— Detroit manager Jim Leyland arrived at the Tigers’ training camp Monday in Lakeland, Fla., marking 50 seasons since he first showed up there as a pencil-thin 18-year-old prospect.
If you were expecting sepia-tinged memories about a kid from Ohio basking in the sunshine and seeing his dream laid out in front of him, well, you don’t know Leyland. Or at least not well enough.
The “Sex And The City” actress reportedly turned down a $500,000 deal to appear on an episode of The CW’s “Sex And The City” prequel in a flash-forward sequence.
While it’s always fun to buy things, it’s not always fun that you have to deplete your funds to make it so. These new wallets serve as a not-so-subtle reminder to think about how you’re spending your precious cash every time you open them up.
Each of the Sonic Wallets offer a variety of unique sound effects to accompany the imagery on its outside. For instance, the Edvard Munch-inspired “The Scream” wallet lets out a horrible variety of blood-curdling screams whenever you open it to take out your cash or credit cards:
There are a total of eight designs available, including an American flag, baseball, Buddha, drum machine, Jesus, Moolah the Cow, and my personal favorite, the Shakespearean insult wallet:
Though I’m not sure if the wallet is tossing barbs like “You are a tedious fool” and “Out of my sight, though dost infect my eyes!” at the snot-nosed punk cashier or at the owner of the wallet.
Each wallet is made from durable Dupont Tyvek, and sells for $19.95(USD). Check out all of the different designs and sounds over at Gadgets & Gear.
Sure, these could get annoying after a while, but maybe that’ll teach you to spend less money – or the battery will eventually die (after a few thousand uses.)
Think about how much power our bodies generate. We are truly machines, constantly taking in energy and burning or storing it for future use. We rely on electronic devices for so many parts of our life, all of which have to be plugged into a power source. It seems logical that we should be able to harness the energy in our body and funnel it towards electrical uses. Many have tried and it finally looks like someone succeeded in making an efficient device to do exactly that.
Fujifilm recently revealed a high-efficiency Thermoelectric Converter in a flexible film format. The thought is the substance attaches to our skin and immediately begins producing electricity from the heat you give off. Fujifilm’s particular polymer can be manufactured via printer too, which enables virtually any size or shape film. Solar power could be added to the film to enable even more charging. Imagine running low on phone power, applying this film, plugging into the phone and letting your body heat charge your device. OK, maybe that is far off. Medical devices would probably be the first to experience this au-natural charging product. Live demonstrations of the product are occurring at trade shows so hopefully some manufacturers will take note. And maybe someday our body heat will charge our lives.
Fitbit, one of the more popular fitness tracking platforms, has updated its Android app with a couple of new features that users will definitely want to take advantage of. The new app now supports Bluetooth 4.0, for which wireless syncing capabilities are now possible. It’s a feature that’s still in beta mode, however, and only supports a handful of devices so far, specifically only the Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II.
To get wireless syncing up and running, all you need to do is tick the “Background Sync” option in Settings. From there, you’ll no longer need your computer to sync, which is something that many developers are moving towards as we slowly transition to being a post-PC world. The improved Bluetooth support is also said to cut down on battery life a bit, something that is certainly always welcome.
Aside from the wireless syncing, the update also comes with push notifications, as well as a new distance meter on the dashboard. You now also have the ability to create and edit silent alarms. It seems like the update is a good one for Fitbit users, but again, you’ll have to have a Galaxy S III or Note II in order to update.
As for other Android device owners, we’re not sure when Fitbit will begin to support more devices with this new update, but they say that further compatibility will be “available shortly.” In the meantime, Start saying goodbye to the old ways of syncing, because soon you won’t need your computer for it any longer.
Fans of Naughty Dog’s upcoming game The Last of Us were no doubt anticipating the game’s release on May 7, but it seems like you’ll have to wait a bit longer as Sony quietly pushed the game’s release date.
The good news is the delay will not be that bad as it’s being delayed by a little over a month to June 18, which BestBuy has confirmed to their pre-order holders. Since Sony has yet to make the news official, there’s no information at this time as to what exactly is the reasoning behind the delay. (more…)
Detroit — As he prepares to deliver what could be his final State of the City speech Wednesday, speculation is swirling over whether embattled Mayor Dave Bing will fight to retain his seat.
The first-term mayor, 69, has until May 14 to officially decide his next steps, and City Hall observers are watching for hints on whether he will run. Political insiders are buzzing about a possible campaign fundraiser later this month, but mayoral officials would not confirm the event.

Butler, who scuffled in 2012 with films like “Chasing Mavericks” and “Playing the Field,” looks to return with a vengeance in “Olympus Has Fallen,” which comes from director Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”). The film focuses on a former Secret Service agent (Butler) who must save the president (Aaron Eckhart) after the White House is overrun with terrorists. Morgan Freeman and Angela Bassett co-star as government officials trying to keep the country running.
WASHINGTON — Denver Nuggets star Kenneth Faried has become the first NBA player to join an organization devoted to fighting homophobia in sports, and said he hopes his involvement will raise awareness of gay rights in professional basketball.
Equal rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community is close to the heart of Faried, nicknamed the “Manimal” for his fierceness on the court. The 23-year-old forward was raised in New Jersey by two mothers, who married in 2007. Faried recently appeared with his mothers in a video for the advocacy group OneColorado, to encourage Colorado to legalize civil unions.
“Becoming an Athlete Ally gives me the opportunity to spread a message of inclusiveness throughout the NBA and our country,” said Faried in a statement to The Huffington Post, referring to the non-profit group that advocates for gay rights in sports. “I have two moms and I love them both very much. I respect, honor and support them in every way. The bond I have with them has made me realize that I want all members of the LGBT community — whether they are parents, players, coaches or fans — to feel welcome in the NBA and in all of our communities.”
