PlayStation 4 controller prototype leaked with touchpad

Today a lovely new look at the PlayStation 4 from a controller perspective – a prototype of what very much appears to be the real deal for the upcoming next-gen console. This piece of hardware has been traced back to Destructoid where just as much questioning about its authenticity is being done as we’ll be doing here. Though there’s no way of knowing if this is a final release edition or if this is merely a temporary casing for what will be a much more slimmed-down iteration of the final PlayStation 4 controller, we do have some clues here as to what we’ll be seeing.

xlarge

First you’ll see the basic controls still in-tact. Complete with the triangle, circle, X, and square as well as directional pad, you’ve got the left and right, topside tappers and a couple of joysticks ready for action. Of course there’s a couple of items you might not have seen before included as well, starting with the touchpad. Several times now we’ve heard that this controller will be including a touchpad not unlike what’s included on the PSVita – the same one we reviewed early last year.

This device also has a front-facing speaker and a big blue light up on top. We must assume this is part of some magic wand-type situation or we’ll never be able to live with ourselves thinking there’s such a giant LED up top without purpose. Perhaps motion control of some sort. We can pretty safely assume that with this amount of bulk in the controller that we’ll have built-in rumbling as well.

Have a peek at the rest of the PlayStation 4 timeline below and stay tuned for more Sony action as we head to the main event next week. It’s there that we expect Sony to reveal something or other – or at least to have word of when the PlayStation 4 will be released some time in the future. Could be be so bold as to expect real devices to be there up close and personal? We shall see!

Samsung Announces Refrigerator That Can Make Soda

Samsung Announces Refrigerator That Can Make SodaWhen we walk over to our fridge, it’s most likely in order to retrieve some delicious treat as a number of our meals would be planned completely differently if we weren’t able to keep them cold. One treat I like to indulge in every so often is a nice ginger ale, which I can now make myself now that Samsung has introduced its refrigerator equipped with a SodaStream dispenser.

Samsung’s RF31FMESBSR is a 36-inch four-door refrigerator which has a number of features, but the most enticing has to be its SodaStream dispenser. SodaStream is an appliance that has been gaining in popularity over the years, and this marks the first time a refrigerator has decided to fuse with it. (more…)

US Cellular to cover 87% of its customers with LTE in 2013

US Cellular may not have the biggest 4G LTE network, but it’s working on expanding the service to more of its customers. The carrier announced today that they’ll be expanding their 4G LTE network in several states in the US, as well as introducing LTE to brand new states, including California, Nebraska, and Kansas.

IMG_1305-copy-580x435

States that currently have US Cellular’s 4G LTE service that will see an expansion include Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Currently, the carrier’s LTE coverage covers 61% of its customers in the US.

Some of the cities that will receive US Cellular’s 4G LTE coverage include Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska; Manhattan, Kansas; Eureka and Ukiah California. As far as what other cities are on the list to get the upgrade, US Cellular didn’t say, so cross your fingers and just hope that it’s your city that gets the faster service.

US Cellular currently offers 10 devices with LTE capabilities, including the Samsung Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note II, as well as several Motorola devices. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when US Cellular will start knocking out its list of cities to get LTE, but we’re guessing we should be seeing steady roll-outs all year long.

This week the folks at TomTom have made it clear that the TomTom Rider will not be fading into obscurity, re-releasing a new iteration of the device with the same name here in 2013 with a brand new set of specifications and features. This device is made to sit on and with your motorcycle and allow you to get guided in real time, find local hotspots, and share routes with fellow bikers wirelessly via Bluetooth. They’ll need a TomTom Rider as well, of course, so pick up a few!

There’s a new charging bike dock with this model that turns the device on or off with the ignition on the bike you’re riding, and the display you’re working with is improved as well. This newly enhanced 4.3-inch screen is touch-friendly and biker glove-friendly – so you wont have to de-glove each time you want to tap!

The lovely scene and mini-movie you’re seeing above should encourage you to pick one of these devices up, if only because it makes you feel so flowery and friendly inside. According to Managing Director of TomTom Consumer Corinne Vigreux, the TomTom team sought out feedback from motorbike communities that they then used to create this newest-gen device. They found that “the overwhelming majority of bikers use their motorcycle for recreational purposes”, this leading the TomTom team to include features that allow the biker to find and ride “the best scenic routes in the world.”

Apple Proposes Patent To End Blurry iPhone Photos

Apple Proposes Patent To End Blurry iPhone Photos

Folks who wander around the US Patent Office (USPTO) website have discovered a patent application from Apple that describes a technique used to avoid having blurry photos. Named “Image capturing device having continuous image capture”, the idea is to have the camera capture frames at all times, and when the user presses the shutter button, the camera has not only the frame that was intended for capture, but also many more before (and possibly) after the shutter button action. Some cameras already do this today. (more…)

PixelTone Photo Editing App Lets You Use Voice Commands: Photoshout

Digital photo editing is one of the most valuable – and fun! – skills to have these days. But not all of us can easily learn the right mix of tools, filters, tweaks and whatnot to get the result we want. If even the thought of using MS Paint causes your eyes to glaze over, you might be intrigued by PixelTone. It’s like Siri for Photoshop.

pixeltone ipad app by university of michigan and adobe

PixelTone is a prototype iPad app developed by folks from Adobe Research and the University of Michigan. Unlike Photoshop Touch – or any photo editing app for that matter – PixelTone was made to be operated using natural language commands and simple gesture controls. The user will still need to know certain terms like contrast, crop and saturation, but as you’ll see in the demo below even newbies like me can pull off a lot of tweaks on PixelTone that we may not be able to do on a normal photo editing program. You can even attach words to parts of the picture, such as identifying people or clothes.

There’s no word if the researchers will release a commercial version of PixelTone, but one thing’s for certain: they can make a mind-controlled Photoshop, but you can’t automate taste. Or tact. For more information on the projection, you can download a copy of the PixelTone research paper on Eytan Adar’s website.
