Eric Kessler announces AirPlay support for HBO Go and Max Go apps, says à la carte HBO access still isn’t economically viable

Eric Kessler announces AirPlay support for HBO Go and Max Go apps, says la carte HBO access still isn't economically viable

Eric Kessler, President & COO at HBO, just announced that a long-awaited feature will be going live today during his interview at D:Dive Into Media 2013. HBO Go and Max Go users with Apple products filling the home will now be able to enjoy AirPlay beaming. Straight from the man himself:

“Our long-term goal for Go is to be on all platforms and all devices. Effective today, we will be enabling AirPlay — any device that allows users to watch on the big screen is great. You can play HBO Go on your iPhone or iPad, and then beam that to your HDTV via an Apple TV using AirPlay.”

It appears that neither app has seen an update in Apple’s App Store just yet, but we’re guessing it’s only a matter of time before both are refreshed. [Update: Looks as if both updates are now live!] Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that HBO will be on Apple TV for some time yet. Host Kara Swisher asked Kessler what the problem was in getting ’em on there. His reply? “We will get on Apple TV — there is no problem. These things take time.”

We spoke firsthand with Kessler following his interview, and he affirmed that there’s no 30 percent revenue cut to worry about with Apple TV like there is for conventional apps on the App Store. It seemed that HBO simply viewed this as a lower priority now that AirPlay is a reality, and it may go a long way to explaining why so many other video apps are opting for AirPlay inclusion rather than focusing efforts on a dedicated Apple TV app.

Fitbit updates Android app with wireless syncing over Bluetooth 4.0

Fitbit updates Android app with wireless syncing over Bluetooth 40

Fitbit promised wireless syncing and, as of today, it’s finally delivered. An Android-only app update, currently live in Google Play, will now allow Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II users to transfer data wirelessly from their Zip or One Activity Trackers to the Fitbit application. The new feature, which works over Bluetooth 4.0, was previously announced at this past CES alongside news of the Flex band, and initially targeted for an end-of-January release. But that’s not all this update heralds — it also packs the ability to manage silent alarms, adds push notifications, a distance tile and additional tap-to-pair NFC functionality for use with the Flex. Unfortunately, you’ll still have to wait a bit for that lifestyle band to launch, as Fitbit’s only committed to a vague spring launch. For now, though, a small segment of existing users can enjoy this enhanced feature set.

Nintendo Wii U Delivers First Free-To-Play Game This Week With TANK! TANK! TANK!

Nintendo Wii U Delivers First Free To Play Game This Week With TANK! TANK! TANK!

Free-to-play titles have been gaining in popularity recently thanks in part to mobile gaming. $.99 games seem to be too rich for anyone’s blood, especially when they spent hundreds of dollars on their smartphone or tablet, which means free-to-play games are the way to go these days. The Wii U will receive its first free-to-play title this week, marking the first next-generation console to offer such an experience.

Namco’s TANK! TANK! TANK! was a launch title for the Wii U that originally retailed for $49.99, but starting this week, the game will go completely free-to-play once Nintendo’s eShop update goes into affect in Europe. (more…)

7 Worst Battery Life-Guzzling Gadgets

There is a disturbing trend in the gadget world, and it’s that laptop, tablet and phone makers aren’t taking battery life seriously enough. Yes, having touch on a Windows 8 notebook is great, but not if the computer lasts an hour and a half less than one without that capability. And what good is a smartphone with an HD display and superfast processor if you have to plug it in around lunchtime? We run our homemade battery test, which involves continuous Web surfing at 40 percent brightness, on every device we review. And if the endurance isn’t good enough, regardless of the gadget’s other features, we simply won’t recommend it. More »

NVIDIA Highlights Project SHIELD’s Non-Steam PC Game Experience

Last week, NVIDIA highlighted its Project SHIELD in the first video of its PC Mondays series by showing us how exactly the device will sync up with your PCs. The process was easier than we originally anticipated as it took very little effort to get the PC version of Borderlands 2 up and running through Steam.

One concern people had regarding the demo was how exactly non-Steam games would play. This week’s video highlights playing non-Steam games, one of which is EA Games’ Need for Speed: Most Wanted. (more…)

Android Emulator BlueStacks Delivers 750,000 Android Apps To Windows

Android Emulator BlueStacks Delivers 750,000 Android Apps To Windows

Android Fruit-Ninja running on Windows 8

Those who have looked at Windows 8 in general and at the Microsoft Surface Pro tablet in particular may find that there are not as many apps built for the tablet format as one may desire. Since the Windows SDK is rather very good, we think that this is only a matter of time before the number of quality apps is high enough, but in the meantime, what about running Android apps? That’s exactly what BlueStacks aims to do with a “Windows 8 optimized” software platform that can run Android apps – think of it as an Android emulator if you want. Note that I use the term “emulator” in a liberal way, since BlueStacks is not designed to run the Android OS, but only its apps. (more…)

Vuzix Wrap 1200AR Augmented Reality Glasses Now Shipping

If you have a serious need to own your own pair of augmented reality glasses so you can pretend you’re Sergey Brin, Vuzix has a new set of AR glasses that are now available.

vuzix wrap 1200ar glasses

The Vuzix Wrap 1200AR glasses offer two small screens that combine to create a 75-inch virtual screen as viewed from 10 feet away. The glasses support both 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios and support display resolutions of up to 720p (though the actual display panels are 800×480 WVGA resolution). The displays have 60 Hz progressive scan update and a 35° diagonal field of view. The little screens also support 24-bit true color.

The glasses themselves weigh about 3 ounces and are highly adjustable allowing users to adjust the diopter and eye separation. They also have display angle adjustment and a pair of discrete 640×480 video cameras which can capture video at 30 frames per second. They’re loaded with a number of sensors including magnetometers, accelerometers, and gyros, allowing for full head tracking.

Despite being lightweight, this isn’t exactly a portable rig – they’re designed to connect to a computer via USB and VGA connections, and you’ll need some augmented reality applications in order to take advantage of them. But assuming you do all of this, you’ll soon be seeing stuff like this right before your eyes (and nobody else around you will.)

You need to have fairly deep pockets if you want to play with a set of these, because they sell for $1499 (USD). But then again, you don’t have a whole lot of cheaper choices unless Google actually releases their Google Glasses to the public.

Our Favorite Lightweight Headphones Are Your Deal of the Day

These Sennheisers are not fashion headphones. They don’t have a multi-million dollar marketing campaign behind them. They don’t have legions of rapper endorsements. What they are is well-designed, comfortable, and beautiful-sounding headphones that are currently at Amazon’s lowest historical price. Mario Aguilar reviewed them back in May and loved them: More »
