DIY Wedding: Man Makes A Wedding Band Out Of A Coin (PHOTOS)

Michigan web designer Richard Crawford thought it would be too impersonal to simply buy his fiancee’s wedding band from a store. So he decided to make his own — out of a coin.

Crawford posted photos and step-by-step instructions for the wedding band he made out of a Canadian quarter to Imgur Saturday. He told HuffPost Weddings he had never done any sort of metal working before.

“I’d been vaguely aware that it was possible to make a ring out of a coin for a while so I did some (extensive) online research to figure out the details and whether or not it would be feasible,” Crawford said. “I figured I would give it a shot.”

Hurricane Sandy Survivors Demand Climate Change Action From Obama

WASHINGTON — Hurricane Sandy survivors and environmental advocates met in front of the White House on Monday to demand action from President Barack Obama on climate change ahead of his State of the Union address.

“We’re here to deliver over 280,000 signatures to President Obama asking for climate action now,” said Brad Johnson, campaign manager for the environmental group Forecast the Facts, which, along with 350.org, CREDO and Moms Clean Air Force, helped gather signatures and put together the demonstration. Approximately 15 people showed up on the gloomy, wet Monday.

“The president needs to make it clear he recognizes the need for action on climate change in the State of the Union address [on Tuesday], and the clearest way to start is rejecting [the] Keystone XL [pipeline] and rebuilding New York and New Jersey,” Johnson added.

Cardinal Roger Mahony To Help Elect New Pope Despite Disappointing On Sex Abuse Issues

LOS ANGELES — Catholic Cardinal Roger Mahony will help elect a new pope, despite recently being rebuked for not doing more to stop sexual abuse by priests when he led the Los Angeles Archdiocese.

Mahony has been barred from public duties in the archdiocese by the current archbishop because of revelations about his past handling of clergy pedophile cases. But Mahony remains in good standing as archbishop emeritus.

‘Stay’ Video: Rihanna Croons Her Way Through A Heartfelt Ballad

Rihanna debuted the video for “Stay” on Monday night. The song, a heartfelt ballad that’s among the better received tracks off “Unapologetic” is one of two recently released singles of the album.

The video premiered on E! News before making its way online. The music video for “Stay” shows a stripped-down Rihanna, as the singer soaks in a tub, looking vulnerable and forlorn. Never one to shy away from the scandalous, Rihanna appears naked in the video.

“Diamonds” was the only single released before “Unapologetic” hit stores. Def Jam recently announced that it was moving both “Stay” and “Pour It Up.” The two songs couldn’t be any more different: One is a sensitive ballad about love, loss and broken hearts, while “Pour It Up” sees Rihanna borrowing heavily from Juicy J’s strip club anthem, “Bands Make Her Dance.” (“Bands” and “Pour It Up” both feature sleepy production by Mike Will and focus on throwing cash around around naked women.)

Microsoft talks plans for premium content production, details Xbox 360’s transition to an ‘entertainment console’

Microsoft talks plans for premium content production, details Xbox 360's transition to an 'entertainment console'

Yusuf Mehdi, senior vice president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business, just sat down alongside Nancy Tellem, Corporate Vice President at Microsoft LA Studios, to kick off this year’s rendition of D:Dive Into Media here in Dana Point, Calif. The first session of the evening is being piloted by AllThingsD‘s Peter Kafka, and naturally, the topic of conversation is Xbox. For starters, Mehdi affirmed that Microsoft is witnessing an unmistakable transition of the Xbox 360 “from a gaming console to an entertainment console.” At present, the install base is up to 76 million (up from around 70 million at the close of September 2012), with US-based users using the console for some 87 hours per month.

In fact, he stated that 18 billion (yeah, with a “B”) hours of entertainment have been consumed on Xbox, and while Netflix is obviously the driving force, it might not be that way for much longer. He was quick to claim that Sony’s PlayStation 3 “isn’t as good of an entertainment console” — something he feels that “everybody knows” — and insinuated that the next-generation Xbox will stick to “big and premium.” In other words, don’t expect Microsoft to kick out a $50 Roku-style content box. Mehdi wants to ensure that the future of Xbox enables voice control, interactivity, and “other stuff that’s big and beautiful.”

1967 Postcard Arrives 46 Years Late, Mystifying Family (VIDEO)

Bert Jacobson was just 13 when he took a trip with his father and cousins to the East Coast and wrote his mother a postcard to describe the fun he was having. At that time, in 1967, Lyndon B. Johnson was president, the Beatles were groovy and postage home cost 4 cents.

That postcard never reached Jacobson’s mother — not until this week, that is, when the letter, dirtied and tattered, arrived at his family’s concrete business P.O. Box.

“It was an awesome trip,” Jacobson recalled, according to local outlet News9 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

State of The Union: Job Market Will Be Major Focus Of Speech

When President Barack Obama steps to the podium for Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, nearly everyone expects him to lay out proposals to generate job growth.

But nearly everyone also expects Republicans in the House to oppose whatever the president proposes, citing the need to limit spending to close the federal budget deficit. It’s the dynamic that has ruled Washington for the last five years as both parties seek a response to the economic crisis: Should the government spend more money in the short-term to boost demand and reduce unemployment, or immediately tackle a budget deficit that until recently topped $1 trillion?

It seems at times as if the political debate has become divorced from the real-life needs of people.

Antarctic Legged Research Base Crawls Out Of The Snow

Antarctic Legged Research Base Crawls Out Of The SnowOn February 5th 2013, Halley VI Research Station was officially opened.  It is located on the Brunt Ice shelf which is floating on the Weddell Sea.  Construction started in 2005 at a cost of £26 million, by Faber Maunsell and Hugh Broughton Architects who provided the winning design in an architectural design competition held by British Antarctic Survey and RIBA Competitions.

The biggest challenge for engineers in the Antarctic region is perhaps that everything gets snowed under over a period of time. The Halley VI station leaps over this problem, literally. The Pods of the station are mounted on hydraulic legs based on Ski’s. This configuration allows the station to get out of snow and move to a new location and away from the ocean. And that’s not all. The biggest pod is red in color and has a bar, lounges and a pool hall for recreation. It also houses a salad garden and a climbing wall, just so the people working there (about 70 in summers) do not lose their motivation and spirit during their stay.

The Halley VI base station is a true wonder of science and clearly shows that hard work and a bit of creative imagination can go a long way. For more photos, head to the official site.
