State Of The Union Speech Promises Climate Change Executive Action

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama Tuesday night pledged that if Congress refuses to take action to stem climate change, his administration would act unilaterally.

“I urge this Congress to pursue a bipartisan, market-based solution to climate change, like the one John McCain and Joe Lieberman worked on together a few years ago,” Obama said, as McCain offered a tight smile from a back row. “But if Congress won’t act soon to protect future generations, I will. I will direct my cabinet to come up with executive actions we can take, now and in the future, to reduce pollution, prepare our communities for the consequences of climate change, and speed the transition to more sustainable sources of energy.”

There’s about zero chance that the GOP-led House will pass climate change legislation this session, given that many of its members do not acknowledge that human activity has anything to do with it, if it’s happening at all.

Alcatel One Touch Star Does The Mid-Range Dance

Alcatel One Touch Star Does The Mid Range DanceDo you remember the kind of handsets that Alcatel came up with in the past? I clearly remember their AA-battery powered models, which personally, I felt was a waste as those AA batteries could have served a Game Boy far better, but then again that is my personal opinion. Well, Alcatel does seem to be making a soft comeback of sorts with their Alcatel One Touch Star, and judging by the hardware specifications, folks who are on the lookout for a mid-range device will be able to check it out as it does seem to be a decent device that is set to arrive across the pond soon.

In Sweden, the Alcatel One Touch Star is set to retail for around $315 as an unlocked device, where that will net you a 4-inch 480×800 touchscreen display, a 5-megapixel shooter at the back with LED flash capability, a VGA camera in front, powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor, accompanied by 512MB RAM, 4GB of internal memory and a microSD memory card slot for expansion purposes, all running on a 1,500mAh battery, with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice being most likely. I suppose all will be revealed at Mobile World Congress that is set to happen real soon, so stay tuned!

Marco Rubio Response To Obama’s State Of The Union Is First Big Test On Long Road To 2016

WASHINGTON -– Marco Rubio’s speech Tuesday night elevated him to the national stage, but also presented him with his first real test on the long and winding road to the 2016 presidential election.

Rubio, who has enjoyed reams of positive attention since the November night that Mitt Romney’s electoral loss exposed the GOP’s terrible relationship with Hispanic voters, came under some of the harshest attacks he has experienced on the national level in the hours leading up to, and following, his remarks.

And, thanks to a case of dry mouth, he also had the first truly embarrassing gaffe of his national political career.

State Of The Union Fact Check: Obama’s Big Speech Scrutinized

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama did some cherry-picking Tuesday night in defense of his record on jobs and laid out a conditional path to citizenship for illegal immigrants that may be less onerous than he made it sound.

Controller designer, hardware lead Jeri Ellsworth out at Valve

Controller designer, hardware lead Jeri Ellsworth out at Valve

We’re still eagerly awaiting Steambox-spec’d hardware in our living rooms but Valve’s endeavor into hardware will move on minus one party member, noted inventor / hacker Jeri Ellsworth. She reported the firing in a tweet earlier today, however any reasons, future plans or possible link to the project itself were not mentioned. When we spoke to Ellsworth last fall, she was working on controller prototypes to address mouse/keyboard use from the couch. At the time she also happily noted the Valve corporate culture’s acceptance of risk-taking and failure on the way to new product development. We’ve attempted to contact both parties and will report back if we hear any other details — especially if they include any more fashion / Commodore 64 mashups.

Microsoft addresses 57 security vulnerabilities this Patch Tuesday

Today is Patch Tuesday, and Microsoft has released a slew of fixes to security vulnerabilities. A total of 57 security issues were dealt with this time around, all of which were pushed out through 12 different updates, five of which were critical. The updates were applied to a range of Microsoft products, including Windows and Internet Explorer.

microsoft

One of the most important patches pushed through is for Internet Explorer, addressing a vulnerability with an ActiveX DLL. This vulnerability is being actively exploited in the wild, and so it has been bestowed with the Critical rating. For this reason, users should install the Internet Explorer updates as soon as possible to avoid possible attack via the vulnerability.

Another critical update has to do with Windows’ Object Linking and Embedding Automation, which is also subject to exploitation without the updates. Says Microsoft, this vulnerability puts servers and workstations most at risk, especially if those workstations allow multiple user logins that have authorization to run programs.

Other critical updates concern Windows itself and Exchange Server. Exchange Sever has several issues addressed with the updates, one vulnerability of which has to do with the product’s WebReady Document Viewing. The Windows issue being addressed, meanwhile, concerns an issue with DirectShow that leaves the system open to attack.
