LG Optimus G Pro Officially Has a 5.5-inch Display

LG Optimus G Pro Officially Has a 5.5 inch Display

Although the Japanese version of the LG Optimus G is already on the market, the world was eagerly awaiting for some certainty as for the International version, and the U.S version will most likely be derivatives of that one. First of all the LG Optimus G Pro is officially a “Phablet”, thanks to its huge 5.5″ 1080p (full HD) IPS Display. From a processor standpoint, the Optimus G Pro will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro just like its predecessor. There’s 2GB  of RAM and 32GB of internal storage (no microSD, sorry). There’s one more bit of good news: the battery will stand at 3140mAh and that should provide enough room for power users to play with.

We’ve been quite enthusiastic about the LG Optmus G, and so far, it seems that the Optimus G Pro improves where it was needed the most, namely the display quality (1080p) and the larger battery. The 5.5″ size is welcome for folks (like me) who like the comfort of a large display. This will raise the bar for the upcoming Nexus Phone…

As you may have seen, LG has also announced lower-end LG Optimus L Series II smartphones yesterday, with the LG L5II, L3II and L7II. All handsets should be on display at Mobile World Congress in a couple of weeks. [LG site, in Korean]

Motorola Solutions launches Android-based AME 2000 for the spies among us

Motorola Solutions has announced its AME 2000 device, an Android-based system designed for government and enterprise users who require data security. The Assured Mobile Environment solution utilizes a COTS (commercial-off-the-shelf) device to provide end-to-end data and voice encryption. The handset has officially been launched, but needless you say, it’s not something you can pick up at your local tech store.

AME 2000 offers a variety of features, the most important of which is its end-to-end encryption. Users will benefit from its AES 256 and NSA Suite B encryption for both voice and messages sent between two or more AME devices. To ensure that data is secure in transit over both private and public networks, the device also offers a Suite B IPSec VPN for encryption over wifi, 3G/4G and GSM.

The handset utilizes the Motorola CRYPTR micro in the device’s microSD card for secure session tokens, security certificates, and keys. Users can install their own applications in addition to the on-board browser and messaging applications. All installed applications are updated over-the-air, and to make sure everything stays safe, the encryption keys can be wiped from a remote location if the handset is stolen or misplaced.

Motorola’s Vice President of its US Federal Government Markets Division, Paul Mueller, offered this statement. “Secure mobility is among the U.S. government’s top technology priorities. The AME 2000 features a familiar Android-based OS experience with layered security, device management and applications that comply with federal guidelines. It’s an affordable mobile solution for civilian and defense agencies to better execute their missions that serve and protect our nation.”

Julia Pastrana, Mexican ‘Ape Woman,’ Buried After 150 Years

SINALOA DE LEYVA, Mexico — An indigenous Mexican woman put on display in Victorian-era Europe because of a rare genetic condition that covered her face in thick hair has been buried in her home state in a ceremony that ends one of the best-known episodes from an era when live human beings were treated as collectible specimens.

With her hairy face and body, jutting jaw and other deformities, Julia Pastrana became known as “ape woman” after she was taken to the U.S. by showman Theodore Lent in 1854, when she was 20. She died in childbirth in 1860 and her body ended up at the University of Oslo, Norway.
