NRA Brands Obama State Of The Union Speech ‘Fraudulent Manipulation’

WASHINGTON — National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre on Thursday renewed his call for armed guards in every school and said President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address showed the president cares only about his “gun control agenda” and not about the safety of children.

“In an hourlong speech, nowhere were the words ‘school safety’ to be found,” LaPierre told an audience at the National Wild Turkey Federation in Nashville, Tenn. “Less than two months after saying we had to look at our schools, the president made not one mention, in his entire speech, of the need to improve security for our schoolchildren.”

LaPierre’s accusation conveniently ignored the contents of Obama’s speech. As he began his mention of gun control, the president told Congress, “What I’ve said tonight matters little if we don’t come together to protect our most precious resource -– our children.”

Neighbors Build Sled To Get Pregnant Connecticut Woman To Hospital During Blizzard (VIDEO)

Quick thinking by a group of neighbors helped get a pregnant woman to the hospital — on a makeshift sled.

On Sunday morning, shortly after blizzard ‘Nemo’ had dropped 3 ft. of snow on the town of Naugatuck, Conn., mother-of-four Lauri Wood went into labor with her fifth child. According to NBC, the Woods’ car was buried under snow and the neighborhood’s roads were completely unpassable.

But a friend of Wood’s daughter had a solution. According to Darien Patch, Kyle Wade ripped the top from a cargo carrier –- typically seen on car hoods -– and made a sled to pull her down the road.

NYT reporter responds to Tesla Model S data logs, impropriety accusations

Data logs of the Model S that left New York Times reporter John Broder stranded revealed a “violation of common sense” according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, but Broder is now offering his side of the story to help make sense of the information. According to the journalist, he wasn’t provided with “detailed instructions on maximizing the driving range” before his trip, and he placed roughly a dozen calls to the folks at Tesla about how he could address the car’s declining range and make it to his destination. Apparently, some of the doubt-instilling data was caused by following the advice of Tesla representatives on how to maximize the vehicle’s charge. For example, Broder says the auto lost a drastic amount of juice while parked in the cold over night, and a low-power one-hour charge was recommended by Tesla reps in conjunction with driving at a moderate speed to “restore” the lost power.

Broder also mentions that he didn’t drive around a parking lot to run down the battery, but did so since he couldn’t find the poorly-lit and unmarked Supercharger at night. New York Times Public Editor Margaret Sullivan called Musk several times throughout the day and couldn’t get ahold of him, but plans to ask the company’s founder to open source the logs and other information. Come Friday, Sullivan expects to have some conclusions on the matter. Click the bordering source link to see Broder’s entire point-by-point response to the logs for yourself.

comScore: Smartphones and tablets changing the digital landscape

ComScore has released is 2013 U.S Digital Future in Focus report, which looks at the digital landscape and how it is shifting, focusing on trends in online video, mobile, e-commerce, search, and social media. While the report has a lot of interesting things to say about how social activity, online video, and search are changing, one of the most interesting aspects are mobile devices, which are altering the way users interact with the digital world, creating a “multi-platform” landscape.

According to the report, smartphones led the way in 2012 mobile usage, having achieved 50-percent market penetration last year. Meanwhile, tablets also saw an increase in usage throughout 2012. Says comScore, this rapid increase in mobile device usage has fragmented the digital landscape, with the average everyday consumer now dividing his or her time between multiple devices.

Following in line with this is online video, which is growing as the average consumer expands beyond regular TV to include a variety of digital video content in their lives. As such, monetization of online video is picking up speed, with the research firm pointing out that YouTube made large updates to its advertising methods last year. Says the report, expect that online video advertisement will continue to ramp up throughout 2013.

Other areas of the report look at social media, which shows Facebook as dominating with 5 of every 6 minutes spent on social networks being specific to the company. Other social networks increased throughout 2012, however, including Twitter, Pinterest, and Tumblr. For search, Google was still top dog, with Bing coming in at #2. A shift was noticed, however, with last year showing the first ever signs of desktop-search usage decreasing as users gravitate to mobile devices and “vertical-specific” searches.

