemental is equipping itself to meet the ever-growing demands of the industry.

Opera buys Skyfire, wants its video and smartphone optimization expertise

In a sudden joining of former leaders in the mobile browser arena that have seen their fortunes turn, Opera announced tonight that it has acquired Skyfire for about $155 million in cash and stock. According to the press release, Opera believes one of the things the two can help each other with is its WebPass program that provides short-term mobile data, by further optimizing user’s data requirements. Skyfire CEO Jeffrey Glueck will become an executive vice president at Opera and oversee joint offerings for the two, as well as remain CEO of Skyfire as an independent but wholly-owned subsidiary of Opera.

If you’re still using Skyfire don’t expect it to go away anytime soon, as the two indicate its browser will continue to be developed and supported. The company says three large US mobile operators are already customers for its Rocket Optimizer tech, meant to speed up all manner of data even as mobile connections have gone from dial-up to broadband speeds. Opera claims its advertising chops can help the Skyfire Horizon mobile browser and toolbar applications as well. The deal is expected to close before mid-March, and the two will be taking meetings at MWC 2013 later this month to show mobile operators how much better they are together.
