Evad3rs member Planetbeing talks iOS 7 jailbreaking

The iOS 6 jailbreak is officially out and it’s had plenty of time to get into the hands of eager jailbreakers, specially 7 million of them. Now that the Evad3rs dev team has had some time to relax, one of the members was available to answer questions on Reddit today. Planetbeing, the hacker also behind the first jailbreak ever, discussed his thoughts on jailbreaking iOS 7.

When asked if iOS 7 may possibly be harder or more easier to jailbreak than iOS 6, Planetbeing says that “it’s hard to say,” since he’s not quite sure what Apple will do, but he guesses that the next major version of iOS will be harder to jailbreak, and while the time it takes to jailbreak each major iOS version has kept rising, Planetbeing really isn’t sure how long it might take to get iOS 7 exploited.

He continues by saying that, when iOS 7 eventually comes out, the dev team will study it and see what they can do with it. He says that you “can’t really plan on” things beforehand, since it’s so difficult to know what to expect. Planetbeing says that it’s all a “specialized game with a steep learning curve.”

As far as what Planetbeing does when he’s not hacking into Apple devices, he actually works at a web analytics company for his day job, and as far as his free time, he says that “if jailbreaking is no longer possible,” he would most likely play all those Steam games he bought on sale that he never gets around to playing.

Apple Quietly Improves EarPods, Lightning Cable Accessories

Apple Quietly Improves EarPods, Lightning Cable Accessories

Apple is always looking to improve its products on a regular basis. Whether those improvements are ones that we would actually need can certainly be debated as one day they can offer improvements to its MacBook Pro with Retina Display line, then the next, offer new accessories we’re sure only a handful of you are interested in.

Unfortunately for you, today is the latter kind of update as Apple isn’t offering any groundbreaking changes today, but they’re changes nonetheless. (more…)

PowerSkin PoP’n Review: Apple certified iPhone 5 battery coolness

It’s high time you got some external battery solutions for that brand new iPhone 5, isn’t it? Why not have a peek at this fancy little monster from PoP’n, brand new to the market this week and ready for action with Apple-Certified Lightning connection for your current-gen Apple products. Of course it’s made specifically for the iPhone 5, so we’ll be having a peek at that first – but note that this battery pack comes in different iterations as well: microUSB being one of them.

In the future you’ll see this device with HTC-compatible microUSB connectors as well as Apple 30-pin connectors for iPhone and iPods and iPads before this current generation, but for now, it’s all about microUSB for everyone else and Lightning for the iPhone 5. With this device you’ll find an extremely light and smooth battery pack with a rubbery, flexible bottom tail that reaches down and back up to your iPhone.

The back of this pack is covered with suction cups so it can easily attach to your iPhone without effort, the whole thing ending up being short enough for you to be able to work with your back-facing camera with ease. This pack contains 2000mAh of battery power and has a set of 4 LED lights near the top above a button you can press to see how much juice you’ve got left for the day. With the iPhone 5 already giving me nearly a full-day’s juice each average weekday, this pack is more than enough to suffice for the rest.

You’ll be re-charging the pack with an included microUSB cord that you’ll connect to your computer’s USB port (or a wall converter if you’ve got one handy). The whole pack will cost you a cool $79.99 USD if you’re getting the Apple Lightning connector version or $69.99 for the microUSB edition, and they’re available in two colors for now (black and white) with more iterations coming in the near future. Red and Pink on the way – time for a belated Valentine’s Day gift!

Autodesk partners with Lego to create interactive 3D Mindstorm plans

If you think it’s hard putting the “Lego Discovery Fire Station” together, how about building and wiring a fully-functioning Mindstorm EV3 robot? To give you a leg up, the Danish toy outfit’s joining forces with Autodesk to put together 3D interactive building instructions for the latest generation of Mindstorm mechs. The effects and 3D software firm will use its Inventor Publisher software to create interactive plans that run on iPads, Android devices and web browsers for five different ‘bots. That way, you’ll be able to actually put on your builder’s hat and not just giggle enthusiastically at the final result.

Bump Is The Easy Way to Transfer Data Between Phones and Computers

Bump has announced an update to their popular content sharing app, which will allow users to share content between their smartphones and computers. Users can literally “Bump” videos, pictures, contacts and other files from their phones to their computers. The computer’s browser is pointed to a special URL and the files are sent via the app on the phone. The best part, there is no lengthy setup.  The app only needs to be downloaded on the phone. At present, file transfer size is restricted to 30 MB. (more…)

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Accidentally Revealed In Promotional Ad

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Accidentally Revealed In Promotional Ad

We know Samsung is working on an 8-inch tablet in the Galaxy Note family which we have a feeling will be making its debut at MWC later this month. Three variants are expected when Samsung finally unveils the device and we’ve seen photos of the device leaked on the Internet, but the company may have just ruined its own reveal by possibly leaking the Galaxy Note 8.0 in a promotional image.

The origins of the possible leak came from yesterday’s announcement of making a red Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE available just in time for Valentine’s Day. According to the eagle-eyed readers of SammyHub, the small tablet that is hanging above the chef’s head may just be the Galaxy Note 8.

The tablet in question certainly isn’t large enough to be considered a Galaxy Note 10.1. The tablet also matches with the leaked images that were previously leaked. If that isn’t a shot of the Galaxy Note 8, then Samsung may have trolled the Internet by throwing up a completely fictional tablet in their promotional images. Chances are the tablet in question is indeed the Galaxy Note 8, which we still don’t know why exactly Samsung decided to place it in their ad for the red Galaxy Note 10.1 to begin with.

Build the Best PC For Your Buck

We all know that, generally speaking, buying the newest top-end part gets you the most performance. But in most cases, the premium you pay for that part covers a whole lot of other stuff as well that has no bearing on frame rates or video encoding times. We’re talking about the added cost of covering research and development, product marketing, lower production yields, etc. That high price also includes a vanity tax, if you will-the extra charge incurred by folks who simply want to have the latest hardware, hot off the fab, for bragging rights. Steam for Linux available now

Today Valve has announced that the Steam client for Linux is now available. The app is now available for download through the Ubuntu Software Center, and of course, as with all major announcements on Steam, the gaming service is holding a week-long sale on 50 Linux games for up to 75% off of their normal price.

Screen Shot 2013-02-14 at 2.45.45 PM

The sale is actually pretty decent, with a number of popular titles getting huge discounts. The games are mostly indie titles, but there’s a number of games that are well worth the cost. For instance, Counter-Strike: Source is only $5, while Trine 2 is only $3.74. You can also get World of Goo for $2.49, and Amnesia: The Dark Descent (a fantastic horror game) for only $5.

The best part is, while all these game are for Linux, they’re also compatible for Windows and Mac, so if you don’t use Linux, you can still take advantage of the sale. Half-Life is $5, and a couple of Penumbra games are only a couple of bucks each. There’s 50 games in total, all of which are at least compatible with Windows, with just a few missing Mac support.

Valve first discussed Steam for Linux last year in April, and opened up the beta to the public back in December. The client supports Valve’s new Big Picture mode, where you can play games and navigate through the client on your big-screen living room television. Plus, Steam supports cross-platform play, so you can start a game on one OS, and finish it later on another.
