Samsung Display drops injunction request against LG Display, moves closer to OLED peace

While actual peace is suddenly in some doubt in the region, Korean display makers LG Display and Samsung Display have moved a step closer to resolving their legal issues. Yonhap News reports that Samsung has dropped a request to block LG’s products based on the use of its confidential OLED tech. LG responded by trying to ban several Galaxy phones and tablets, however just a few days ago it was reported that the two are meeting behind closed doors to work out the disagreements. If they can come to an agreement, let’s hope that spirit of goodwill can extend to nuke wielding world leaders and tech giants alike.

Obama Calls North Korea’s Nuclear Program A Global Threat

By Roberta Rampton

WASHINGTON, Feb 12 (Reuters) – U.S. President Barack Obama said a nuclear test by North Korea was a “highly provocative act” that hurt regional stability, calling Pyongyang’s nuclear program a threat to the United States, its allies, and to international security.

“The danger posed by North Korea’s threatening activities warrants further swift and credible action by the international community. The United States will also continue to take steps necessary to defend ourselves and our allies,” Obama said in a statement.

North Korea’s third-ever nuclear test came less than 24 hours before Obama was slated to give his annual State of the Union address, a televised speech viewed by millions of Americans that is now almost certain to refer to North Korea’s actions.

“This is a highly provocative act,” Obama said, noting the test violated North Korea’s obligations under United Nations and other international agreements.

North Korea is banned under U.N. Security Council resolutions from developing nuclear and missile technology. The tests drew condemnation from around the world.

The U.N. Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on North Korea’s apparent nuclear test at 9:00 a.m. EST (1400 GMT) on Tuesday where the United States, South Korea and others could begin the lengthy process of pressing for more sanctions on Pyongyang.

“We will strengthen close coordination with allies and partners and work with our Six-Party partners, the United Nations Security Council, and other UN member states to pursue firm action,” Obama said.

HTC Droid DNA’s first update coming soon, bug fixes abound

According to a support page over at Verizon, HTC’s Droid DNA handset will receive its first – and major – update since it launched last year. The update will bring with it a myriad of bug fixes for a lot of problems users have reported, as well as improvements to audio quality and new features. The update hasn’t rolled out yet and there’s no word on when exactly it will happen, but all signs point to “soon.”

The update slated for release is build 2.04.605.2, and will leave users at 4.1 instead of 4.2 Jelly Bean, sadly. Still, the update will bring with it a slew of bug fixes, as well as some new features and improvements. Hotspot connectivity and the audio quality experienced when using headsets and ear pieces are two such improvements, as well as Bluetooth connectivity and volume level.

Wireless Internet connectivity has also been improved, likely for a more stable connection, though the support page doesn’t specify. The default browser on the device will have improved zooming capabilities, and the Enhanced Recent Apps fuction will also have some tweaks over the current version. The problem with messages showing an incorrect timestamp is also corrected by the update.

Says the support page, Contacts List has also been improved so that it is more stable and reliable. Finally, users will also be able to load Hulu Plus videos after the update, which is in excess of 100MB. Like all updates, you’ll receive a notification when it is available, so keep an eye on your handset, and drop us a line when you see the update roll out.

North Korea Nuclear Test: White House Issues Statement Condemning Test

The White House issued the following statement on Feb. 12, 2013 on North Korea’s announcement of a third nuclear test:

North Korea announced today that it conducted a third nuclear test. This is a highly provocative act that, following its December 12 ballistic missile launch, undermines regional stability, violates North Korea’s obligations under numerous United Nations Security Council resolutions, contravenes its commitments under the September 19, 2005 Joint Statement of the Six-Party Talks, and increases the risk of proliferation. North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs constitute a threat to U.S. national security and to international peace and security. The United States remains vigilant in the face of North Korean provocations and steadfast in our defense commitments to allies in the region.

These provocations do not make North Korea more secure. Far from achieving its stated goal of becoming a strong and prosperous nation, North Korea has instead increasingly isolated and impoverished its people through its ill-advised pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery.

According to users on Reddit who say they’ve received the update, the problem with Bluetooth audio streaming has been corrected somewhat, although it is being reported as still having occasional issues. One user reported that after updating, the Bluetooth still disconnects when the network changes from wifi to the mobile data network.

