iOS and Android combine for 91% of smartphone market share

It’s certainly no surprise that Android and iOS are gobbling up most of the smartphone market share nowadays, with a few stragglers like BlackBerry and Windows Phone. Of course, if you needed proof, IDC has it. The research firm reported that iOS and Android have a combined 91% market share when it comes to smartphone operating systems.

As far as how each operating system is doing, IDC’s report shows that Android’s Q4 2012 market share was 70.1%, while iOS took hold of 21%. BlackBerry, Windows Phone, Linux, and “Others” accounted for the remaining 8.9%, with BlackBerry coming in third at a measly 3.2% for the quarter. However, perhaps one of the most interesting facets from the statistics are the changes from this time last year.

During Q4 2011, Android had 52.9% of the market share, with Apple at 23%, so Android saw a big jump while Apple had a slight loss. However, BlackBerry dipped big time, going from 8.1% last year to 3.2% this year. Of course, that’s not a huge jump, but when you only own a slight portion of market share, each loss is crucial.

In total, smartphone shipments topped out at 227.8 million during the fourth quarter, which is a substantial jump from last year’s 160.8 million during Q4 2011. Of course, that’s not too surprising, given that smartphones are taking over. Samsung remained a big player this time around as well, accounting for 42% of all Android smartphones for the quarter.

Mario Golf: World Tour Swings For A Summer Release On Nintendo 3DS

Fans of golf games are either hardcore players that only play titles that offer realism like the Tiger Woods series or completely off-the-wall like the Hot Shots series. Nintendo’s Mario Golf series could be considered a golf game similar to the latter and its latest version will be coming to the Nintendo 3DS this summer.

Mario Golf: World Tour will be developed by famed series developer Camelot and will deliver a mix of traditional golf courses as well as courses inspired by the Mario series, which means we can expect there to be Bullet Bills, lava pits and probably a penguin or two in some of the courses.

The golf roster for Mario Golf: World Tour will include Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Bowser and Donkey Kong. It’s a shame no females from the Mario series have made it into the game at this point as we’re sure many female Mario Golf fans enjoy playing as Princess Peach or Daisy every so often.

Informal OUYA game count: 481 and growing

OUYA game store

You can sometimes gauge a game console’s short-term success based on its launch lineup; many of us know the pain of having to choose the least terrible game of a small bunch while we’re waiting for a better selection. While we can’t vouch for how the OUYA will fare for quality, Eddie at OUYA Forum has done the legwork to prove that there won’t be any problems with the Android console’s quantity. He’s checked with both OUYA and developers to confirm that there are at least 481 games headed to the fledgling system, as of this writing. The clear majority of these are smaller indie titles that won’t dampen Sony’s enthusiasm for next week, but that’s not necessarily a problem — the abundance mostly hints that there could be a few gems for early adopters, even if there’s a lot of fluff.

Nixon Blaster Bluetooth Speaker Will Outlast The Last of Your Partygoers

There are plenty of Bluetooth speakers, but finding one that lasts more than 10 hours is a rarity. Nixon’s first Bluetooth speaker is supposed to have 18 hours of autonomy on a single charge. Now that’s long, and it will keep the music playing late into the night.

Nixon’s Blaster Bluetooth speaker touts an impressive battery life, especially when you compare it to speakers like the Jawbone Jambox, which lasts between 8 to 10 hours, and that’s long for these kinds of devices. Most of the specs haven’t yet been announced, but the Blaster is supposed to be weather-resistant as well.

The Blaster goes on sale this May, and prices haven’t yet been announced. I’m sure people are excited about having extra battery life and not always having to charge their speakers up. Hopefully the speaker will be competitively priced. Spending any more than $150(USD) for a Bluetooth speaker is a bit of a non-starter for me.
