UK investigating passive radar system to detect aircraft location, free up 5G spectrum

Ready for a new radar system? The UK could be, if a new study is deemed a success. Thales, a French aerospace company which manufactures traditional radar systems, has received funding from the UK’s Technology Strategy Board to study the feasibility of using TV signals to locate planes and choppers through a technology called “passive radar.” According to the BBC, the system would monitor the timing of TV signals reflected from aircraft, which would enable equipment to display an exact location, while measuring the Doppler effect would provide speed and direction information.

Though it’s not based on GPS, the new system would reportedly be more accurate and efficient than what’s in use today, while also serving to free up spectrum that could be used for an upcoming 5G network. Unconvinced frequent fliers need not worry, however — the country’s existing radar infrastructure would remain intact throughout the test period, and air traffic control officials won’t be switching to the new system unless it’s sanctioned, which, considering the significance of such a move, could take some time.

Mozilla Rolls Out Firefox For Windows 8

Mozilla Rolls Out Firefox For Windows 8Mozilla is said to have introduced the most recent nightly build of Firefox for Windows, and when done on a computer that is powered by Windows 8, you will find that you can then launch the spanking new “Metro” style Firefox app from the Windows Start Screen itself. Of course, bear in mind that you are not supposed to download Firefox Metro from the store itself, but the nightly build instead. Not all the steps are dummy proof though, as to gain access to Firefox Metro, you have your work cut out for you. First, you will need to set Firefox as your default web browser, followed by tapping the “Nightly” icon to roll out the classic Firefox version, or if you prefer, choose the “Nightly” icon from the Start Screen itself – it works either way.

Initial impressions of the new Metro-style app seem to indicate that it has been heavily inspired by the Firefox mobile browser on the Android platform, featuring a generous search/address bar that is located at the top of the screen, in addition to a plus icon to the right which allows you to fire up a new browser tab.

Moneual Smart Care System Helps Deaf Identify Sounds

While there’s plenty of hype going on about smartwatches these days, most of the watches out there solve fairly superfluous problems – like seeing that you have a phone call because you’re too lazy to get the phone out of your pocket. On the other hand, this smartwatch could really help deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

moneaul smart care system smartwatch for deaf

The Android 4-powered Moneaual Smart Care System (SCS1000) can be used to alert people with hearing difficulties to emergency situations by relaying information to the LCD screen of the watch, as well as an accompanying vibration alert.

The device can detect specific sounds and alert users to them on the watch display. In indoor mode, the watch is smart enough to identify everything from the sound of a doorbell ringing, to a smoke alarm beeping, to a crying baby to a phone ringing or boiling water. In outdoor mode, it can detect car horns and other loud noises to protect wearers from dangerous situations. The watch also offers an emergency mode which can call 911 and request help on your behalf.

There’s no word yet on pricing or a release date for the Moneaual Smart Care System, but it could definitely be a great gadget for those with partial or total hearing loss when it’s ultimately released.

It’s Less Expensive to Fly to the US and Buy Adobe CS6 Than to Buy It in Australia

Adobe may be trying its best to skirt the issue of crazy high prices in Australia, but it’s going to be hard as long as news outlets keep pointing out that it is actually cheaper to fly to the US and pick up a copy of Adobe CS6 than it is to stay in Australia and buy it there. More »

Archos unveils new Platinum line of tablets with high-res display and quad-core CPU

Archos may not be a main competitor in the tablet marketplace, but they’re doing whatever they can to become more relevant. Case in point: the company just outed three new tablets, all of which come with Retina-quality, high-resolution IPS displays and quad-core processors. The tablets come in 8-inch, 9.7-inch, and 11.6-inch flavors.

Archos is calling these tablets the Platinum line, and the company says that they “are amongst the first Android tablets to offer a super high resolution IPS screen combined with the performance of a Quad-Core CPU.” The tablets come with a 1.2 GHz quad-core chip, 2GB of RAM, front and rear cameras, microSD card slot, HDMI-out, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to run the show.

However, not all three of these tablets quite match the pixel density of the full-size iPad. The 8-inch Platinum rocks a 1024×768 resolution, the 11.6-inch model has a 1920×1080 resolution, and the 9.7-inch variant has 2048×1536 resolution, which is right on par with the iPad’s own Retina display — no more, no less.

Of course, this isn’t the first high-resolution tablet that Archos has put together. Back in December, the company outed the 97 Titanium HD, which comes with a 9.7-inch screen with a 2048×1536 resolution. However, that model only had a measly dual-core on the inside, while the new Platinum slates are rocking quad-core chips.