Per the screenshots Android Police has up, the update is build number JDQ39, and is 47.6MB. Users are receiving the update over the air, although many still haven’t had it arrive yet. Still, screenshots have cropped up showing the update on the GSM Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus 7 tablet, and the Nexus 10 tablet, so users with one or more of those devices will likely see the update within the next day or so.

Not much else is known at the moment, since nothing official has been posted. According to the system update screen that users have seen, the 4.2.2 update is said to improve “performance and stability.” Users can set up their own accounts on the devices for customizability, and there’s Gesture Typing for typing words by sliding one’s finger across the keys.

Tokyoflash Kisai OTO watch reacts to sound, combines time read-out with graphic equalizer (video)

Kisai OTO reacts to sound, combines time readout with graphic equalizer

Working with a concept sent in from a German fan, Tokyoflash‘s latest watch design bakes in a sound sensor which reacts to ambient noise through an on-wrist graphic equalizer. Naturally, the Kisai OTO also a packs time read-out, splitting hours, minutes and seconds (read vertically) across two lines. Above and below that, you’ll find the flickering equalizer, although anyone that finds it a little too distracting during the day can switch them off. You can even go completely the other way and nix the watch display for party hours. There’s still the requisite alarm and date settings and you can pick from blue, green red or amber light-up displays. All color options are all paired with a black anodized aluminum strap, while the watch can be charged through USB. It’s available to order now, with an introductory two-day sale price of $99 — and in case you were wondering, OTO means sound in Japanese. Which makes sense.

North Korea Nuclear Test: UN Security Council To Meet, Discuss Possible Sanctions Against Pyongyang (VIDEO)

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 12 (Reuters) – U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned as “deplorable” North Korea’s nuclear test on Tuesday, and U.N. diplomats said the Security Council scheduled an emergency meeting to discuss the possibility of imposing new sanctions on Pyongyang.

“The Secretary-General condemns the underground nuclear weapon test conducted by (North Korea) today,” Ban’s spokesman Martin Nesirky said in a statement. “It is a clear and grave violation of the relevant Security Council resolutions.”

“It is deplorable that Pyongyang defied the strong and unequivocal call from the international community to refrain from any further provocative measures,” he said.

“The Secretary-General is gravely concerned about the negative impact of this deeply destabilizing act on regional stability as well as the global efforts for nuclear non-proliferation,” the U.N. statement added.

South Korea’s U.N. mission said it called an emergency meeting of the 15-nation Security Council at 9 a.m. EST (1400 GMT) on Tuesday to discuss the nuclear test. It added that South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan would address the media in New York after the meeting.

South Korea is the president of the council this month, which gives it the possibility to convene meetings and ensure North Korea remains a priority issue for the United Nations’ most powerful body for the rest of February.

One Western diplomat said he hoped the council would approve an initial statement condemning the nuclear test on Tuesday and begin work on a more comprehensive council reaction.

Diplomats had said previously that the United States, South Korea and European members would want the Security Council to adopt a resolution imposing new sanctions on Pyongyang in the event of a third nuclear test in defiance of earlier council resolutions.

North Korea carried out nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009, which prompted the Security Council to impose sanctions – including a ban on the import of nuclear and missile technology and an arms embargo – on the impoverished authoritarian state.

Getting approval on a council resolution could take weeks. While China had made clear its opposition to a new North Korean nuclear test, council diplomats say Pyongyang’s ally Beijing could be expected to put up some resistance to tough new sanctions to avoid angering North Korea.

But eventually, the diplomats said, China would likely approve some form of sanctions against North Korea in the coming weeks.

Last month the Security Council adopted a resolution that tightened existing sanctions against Pyongyang in response to its December rocket launch. That resolution took a month to agree due to China’s initial resistance, diplomats said. (Reporting By Louis Charbonneau; editing by Christopher Wilson and Mohammad Zargham)

Obama’s Mortgage Crisis Working Group Falls Short Of Billing

WASHINGTON — Hours before last year’s State of the Union address, the Obama administration offered The Huffington Post with an exclusive. During his speech, President Barack Obama would announce a new law enforcement unit aimed at exposing and prosecuting financial fraud behind the housing crisis. The unit would be co-chaired by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, a progressive champion who’d been pressuring the White House to get tougher on banks.

“This is a big achievement and something the entire progressive advocacy community wanted [with respect to] housing policy,” a White House official said back then.

A year later, progressives said they consider the panel a disappointment and, possibly, a diversion to placate Schneiderman and homeowner advocates. The Justice Department said it doesn’t know what the fuss is about.
