Microsoft Surface Pro Teardown

Microsoft Surface Pro TeardownYou just got to love the folks over at iFixit as they definitely have done a pretty bang up job all this while in terms of taking a particular device apart, bit by bit. Or at least, they do try their level best to, resulting in interesting statistics and ratings such as a “repairability” score. Well, their latest “victim” to be wheeled onto their workbench would be the Microsoft Surface Pro, we are sad to bring Microsoft fanboys word that their beloved Surface Pro has a rating of 1/10 in repairability. Hmmm, this does not sound too good for folks who love to roll up their sleeves and get down and dirty with things, right?

Do take into consideration that teardowns offer one the chance to check out the insides of a device, and should never be taken as seriously as official disassembly instructions. All that you do to tear down your Surface Pro would most probably void the warranty, so unless you have the curiosity level that can kill a cat, seeing it done safely from a distance ought to do the trick for most.

Wikipedia app to gain watchlist feature, make it easier to monitor entries

Wikipedia relies on users to hold other users accountable, monitoring content for inaccuracies or problems and updating it as necessary. One such way to do this is watchlists, which users can use to keep an eye on their favorite articles, such as their area of expertise or hobby. This feature has been lacking for mobile users, but that ends with an update Wikimedia is rolling out this week.

Mobile_Wikipedia_watchlist

With this new feature, users will be able to view a watchlist of their favorite articles via the Wikipedia app, something Wikimedia Foundation has stated it hopes will encourage more people to get involved. Users will need a Wikipedia account, which is free to create. From there, users can then log in to the account via the mobile app.

Users can star their preferred pages, and once starred, those pages will be shown in a list with the option for a “modified” view that shows changes and modifications that have been made. The foundation’s web team plans to roll out more features for this in the future, with this being just the beginning of what it has planned.

The next step, says Wikimedia, is implementing features that allow anyone to add images and make “small edits” to articles, as well as other unspecified features. Those who want to provide feedback on the change, or who want to stay updated on the other changes the foundation will be rolling out are encouraged to join the organization’s mailing list.

Satechi Multifunction Mini Router Extends Your Wi-Fi Range

Satechi Multifunction Mini Router Extends Your Wi Fi RangeSome of us do happen to live in a “black hole” when it comes to wireless signals – certain corners of the home just seem to be unable to receive any Wi-Fi signal of any kind, and when you take a look at your smartphone’s LTE signal, it drops to zero bars suddenly when entering the “zone”. Well, good thing there are devices out there to help you out in such a predicament, and Satechi’s Multifunction Mini Router is one of them, helping extend your Wi-Fi range whether you are at home or on the go.

The Satechi Multifunction Mini Router would make for the ideal traveling companion, being tiny enough to cram into any luggage, purse or briefcase, while offering users the convenience of converting a direct internet connection in conference rooms or hotel rooms to a private connection, delivering added security and mobility along the way. This plug and play router will also help extend the range of an existing Wi-Fi connection by another 100 feet – now is that cool or what? Theoretically, it has a maximum wireless speed of up to 300 Mbps via a 2.4GHz wireless band, but expect real world performance to be removed from such lofty heights.

If you are interested, the Satechi Multifunction Mini Router will retail for $39.99 a pop.

Rdio For iOS Updated

Rdio For iOS UpdatedEarlier this morning, we talked about how Slacker revamped their service to offer a more competitive service, and here we are with word that a possible Slacker rival, Rdio, has just introduced an update to the iOS version of the app. Well, before we proceed any further, here is a little bit of history about Rdio – it started off as a streaming music service from the co-creator of Skype, and we are glad to hear that Rdio has rolled out what they deem to be the *first* in a series of updates to its iOS app.

iOS users of Rdio should be pleased with the refreshed look and design which create an easier navigation experience overall, and there will obviously be new features thrown into the mix that include Long Press, making it a whole lot simpler to interact with the music, where all you need to do is just hold your finger down on any piece of music and you can share, sync, add to playlist or Collection, or play later.

Badges are now located on the lower right of any album art, and there will be new badges to indicate which music you have added to your Collection (these are green in color) or synced to your mobile device (orange in color). There will be other updates and features introduced in the year ahead by the Rdio developer team, so stay tuned!

Google countersues BT over alleged IP networking patent violations

Google countersues BT over alleged conferencing, quality patent violations

Google isn’t letting BT’s Android patent lawsuit go unanswered, even if it’s taking its sweet time. Over a year after BT struck first, Google has filed a countersuit against BT that claims the provider is infringing four patents relating to IP-based conferencing and quality of service delivery. The search firm makes clear that its lawsuit is leverage for a possible truce: it’s using the action as a “last resort” to fend off both BT and the patent holding companies that BT uses as proxies, according to a Google spokesperson. BT hasn’t had a chance to respond — or to be formally served, as of this writing — but we can’t imagine that a company which once sued over hyperlinks will simply agree to a stalemate.

Star Wars Episode V :The Empire Strikes Back Pinball Table

Star Wars Episode V :The Empire Strikes Back Pinball TableIt sure as heck looks to us as though there is plenty of cash left to be milked from the Star Wars franchise, so why not roll out a pinball table with Star Wars Episode V :The Empire Strikes Back as the main theme? This pinball table has been inspired by the events of the beloved film, where all the exciting action will take place on the main deck of the Executor Star Destroyer, boasting of iconic scenes which play in the dot matrix display whenever you activate missions during gameplay.

You will obviously be on the Light Side of the Force, joining Luke Skywalker in his quest to repel the advances of Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire. There will be a bunch of fully functional 3D objects such as an AT-AT walker (with a circling Snow Speeder to boot), a TIE Fighter, the Ion Cannon and as any Star Wars product worth its salt would carry, both lightsabers of Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.

Star Wars Pinball will arrive as a DLC for Zen Pinball 2 on PlayStation 3 and PS Vita later in February, coming across as Cross-Buy entitled content.

Alleged HTC G2 Screenshot Depicts Sense 5.0

Alleged HTC G2 Screenshot Depicts Sense 5.0The HTC G2 is rumored to be an entry-level handset that lies on the other end of the spectrum compared to the HTC One/M7, and what you see here on the right is rumored to be a HTC G2 screenshot that depicts what is a possible image of HTC Sense 5.0 running on top of the stock Android operating system. Now, we have heard good as well as bad things about HTC Sense before, and hopefully in the next iteration of this user interface overlay, the good will far outweigh the bad.

Bear in mind that nothing has been confirmed yet, and there is also the possibility that the HTC G2 might not get Sense 5.0 and what we’re looking at here could be a simpler version of Sense in a different form. After all, the HTC G2 has been rumored to run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but the HTC Sense 5.0 is said to require Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at the bare minimum. Well, hopefully in due time, all confusion can be cleared up!

State Of The City Tweets: Detroit Sounds Off About Mayor Dave Bing During 2013 Speech

When Detroit Mayor Dave Bing delivered his State of the City address Wednesday night, his self-congratulatory lines were greeted with tepid applause. His jokes, including one off-script asie directed at Oakland County Executive L Brooks Patterson, even drew out some light laughter from the crowd.

But the response was a lot less congenial — and way funnier — on Twitter.

Those following along with the speech, whether watching at home or in person at the Detroit School of Arts (we salute you, dexterous smart phone Tweeters) shared commentary and quips, as well as heartfelt frustration with the real state of the city.
