New in-car GPS tech uses motion sensors for accurate, autonomous city driving

New incar GPS tech could wield motion sensors for extraaccurate city driving

In-car GPS developers have long had to wrestle with the urban canyon effect that blocks or bounces signals downtown: they often have to make best guesses for accuracy when they can’t count on cellular or WiFi triangulation to pick up the slack, like a smartphone would. The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid has nonetheless found a way to borrow a page from mobile devices to get that accuracy back. By supplementing the GPS data with accelerometers and gyroscopes, researchers can use direction changes and speed to fill in the blanks, improving accuracy from a crude-at-best 49 feet to between 3 and 7 feet. The University’s creation doesn’t just minimize the chance of a wrong turn; it could be key to intelligent or driverless cars that have to perform sudden maneuvers all on their own. While the enhanced system is just a prototype without a commercialization schedule, it already slots into just about any car, including the University’s own intelligent car prototype (not pictured here). We may no longer have to lump car GPS units into the same “close is good enough” category as horseshoes and hand grenades.

Skype 6.1 For Windows Desktop Boasts Of Outlook Integration

Skype 6.1 For Windows Desktop Boasts Of Outlook IntegrationWhen Skype was released all those years ago, who would have thought that it would have grown to be such a big monster than it is today? Well, Skype has now entered version 6.1 territory (for the Windows platform anyways), where it sports Outlook integration alongside a visual update to the toolbar. In a nutshell, Skype 6.1 for Windows is an exciting development, simply because many folks still spend a significant amount of their time on email, and no longer do you need to toggle between your email and Skype desktop clients, since it is very convenient to send a Skype instant message, begin a free Skype to Skype call, or perhaps even to make a call to any mobile or landline within Outlook itself.

Microsoft has now integrated both Skype and Outlook to display contacts’ online status, contact information and mood message, right within the Outlook contact card. Not only that, you can now call anyone on their mobile or landline from Outlook, letting Skype perform the initiation process, as long as their contact information remains in Outlook. Best of all is, you don’t even need to befriend them over Skype first. You will be able to download Skype 6.1 for Windows here if you are interested.

Carrie Underwood’s Projection Dress

Carrie Underwood’s Projection DressCelebrities tend to be on the cutting edge of fashion as well, and at the recently concluded 55th Grammy Awards, the beautiful Carrie Underwood graced the stage during her performance of “Blown Away” and “Two Black Cadillacs” by wearing a unique “projection dress”, which is a bespoke platinum colored satin gown from Theia. This unique dress enabled a series of animated images to be projected upon it, as though she was wearing a projection screen all the way.

Definitely a different animal from the now oh-so-usual illuminated gown, Carrie Underwood’s spectacular gown showed the world how a basically simple idea can be executed flawlessly, helping enhance what could very well be a drab performance, not that I am taking anything away from her performance over at the Grammies. Unfortunately, there is a very big drawback to such a dress, as Underwood remained anchored to a segment of the stage, hence greatly limiting her movement. Interesting piece of haute couture, but will it catch on? Just how much would you fork out for something like this?

Amazon MP3 adds Ford SYNC support for Android, makes you vocalize your bad taste

If we’re being honest, many of you probably won’t care too much about the latest update to Amazon MP3 for Android. Why? Well, the big new feature is Ford SYNC support, and we’re pretty sure that a majority of cars on the road aren’t packing the in-dash infotainment system yet. But, it is still quite a popular feature in new Ford vehicles and there’s definitely a healthy number of drivers out there eager to put their Amazon music collection just a voice command away while they toil away in rush hour traffic. Version 2.8 of the app also includes the requisite bug fixes and a tweaked store that displays more search results. But we know all you really care about is the ability to tell your car to “play Usher” without feeling judged. Time to celebrate.

MacBook Pro With Retina Display Prices Updated

MacBook Pro With Retina Display Prices UpdatedApple products are generally known to cost more than their Windows-powered counterparts, but over the years, you can say that the gap has been reduced significantly. Well, even better news for folks who are operating on a tight budget and yet want to pick up a new MacBook Pro with Retina display – Apple has decided to update its pricing by throwing in better processors at a more pocket-friendly sticker price. For starters, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display will now start at $1,499 for 128GB of flash, and $1,699 for a new 2.6 GHz processor and 256GB of flash memory.

As for the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, it will now run on a faster 2.4 GHz quad-core processor, with the top-of-the-line 15-inch notebook boasting a new 2.7 GHz quad-core processor and 16GB of memory. Not only that, the 13-inch MacBook Air with 256GB of flash memory will also see its price slashed to a new low of $1,399. The new pricing has taken effect immediately via Apple’s online store as well as at retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. I wonder how folks who purchased a new MacBook Pro with Retina display last week felt with the new prices. [Press Release]

HTC countdown all but confirms new “One” device

There’s no shortage of HTC rumors going around, and HTC’s upcoming event on February 19 has just added speculation to the fire. However, HTC has given us a huge clue that pretty much all but confirms that the HTC One is real (previously known as the HTC M7). The company posted up a countdown to its February 19 event that highlights the “1″ in the seconds column every time it comes around.

Screen Shot 2013-02-13 at 10.05.09 AM

Also, every time the countdown hits “1″ in the instance, a quick video plays in the background of what is possibly a glimpse at the HTC One itself. In fact, there’s a fan-made video that puts together all of these mysterious clips into one to create a teaser trailer of sorts. The video is only 20 seconds long, but it includes all of the short clips featured in HTC’s countdown, and gives us a slightly better idea of what we’re looking at.

Obviously, the video doesn’t provide a lot of details on what the phone looks like, and we mostly just see corners and edges, as well as a glimpse of the back panel. As far as comparing it to the latest leaked render of the device, there’s really not enough information yet to put the two together.

Then again, the countdown and the video are huge tells, and it pretty much just makes us even more excited for what HTC has in store come next Tuesday. Of course, we’ll be there live covering the event as it happens, so be sure to stay tuned come next Tuesday and we’ll finally see what HTC will be pulling out of its hat.

Amazon Cloud Player Now In Ford SYNC Applink-equipped Vehicles

Amazon Cloud Player Now In Ford SYNC Applink equipped Vehicles If you have had pretty good experiences with the Amazon Cloud Player in the past, you will be pleased to hear that it has been announced to see action in Ford SYNC Applink-equipped rides, which basically means that Ford owners are now able to hook up the Amazon MP3 app on their Android-powered smartphone sans wires to the SYNC connectivity system. This eliminates the need to use up precious space in your ride to hold physical CDS, and there would also be a whole lot less wires to worry about.

The Amazon Cloud Player will be available on the 2013 Ford Fiesta, Mustang, Focus, E-Series, C-MAX Hybrid, Expedition, Fusion, F-150 and Super Duty models, just in case you were thinking of upgrading your ride sometime in the near future. Eligible music can be enjoyed in high-quality 256kbps audio, and while that is not exactly what purists would want to listen to, it is a whole lot better than 128kbps encoding, don’t you think so?
