Valentines cards gain video screens in Printing in Motion/Spreengs joint effort

This week the folks at Printing in Motion and their sister-company Spreengs are letting the world know that you may be seeing a very thin video screen in your Valentine’s Day card thanks to them. In addition to adding very small screens to greetings cards, Printing in Motion works with groups like Mercedes to add displays to brochures for high-powered vehicles. Spreegs concentrates on the consumer end of the spectrum, making it their mission to create the greatest greeting cards on earth – all through a simple USB interface!

Founder and CEO/Chairman Anthony Kory spoke this week about the two services saying “we are all used to looking at videos, marketing information and more on a computer screen. It works, but we have lost the satisfying feeling of holding something in your hand.” He continued, noting “we wanted to bring back that satisfaction by using technology in a very personal way.” According to Kory, the reaction most often shown by users that open a card or brochure with their video technology inside is a mix of surprise and wonderment. They often exclaim that they didn’t know such technology existed in the first place!

Above you’ll see a presentation video made by PIM to show the options available with their service – high quality video and sound onboard. It’s also clear that PIM is able to work with interactive buttons and implement their display solution on most any product – even inside a gift box! Below you’ll find Spreengs, the sister-company of PIM, in business to offer up traditional greeting cards and invitations with this innovative thin screen solution.

Spreengs are “the first customizable video cards ever”, so say the creators of this solution for your next-level invite or greeting. You’ve only to import video into your computer from your camera to your computer then transfer the video to the card you buy from Spreengs. This card can be re-charged and changed as many times as you want. You’ll be getting a simpler card than you’d be able to get if you were a massive company working with PIM, but there it is – a lovely simple solution that’s both easy and rather nice to work with!

This next-generation video solution will be shown at CeBIT here in 2013, and we’ll be there too! Stay tuned for the March 5th through 9th set of CeBIT events to see the whole trade show straight from SlashGear in our lovely CeBit 2013 tag portal!

Lightsaber Toilet Plunger and Millennium Falcon Toilet Seat: May the Flush Be with You

This belonged to your father. He wanted you to have it. It is a plumbing tool from a more civilized age. And here, have this Millenium Falcon Toilet seat too.
lightsaber plunger
This is the best toilet plunger ever and all it takes is replacing the wooden rod from your plunger with a lightsaber. The falcon toilet seat is obviously Photoshopped, but it is still a good idea. Just don’t get into lightsaber fights with your plumber friends. That could be disgusting. That saber has been in the toilet for God’s sake. Then again, it might be a good deterrent for your opponent, and they might just run off.

I think we need a whole line of Star Wars bathroom accessories like these. Maybe an Admiral Ackbar toilet seat that says, “It’s a crap!” Oh, we already have that.

KRUPS Barista EA9000 Fully Automated Cappuccino Machine

KRUPS Barista EA9000 Fully Automated Cappuccino MachineIt’s the morning on the west coast, and this announcement came right on time. None of us here at Ubergizmo like to grind the coffee, which can be hazardous for geeky fingers controlled by a 65% operational brain in the (late) morning. Of course, the high-tech solution to that may be a one-touch coffee machine such as this KRUPS Barista EA9000 that comes with a large touch screen color display. It can handle Black (ristretto, espresso, or coffee) or Specialty, milk-based (cappuccinos, café lattes, macchiato) coffee drinks and up to 8 users can save their personal preferences (for quantity, strength, and temperature).

Some of us are coffee enthusiast, and although we like the high-tech aspect of this particular machine, we would also warn that when it comes to reliability, simpler is better. Without having tested this in the field, it’s hard to tell, but with a price tag of $2499.99, reading a few reviews may be worth your time.

The personalization is probably what sets it apart from regular models. Reliability apart, we also advice looking at how often one has to fill the water tank. That’s particularly valid if the machine is not place near a water source. Such devices rinse often, so a lot of the water is used for cleaning as well. What do you think? Would you get a Macbook Pro with Retina Display, a 65″ TV or… a coffee machine?

Now you too can watch Valve’s Gabe Newell and Bad Robots’ J.J. Abrams talk about storytelling

For some reason or another, Valve head Gabe Newell and Bad Robot head J.J. Abrams‘ DICE 2013 keynote wasn’t available via livestream or on Variety‘s YouTube channel last week. We’re guessing it’s because they’re both such nice gents that they wanted to give everyone else some time in the spotlight first. Good show! That politeness period, however, is now over, as the 20-minute talk on storytelling — which features examples from both Newell’s and Abrams’ work, as well as their influences — went up today on YouTube. We’ve dropped it below the break for all to see. If you’re anxious to get to the part where the two discuss plans to work together on movie and video game projects going forward, we’d suggest skipping to the last five minutes. Or you could read our post about it right here, should the other option be currently implausible from the cubicle you’re in.

Jawbone MyTalk Experiences Limited Hack

Jawbone MyTalk Experiences Limited Hack

Jawbone has announced that a small number of accounts had been compromised by cyber-attacks. The company did not mention how many, but did use the word “limited” to describe the scope of the attack. In any case, some user data (email, password, address) may have been stolen,  but Jawbone doesn’t think that more than that was accessed. Note that the password information that was accessed was encrypted, and if Jawbone used a different encryption key for each account, it should be hard (or at least very long) for hackers to do anything at scale with them. Tempo for iPhone cranks your calendar up to 11

We can all be pretty busy at times, and with so many appointments on your calendar, you might have a hard time keeping up with them as far as the details go. However, a new app aims to help you out with that by giving your calendar a slight boost. Tempo is sort of like a personal assistant, but it’s a lot different than Siri.

Screen Shot 2013-02-13 at 12.27.42 PM

The new app will allow you to do a number of things, such as look up relevant emails and documents before a meeting, bring up driving directions to the meeting, as well as send automatic messages to the attendees if you’re running late. You can also get updates on flight statuses if you’re traveling. The app uses an algorithm to scan your calendars, contact list, and emails for relevant information, and then it ties it all back to specific appointments on your calendar.

For instance, after entering in a new appointment/meeting, Tempo will automatically scan your contacts, email etc. to find information relevant to that specific meeting, like contacts of people you’re meeting with and emails that pertain to the appointment or meeting, as well as any documents that you might have lying around.

The developers behind the new app come out of SRI International, which is the research institute that also created the Siri technology currently on iOS devices. The company obviously was bought out by Apple in order for Siri to be used on the iPhone and iPad, but while Tempo has some of the same qualities as Siri, the app takes a slightly different approach, and only focuses on calendar organization. The app is only available for the iPhone right now, and it’s ready for download in the iTunes App Store now.