Tomb Raider Limited Edition Xbox 360 Controller Priced

Tomb Raider Limited Edition Xbox 360 Controller Priced

Tomb Raider fans are eagerly awaiting for March 5th when Tomb Raider Rebooted will be launched. Alongside the game, fans can also get their hands on limited edition Xbox 360 controllers. Available for pre-orders from the Xbox website and priced at $59.99, the blood-red controller was first revealed at the Consumer Trade Show 2013 in Las Vegas. Microsoft’s Major Nelson had said, “Developed in collaboration with artists at Crystal Dynamics, the design of the controller features a two-layer color finish with laser etching to create a realistic and tactile worn appearance inspired by Lara’s iconic climbing axe and the tourniquets that result from the adventure in her intense origin story, as told in this latest title.”

The controller also features a customizable D-pad which can be changed to a disc from the standard plus and has a range of 30 feet so you can move around as much as Lara does in the game. The controller also comes with a download code for an exclusive Tomb Raider Multiplayer character Scavenger Archer. This should prove to be one a good addition to any collector of Tomb Raider items.

Woman Uses Digital Board to Break Up With Her Lover

Woman Uses Digital Board to Break Up With Her Lover

A woman in Manchester (England) rented a digital board to tell her ex-boyfriend that she’s breaking up. The digital board is placed at a petrol station in Manchester, where the ex-boyfriend usually takes his lunch . It appears that the woman was not only angry, but wanted to humiliate her ex-boyfriend as well.  The message on the board read “I’m leaving you for Gary. Your clothes are at your mum’s. I’ve change the locks.” “Sorry to do this on Valentine’s Day. Laura.”

Interestingly Jordan Wilson took a picture of the digital board and tweeted it. Now the picture has gone viral on twitter.  We don’t really know what caused “Laura” to take this course of action against “Dan”. We don’t even know why she would choose Valentine’s Day to do such a cruel thing. Maybe “Dan” deserves it. Or maybe “Laura” is just a really mean woman. This act goes on to show that human psyche is just weird when it comes to relationships. Would you ever break up in such public (and cruel) manner? Have you seen such break-ups before?

Adobe says Acrobat and Reader vulnerabilities exploited with malicious PDF

Adobe has announced that two vulnerabilities with its Acrobat and Reader applications are being exploited in the wild via a malicious PDF file attached to an email. If a user attempts to open the PDF file, their system will be attacked via the critical vulnerabilities, as well as the potential for the application to crash. Adobe is working on a rolling out a fix for the vulnerabilities, but until then users should exercise caution when downloading attachments.

The PDF attack targets Windows users, but all three major operating system – Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux – are affected by the vulnerabilities CVE-2013-0640 and CVE-2013-0641. Until the company gets a patch pushed out, it recommends that users update their anti-malware software to the latest definitions, and ensures that it is running at all times when using the applications.

Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat XI versions 11.0.0.1 and earlier for Windows and OS X, Reader X 10.1.5 and earlier for Windows and OS X, and Reader 9.5.3 and earlier 9.x versions for all Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux are all affected by the two vulnerabilities. Windows users running Reader XI and Acrobat XI can both take steps to protect themselves until the fix is released, however.

Within the applications, Windows users running the above mentioned versions of either XI application should enable “Protected View,” which can be found under Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced). From that menu, select “Files from potentially unsafe locations,” which will help guard against malicious PDF files. Admins can enable Protected View in the registry for enterprises with security concerns.

NYPD Stop-And-Frisk Policy Challenged In Court By ‘The Wire’ Actor

NEW YORK — Gbenga Akinnagbe went on trial Thursday. The actor who played Chris Partlow on HBO’s “The Wire” wasn’t in a Brooklyn courtroom for any of the crimes his character on the TV drama committed (murder, murder and more murder). Instead, Akinnagbe and three other men are accused of blocking a sidewalk.

The case, which they took to trial despite a prosecution offer of a conditional dismissal, is bigger than the charge suggests, according to the defense. The defendants are putting the New York City Police Department’s stop-and-frisk policy, and tolerance for free speech, up for judgment.

Akinnagbe, a Nigerian American with an easy smile and a dedication to social issues, has already been to court seven times for pre-trial issues by his count. Fifteen months have passed since Nov. 1, 2011, when he and more than a dozen others were arrested during a stop-and-frisk protest in front of the police 73rd Precinct house.
