China pledges to grow broadband coverage to 70% of households

Mobile internet access? Yeah, that’s pretty popular in China, but according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, household access is on the rise, too. The country says it will be expanding FTTH connections by 35 million households in 2013, putting 4M broadband connections (or faster) in over 70 percent of Chinese households. The announcement is part of China’s 2013 broadband initiative, which aims to expand connectivity across the nation, including rural areas and schools. By the end of the year, China can expect to have 180,000 new 3G base stations and 1.3 million new WiFi hotspots. Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid can now drive in California HOV lanes

When most people think about the state of California, several things come to mind. Things like good weather, beaches, and traffic to name a few. California also has a significant problem with air pollution leading the state to have some of the country’s most stringent requirements for zero emissions and low emissions vehicles.

Power_of_Choice_570

Ford has announced that its plug-in hybrid Fusion Energi has been approved for use in California HOV lanes. To qualify to use the California HOV lanes, the vehicle has qualify for tax rebates through the California Clean Vehicle Rebate Program overseen by CARB. The Fusion Energi is eligible for $1500 in tax rebates through that program in addition to the $3750 federal tax rebate.

The Fusion Energi is the third Ford vehicle to qualify for those incentives. The California rebate program also stipulates that the vehicle has to offer at least 45 mpg on the highway and be certified as a super ultra-low emissions vehicle by the US EPA. Ford says that having access to the carpool lanes can reduce the time spent behind the wheel and emissions released into the atmosphere.

The Fusion Energi also has an electric only mode allowing the user to drive up to 21 miles without using gasoline. Buyers of these vehicles in California do have to have the HOV lane sticker applied. Presumably, the draw that having a vehicle such as this that can access the HOV lanes comes in the fact that you can do it without having passengers that would be required in a normal vehicle. Ford isn’t clear on that aspect, so anyone who lives in California and is familiar with this rule let us know if that’s accurate.

CG Audrey Hepburn Commercial Looks Like The Real Deal

Audrey Hepburn is probably one of the most iconic women in the film and fashion industry, with many attempting to recreate her beauty and sense of style. In fact it seems that task proved to be quite difficult as production company Framestore found out when attempting to create an advertisement for chocolate company, Galaxy. The original idea was to use an Audrey Hepburn double and that’s what the production company set out to do. They scanned the double’s face and did a live shooting before return back to their studio for further refinement. Unfortunately the facial scan did not prove to be as accurate as they thought and failed to capture certain iconic nuances, such as Hepburn’s eyes and smile.

They ultimately decided that CG was the way to go and the results can be seen in the video above, which we have to admit looks stunning and almost as if Hepburn was still alive and acted in the commercial. If you’d like to find out more about the process in which Framestore went through, you can find a detail description at Galaxy’s website. In the meantime if you have a minute to spare, do check out the video above and let us know what you think!

Samsung Galaxy S4 Rumored To Feature Different Chipsets For Different Regions

Samsung Galaxy S4 Rumored To Feature Different Chipsets For Different RegionsAs some of you guys might have heard, the Samsung Galaxy S4 could be launched with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 chipset instead of Samsung’s own Exynos 5. The rumors are suggesting that this is because of production issues, perhaps not being able to produce enough to meet initial demand. Now if you were a bit bummed by that news, all is not lost because according to a note to investors from a JPMorgan Securities (via Taipei Times), it is possible that the Galaxy S4 will launch with different versions. One version will feature the Exynos 5 8-core chipset, while the other will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 chipset.

Apparently the version with the Exynos 5 chipset will be launched for the European market, while those in the US will get the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 version. This is not the first time Samsung has done this. Back in 2012, the Samsung Galaxy S3 was launched in the US with the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset as Samsung’s Exynos chipset was not equipped with an LTE modem. Since the Galaxy Note 2 managed to overcome that problem, we’re not sure why the discrepancy. However since there has not been any official word from Samsung, we suggest you not get too worked up yet and wait for Samsung’s announcement on the 14th of March for the full details.

Blackberry 10 Will Be Available Across The US In A Few Weeks

Blackberry 10 Will Be Available Across The US In A Few WeeksAre you looking forward to getting your hands on the Blackberry Z10? We’re sure that many Blackberry fans are, but when exactly will it launch? Well the good news is that based on a recent tweet by Blackberry, “BlackBerry 10 will be available across the U.S. in a few short weeks”. Unfortunately no specific dates were mentioned, but we guess that’s as official as it gets. No mention of which carriers it will be arriving on either, but so far based on previous reports, T-Mobile could be getting the Z10 in mid-March, while Verizon’s Z10 could see a launch in April. We’ve seen photos of the Z10 with Verizon’s branding so we guess a soon-ish launch wouldn’t be completely out of the question. We will keep our eyes peeled for more news and specific dates, so check back with us at a later date for the details.

Instagram, Twitter posts begin to flow from North Korean 3G network

Instagram, Twitter posts begin to flow from North Korean 3G network

This week, tourists (and at least one reporter) visiting North Korea began accessing the web directly from their smartphones, through the country’s Koryolink 3G network. Associated Press journalist Jean H. Lee has been tweeting from Pyongyang since Monday, though she didn’t get around to detailing the service until yesterday. Her tweet, “Hello world from comms center in #Pyongyang,” is believed to be the first to come through the new wireless data service, which can be activated for the princely sum of €75 (about $100). From there, data rates range from €150 for 2GB to €400 for 10 gigs, according to a DailyNK report. (Those tariffs should come as no surprise to DPRK visitors, who often shell out thousands for week-long tours that include meager accommodations and constant monitoring.)