The Archos 80 Platinum will begin shipping later this month for $199, while the 97 Platinum HD will be available around the same time for $299. The larger 116 Platinum will begin shipping in April at a cost $349. These tablets are definitely less expensive than competing tablets, so it’ll be interesting to see how they hold up against the competition.

Archos To Enter Android Smartphone Market?

Archos To Enter Android Smartphone Market?Archos of France has rolled out its fair share of Android-powered tablets and portable media players in the past, with the Archos Platinum tablet range being the most recent one – but smartphones? Well, word on the street has it that they are not too far away from Android smartphones, where French blogger Pierre Lecourt cites sources of his that Archos will be rolling out a trio of different smartphones in due time, where they will come in 3.5-inch, 4.8-inch, and 5.2-inch displays.

The Archos Carbon 35 is touted to be the smallest model with a modest 480 x 320 pixel display, a single core processor and a paltry 512MB RAM as well as an equal amount of storage. Needless to say, this is clearly a budget handset that ought to retail for approximately 90 Euros. As for the Archos 48 Platinum, this higher end handset sports a 4.8-inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, a quad-core 1.7GHz Mediatek MT6589 ARM Cortex-A7 processor and a 249 Euro price tag. Last but not least, the Archos 52 Titanium might feature the most generous display at 4.8-inches, but it has a relatively low pixel count at 800 x 480 pixels, alongside a dual-core 1.2GHz processor.

Europe Spends 3.5M Euros To Fight Network Latency

Europe Spends 3.5M Euros To Fight Network Latency

When it comes to networking, a lot of people focus on the bandwidth side of the issue, but latency is sometime a much bigger problem (especially on wireless networks). Network latency is that the that it takes an information packet to go from one computer to the next. For example, a typical web page which is hosted in your town can be accessed in 54ms. The same page from the same server can have a latency of 800ms if accessed from the other side of the globe. Latency can have different forms, and is not only a matter of distances every network has some level of latency, even your home network. (more…)

Scosche Adds To Your iPhone 5 And iPad Charging Options With New Lightning Line

strikeLINE PRO

Once upon a time I thought I would be very short of charging solutions for my iPhone 5 thanks to the switch to Lightning. Now, for various reasons, I have an abundance of Lightning cables. One might even say an overabundance. But they do lack variety, and that’s what a new line of charging accessories from Scosche aims to address.

The new Scosche line offers both 5W and 12W dedicated car and wall chargers, an industry first for Lightning cables. The car chargers in particular are a nice addition to the line, since they’re designed to be low-profile with curled cables to keep them out-of-the-way when not in use, which has an advantage in a car versus a combination standard-issue Lightning cable combined with a car outlet adapter.

Finally, a retractable model fills out the new line, hiding a 3 foot charge and sync cable that remains coiled in a small package when not in use. I know a lot of gadget aficionados who will appreciate a Lightning version of this design, which has propagated like an unchecked bunny population in ideal mating circumstances over the past few years.

The Scosche cables range in price from $24.99 to $34.99, and are available from Scosche’s website and also from AT&T, Wal-Mart, Staples, Fry’s and other retailers soon. They’re MFI-certified, too, which means Apple has given sign-off on their designs, unlike a lot of the knock-off chargers and cables coming from Chinese accessory manufacturers. I may already have an overabundance of cables, but let’s be honest, you can always have more.

Archos Platinum Range Introduced

Archos Platinum Range IntroducedArchos has jumped aboard the tablet bandwagon with their latest release, the Platinum tablet range that prides itself in being one of the first few Android-powered tablets in the market that delivers a super high resolution IPS display alongside a quad-core processor, alongside Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice. The three tablets will come in 8-inch, 9.7-inch and 11.6-inch configurations, where all of them deliver true vivid colors, sharper text and amazingly fast performance.

Shared features in the Platinum range include a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, an 8-core GPU with 1080p video decoding capability, 2GB RAM, full access to the 700,000 applications on Google Play, Archos Media Center applications, two cameras (one in front and another at the back), mini-HDMI and a microSD memory card slot. The Archos 80 Platinum will arrive this month for $199 a pop, while the Archos 97 Platinum HD will be more expensive at $299, offering a stunning 2048×1536 resolution IPS screen that will surely rival the Retina display iPad, and the $349 Archos 116 Platinum boasting of a 1920×1080 resolution IPS display.
