Microsoft starts shipping Surface Pro again, says more coming to market ‘quickly’

Microsoft starts shipping

Microsoft’s trying to address the recent shortfall of Surface Pro models, and has vowed via its Surface Pro blog to get more into the market “as quickly as we can.” As such, it’s begun dispatching 64GB SKUs to Best Buy, Staples and its own Microsoft Store in the US, with Canada to follow in a few days. 128GB SKUs will ship “later this week” to retailers, according to Redmond, “with some units available by the end of the week.” All flavors of the tablet-cum-laptop disappeared from shelves shortly after they arrived in retail stores and online, both stateside and north of the border. The company said it’ll fulfill orders for customers who made a reservation first, but that your local retailer “should have (stock) soon,” too.

‘Cougar Town’: Jules Has A Bad Reaction To Sleeping Pills, Sleepwalks And Hallucinates (VIDEO)

The cul de sac crew has settled in nicely on their new TBS home. The latest episode of “Cougar Town” kept all the sweetness and zaniness of the gang in tact, and even introduced a new feature that absolutely should become a recurring one.

Having trouble sleeping, Jules succumbs to peer pressure and agrees to take a sleeping pill. While it knocks her out, it also kicks off the longest night for everyone else. Jules was sleepwalking and hallucinating, leading to some hilarious encounters throughout the house.

At one point, she was “trying to close the tomato cage,” which was just the kitchen cabinet, while in another she was trying to convince Grayson to take off his bikini and do it on the beach with her — this while sitting on him in their bedroom.

Obama: Minimum Wage Increase Will Boost ‘Rising, Thriving Middle Class’

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Tuesday night laid out a vision for a society in which everyone has a fair shot at a decent education, adequate health care and a job that pays a living wage.

“It is our generation’s task, then, to reignite the true engine of America’s economic growth — a rising, thriving middle class,” said the president in the first State of the Union address of his second term. “It is our unfinished task to restore the basic bargain that built this country — the idea that if you work hard and meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead, no matter where you come from, no matter what you look like, or who you love.”

The president’s most notable proposal was to raise the minimum wage from its current $7.25 an hour to $9 an hour. A worker making the minimum wage now earns just $14,500 a year — well below the living wage in many areas. Obama also proposed indexing it to inflation, so that when the cost of living goes up, so do earnings.

Valve fires hardware hacker Jeri Ellsworth

Jeri Ellsworth, a hardware hacker from Seattle who was hired by Valve last year to work on game hardware, just announced on Twitter that she has been fired. No other information was offered, such as the reasons for her sudden departure or what she plans to do now, aside from “new exciting projects.” Valve hasn’t said anything about the decision, either.

jeri ellsworth

The tweet showed up at 9:40pm EST, and was both simple and direct, stating: “Yup. Got fired today. Time for new exciting projects.” She hasn’t yet responded to any inquiries about what went down and what she plans on doing next. Ellsworth is perhaps most popularly known for the Commodore 64 emulator joystick she created before joining Valve, which sold over half a million units.

The folks over at Engadget interviewed Ellsworth back in September 2012, during which time she is said to have expressed enthusiasm for her job, speaking fondly of the company’s work environment. During that time, she said that her team was working on the development of a controller to make playing Steam games more enjoyable.

Per the interview, it was obvious that Ellsworth hadn’t had any plans to leave the company, having stated that her team has a one-year goal for creating the controller, among other things. What went wrong that prompted the company to fire her is unknown, and there’s a good chance an explanation will never surface. Still, we’ll be keeping an eye out for more details, so stay tuned.

Roger Hickey: Yes to Obama’s New Jobs Focus. But Defend Health and Retirement Benefits.

With tonight’s State of the Union address, President Obama attempted to refocus his new second term with a focus on jobs and supporting the middle class. He clearly wants to stop talking about deficits and debt and start talking about reviving the economy for people. His best line was a clear attempt to pivot in the right direction:

“Let’s be clear: deficit reduction alone is not an economic plan. A growing economy that creates good, middle-jobs – that must be the North Star that guides our efforts.”

And yet, as Al Pacino, who longs to escape the mob, laments in The Godfather, “Just when I thought I was out…they pull me back in” President Obama feels like he has to assert that “a plan to reduce the deficit must be part of our agenda” and that he must keep negotiating with Republicans about cutting spending and raising taxes. He could have declared tonight that we’ve done enough on deficit reduction – and that, as the Economic Policy Institute has recently explained, we have stabilized the debt as a percentage of GDP and we should be spending money to spur growth. Instead, President Obama has clearly embraced the urging of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (and Republicans to the right of CBPP) that he needs to find and additional $1.5 trillion more in deficit reductions. As a result, he’s got most of the progressive movement working earnestly that we can accomplish this conservative goal in a way that doesn’t cut important spending – and mostly by raising taxes progressively – or cuts Pentagon spending.

Rand Paul Response: Senator Gives Tea Party Rebuttal To Obama’s State Of The Union Address

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) gave the Tea Party rebuttal to President Obama’s State of the Union address on Tuesday evening, warning against the dangers of big government.

In his response to the president’s speech, Paul criticized both parties for rampant spending in Washington. However, he saved his sharpest barbs for Obama, particularly in a line that drew comparisons to former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s infamous “gifts” remarks.

“The president offers you free stuff, but his policies keep you poor,” Paul said.