The Koryolink network, which was built in cooperation with Egypt’s Orascom Telecom, marks a radical shift in policy for North Korea, which also recently began to allow tourists to enter the country with their own cellphones — previously, visitors were required to hand over the devices upon landing in Pyongyang. With the exception of approved users (certain government officials, we presume), North Korean residents remain offline, however. For those authorized, access may be pricey, but considering that connectivity can provide peace of mind to travelers and their families at home, a data-enabled SIM seems a worthwhile acquisition for anyone visiting one of 3G’s famous final frontiers.

Scientists reliably measure a supermassive black hole’s spin for the first time

Out of all of the amazing wonders and phenomenon in space, one of the most amazing and perplexing is the black hole. A black hole has incredibly strong gravitational pull capturing everything from rock and gas to light. Nothing escapes a black hole.

black-hole1

Scientists have studied black holes for years in an attempt to understand how they are created and how they work. Astronomers have announced that they have made the first reliable measurement of a supermassive black hole’s spin. The black hole the scientists studied is at the center of a spiral galaxy called NGC 1365.

According to the scientists, this gigantic black hole is spinning at about 84% of the speed that Einstein’s general theory of relativity will allow. The discovery shows that some giant supermassive black hole’s are spinning very quickly. This discovery confirms studies in the past that had hypothesized black holes spun very quickly.

Those previous studies were unable to confirm the speedy rotation of the target black hole. NGC 1365 is 56 million light-years away from Earth. The galaxy is located in the constellation Fornax, and the black hole in its center is more massive than several million suns. This particular black hole is also known to spew huge amounts of energy as it gobbles up gas and other objects nearby. The scientists used the high-energy light emitted by iron atoms consumed by the black hole to trace the motion of the flat, rotating accretion disk that circles the black hole.

Sony NEX-7n’s EVF Rumored To Feature 3.8 Million Dot Resolution

Sony NEX 7ns EVF Rumored To Feature 3.8 Million Dot ResolutionYesterday we reported that according to the rumors, the Sony NEX-7n could be announced sometime in April. Some of its rumored specs included a new 24MP camera, different from the NEX-7, and supposedly a new EVF which is a vast improvement over the NEX-7. Now according to the folks at Sony Alpha Rumors, they have managed to get more details about said EVF. Based on what their source has told them, the EVF in the NEX-7n will feature a 3.8 million dot resolution, and that basically means that it will have 60% more resolution than the current NEX-7. Supposedly this new EVF will be “bright and sharp”. We can’t imagine how different this new EVF will look like, but if this is true we’re definitely looking forward to getting our hands on it. Since these specs cannot be confirmed, we suggest you take it with a grain of salt for now. In the meantime what do you guys think? How do you feel about EVFs, or do you prefer it the old school way?

Cricket’s iPhone 5 play stumbles amid half the predicted demand

Leap Wireless’ sales of the iPhone have significantly under-performed, despite expectations that a prepaid iPhone 5 would be in hot demand, with $100m-worth of unsold stock expected by June. Leap’s deal with Apple saw the iPhone 5 offered through Cricket Wireless at $500 with no ongoing commitment, but according to an 10-K SEC filing, the carrier predicts it will have only sold half of the expected units by the time the smartphone reaches its first birthday.

Leap signed a three year long purchase commitment with Apple back in May 2012, which came into effect when Cricket began selling phones the following month. That agreement basically means Leap must buy a certain, minimum amount of devices from Apple, even if it doesn’t necessarily sell that many.

“At our current purchase rate, we project that we will purchase approximately one-half of our first-year minimum purchase commitment through June 2013 … If Apple were to require us to meet the annual minimum commitment in each of the three years of the contract term, we estimate that we would be required to purchase approximately $100 million of additional iPhones in mid-2013 above our current purchase rate, approximately $150 million of additional iPhones in mid-2014 above our current purchase rate and approximately $200 million of additional iPhones in mid-2015 above our current purchase rate” Leap Wireless

Part of the problem, Leap suggests, is the limitations of its network coverage. Cricket service isn’t available to the same extent as that of AT&T and Verizon, which can mean potential customers either can’t buy the iPhone where they live, or choose another carrier because they may need to travel outside of Cricket’s network.

As the carrier points out, “if Apple introduces an AWS-compatible version of the iPhone in the future, we will be able to sell the device in additional markets covering approximately 40% of our covered POPs.” Nonetheless, Leap isn’t counting on that necessarily happening – or, indeed, Apple agreeing to renegotiate the purchase commitment – and so is considering other strategies.

They include more comprehensive device leasing or financing programs, which would spread the upfront cost of the iPhone 5 out over a more extended period, or even just changing the sticker price of the iPhone itself. The carrier also hopes to work with Apple to boost its promotional drive, to tackle the possibility that many people might not even consider Cricket in the first place.

Interestingly, while Leap’s COO says he is “not concerned about … meeting the Apple commitment,” attempting to reassure the market during a recent financial results call, he is also putting a big chunk of his faith in another device. “I would say there was a stronger device [than iPhone 5] in our lineup” Jerry Elliot told analysts last week, referring to Samsung’s Galaxy S III.
