HAAC Locked Down After Student Abducted From Class

Police locked down Harrisburg Area Community College’s campus after reports that a student was abducted from her classroom by her boyfriend, according to CBS 21.

Administrators issued a campus safety alert at 7:16 Wednesday night on the Harrisburg campus, reading simply, “HACC Harrisburg Campus closed – domestic dispute. Harrisburg PD searching for individuals. Remain in classroom. If not in classroom, exit the campus.”

Campus safety alerts are most often issued when there is an immediate threat to individuals on campus. Since the alleged abductor remained on campus for a short time after the incident, police said, the lockdown wasn’t lifted until just before 8 p.m. when they believed the suspect had left the scene.

With 20% Of Reservations Filled, Mailbox Goes Down So You Can Enjoy Your Valentine’s Day

Freedom-sign-500x250

Last week’s hot app, Mailbox, is currently down. In very RIM-esque fashion, the startup’s servers are not forwarding mail, resulting in a very quiet Valentine’s Day. I’m pretty stoked about it. I think this should be a feature.

According to Mailbox’s twitter page, the company is busy fixing the problem. They quickly issued a couple of official responses but one is not very helpful. This one details the problems, stating that they are seeing intermittent issues with our servers syncing mail and new mail created will not be lost.

Mailbox launched with much fanfare last week. I love it. It’s the perfect cross between Mail and Gmail. However, today’s outage is what I fear the most.

The app’s novel features work because email is routed through Mailbox’s servers. Thus, if and when these servers crash (like right now), the mail is no longer forwarded to the app.

Since the app generated so much interest before it launched, the company instituted a reservation system, purposely limiting the amount of users (and strain) on its servers. Mailbox told us in a statement this afternoon that they received over 900,000 reservation requests and have so far managed to fill 20 percent. This is the first outage since the launch last week.

But think about it. Today is Valentine’s Day. It’s a day you’re supposed to enjoy with your sweetheart. I’m about to head off to my son’s kindergarten Valentine’s Day party. I won’t be distracted now. I’ll be able to participate like a good dad. Thanks, Mailbox! I love you even more right now.

In other news Mailbox’s reservation line is also paused.

‘Overcoming Adversities As A Gay Teen’ Project Documents 10 Coming Out Stories

A California-based teen sent HuffPost Gay Voices his senior project, which tells the story of 10 gay men from the ages of 15 to 82.

Devon Yaffe named his project “Overcoming Adversities as a Gay Teen: One Generation A Time,” and tells us in an email: “Going into my senior year of high school, I was given the task of creating a senior project, which was a research project based on a topic of interest.”

He adds, “As a newly active member of this ever-growing community, I reached out to the gay community in order to hear the stories of gay youth … I hope that gay youth all over can see what I have created and be inspired to add their voice to the community. I feel I have created one of the best kinds of documentaries there is: the true life testimony of those who have grown up gay in a heterosexual world.”

Motown Love Songs: Celebrate Valentine’s Day With Classic Tracks From Detroit Record Label

Those Motown crooners still really have a hold on us.

From a little house on Detroit’s Grand Boulevard, Berry Gordy Jr. made Motown Records one of the most influential record labels of all time. His influence helped propel racial integration in the 1960s and pioneered the “Motown Sound” — soul music with high-powered pop beats and classical accoutrements.

Most importantly, he found and nurtured stars like Stevie Wonder, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson … the list goes on and on. And year after year, until Motown Records decamped for Los Angeles in 1972, “Hitsville U.S.A,” as it was called,” churned out over 100 Top 100 hits.
