Red sues Sony over patents, wants disputed F-series cameras ‘destroyed’

Red sues Sony over patents, wants offending Fseries cameras 'destroyed'

We reported that Sony was going “Red hunting” with it’s new F-series pro camcorders, but it looks like Red has flipped that scenario. It’s suing Sony for allegedly violating two of its patents — asking for an injunction to stop sales plus an award for damages, and even that that the F5, F55 and F65 models in question be “delivered up and destroyed.” The Hobbit camera-maker claims the video cams have “resulted in lost sales, reduced the business and profit of Red, and greatly injured the general reputation of Red.” The patents involve Red’s implementation of RAW video, but no details were given as to how it thinks those processes were infringed. Anyway, you can now add high-end video cameras to the growing playbill of patent follies.

[Thanks, Andrea!]

Logitech unveils new Webcam C930e aimed at business users

Logitech offers all sorts of products that are geared more towards business users than consumers. One of the most common products the company makes specifically for business users are certain types of webcams. Logitech has unveiled a new webcam for business users today called the Logitech Webcam C930e.

The camera is designed specifically for desktop video and has features that promise to make it easy to use and to provide high-quality video. The webcam has a 90-degree field of view and supports H.264 SVC and UVC 1.5 video encoding standards. The camera also supports high-definition digital pan-tilt-zoom capability.

The webcam offers full HD resolution allowing enterprise-grade video collaboration with large groups thanks to its wide viewing angle. The camera has a Carl Zeiss-certified glass lens that is specifically engineered to avoid fisheye distortion. The camera is optimized for Microsoft Lync and is compatible with both Cisco and Skype as well as most unified communications and video conferencing applications.

The camera’s integrated digital pan-tilt-zoom feature is able to maintain high definition images at up to four times magnification. Logitech says the integrated support for H.264 SVC and UVC 1.5 video encoding frees up PC hardware bandwidth by processing video directly within the camera. The camera will also adjust performance for maximum video quality when bandwidth fluctuates. The camera will be available in May for $109.99.

EnGenius unveils new 900 MHz FreeStyl 2 extreme range cordless phone

It has been years since I had a home phone landline. I do have some not so fond memories of cordless phones that wouldn’t work upstairs and would get fuzzy if you walked around the corner from the base station. Many business users and a lot of consumers still have landmines in their home making cordless phones still very common. A company called EnGenius has a new cordless phone system that promises incredible range.

The cordless phone system is called the FreeStyl 2 Extreme-Range Cordless Phone. It looks like any other cordless phone on the outside, but inside the system has technology allowing for reliable telephone and intercom communications indoors in spaces up to 25,000 ft.². The company says that the system has enough range to cover six different floors.

If used outdoors, the phone system will span 10 acres. The phone system also supports up to nine handsets and can operate as a stand-alone system or as a long-range cordless analog extension to an existing PBX phone system. That means the system will be easy to integrate into your typical enterprise communications system.

Each handset has its own speaker and integrated two-way intercom and supports simultaneous broadcast to multiple handsets from any handset. The phone system has a one-year warranty and is available for $259.99. Add-on handsets are available to purchase as well.

In Japan, retailers are asking their customers: “Why don’t you be like chocolate for your loved one this year?”
Masaki Matsushima’s perfume “mat;chocolat” makes you smell like dark chocolate with a hint of fresh fruit flavor, blackcurrant and rose.
It’s not a sickly sweet perfume, it is more of a bitter dark chocolate smell. So why not be dark, mysterious and delicious this Valentine’s day?

Elon Musk produces Model S data logs to disprove New York Times’ Tesla review

Elon Musk produces Model S data logs, disputes New York Times Tesla review

We liked Tesla’s Model S, but some of the other outlets didn’t feel the same way. The New York Times‘ John Broder, for one, described being stranded 25 miles away from the nearest supercharger station. However, after Tesla’s litigious run-in with Top Gear, the company keeps detailed vehicle data logs to ensure it gets a fair deal in reviews. Now, Tesla (and SpaceX) CEO Elon Musk has posted the data that, he says, proves Broder wasn’t being fair.

Musk accuses Broder of pulling the plug on a recharge with just 32 miles range in the tank, despite planning a route of 61 miles “in obvious violation of common sense.” He also says the reviewer drove past a public charge station, despite repeated warnings that it was running low, drove the car around at 81mph and “deliberately stopped charging” after shorter and shorter times. Musk finishes by saying that the company was wrong to offer Broder access to the vehicle, as it was “unaware of his outright disdain for electric cars” and asks the New York Times to investigate the review. We suspect this one’s going to run-and-run, but we’d better warn the NYT that their opponent does have access to rockets.
