Senator Robert Menendez sought to discourage any plan by the United States government to donate port security equipment to the Dominican Republic, citing concern that the advanced screening gear might undermine efforts by a private company — run by a major campaign contributor and friend of his — to do the work.

Curiosity rover drills into Martian rock, looks for more evidence of water

Curiosity rover drills into Martian rock, looks for more evidence of water

NASA scientists won’t have to wait until InSight’s 2016 drilling mission to see what lies beneath the surface of Mars — Curiosity is already on the case. After developing a taste for Martian soil late last year, the intrepid rover has started exploring the red planet’s bedrock, drilling a 0.63 inch (1.6 cm) wide hole 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) deep into Mars’ surface. Curiosity will spend the next several days analyzing the resulting powder in hopes of finding evidence of a once-wet planet. The shallow hole marks the first drilling operation ever carried out on Mars, and getting there wasn’t easy. “Building a tool to interact forcefully with unpredictable rocks on Mars required an ambitious development and testing program,” explained Louise Jandura, the chief engineer of the rover’s sample system. “To get to the point of making this hole in a rock on Mars we made eight drills and bored more than 1,200 holes in 20 types of rock on Earth.” The Rover tested its drill by creating a shallower hole earlier this month, though samples will only be used from the second, deeper cavity. Check out the source link for more images of the operation, including an animated GIF of the drill in action.

NEW YORK — Tony Parker had 29 points and 11 assists in another brilliant performance without his two sidekicks, and the San Antonio Spurs dominated the second half to beat the Brooklyn Nets 111-86 on Sunday night.

Two nights after a loss in Detroit ended their 11-game winning streak, the Spurs got back on track quickly behind Parker, who fell short of his third straight 30-point game only because he was so good he sat out the final minutes of the rout.

Richard (RJ) Eskow: Increasing Social Security Benefits: An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Archaeologists of the future will sift through our newspapers, websites, and other ephemera and marvel at the inverted shape of our political debate. They’ll be particularly surprised to discover that, at a time when retirement security was being destroyed for an entire generation, politicians were posturing over how to make the problem even worse by cutting Social Security.

And they’ll marvel over how long it took us to agree on the right solution: Increasing Social Security benefits instead.

The concept of increasing Social Security has been around for a while. Strengthen Social Security, a coalition of 320 groups, reviewed the program’s ability to meet current and future nees and concluded that benefits should be increased rather than cut. The National Academy for Social Insurance proposed increasing benefits for vulnerable groups. The AFL-CIO has called for raising benefits. We got in the game, too, suggesting that a 15 percent increase in 2011 be included as part  of a forward-thinking progressive agenda.  (That earned us our only Rush Limbaugh rant so far – that was fun).

Roger Ailes Hopes To Grow Latino Audience For Fox News

Just as Republicans are soul-searching following the decisive electoral defeat in November that highlighted the country’s shifting demographics, Fox News, the party’s preferred cable news network, is looking inward amid record declines in ratings and credibility.

On Thursday, Politico’s Mike Allen and Jim VandeHei described both the party and network as “moving to purge the controversial political creatures they created.” So far, Fox News has opted not to renew the contracts of commentators Dick Morris or Sarah Palin, while bringing over from CNN Erick Erickson, editor of RedState and a prominent voice among grassroots conservatives.

But aside from swapping on-air political analysts, how does Fox News –- which hitched its wagon to Glenn Beck and the Tea Party at the beginning of President Obama’s first term — deal with the president’s second-term agenda?
