Gas Prices Jump Nearly 25 Cents In Last 2 Weeks

* U.S. retail gasoline averages $3.5918/gallon

* Rise comes in response to increases from wholesalers

* Brent crude oil hit nine-month high last week

NEW YORK, Feb 10 (Reuters) – The average price in the United States for a gallon of regular gasoline rose nearly 25 cents in the past two weeks, up steadily since December as refineries passed along their costs, a widely followed survey released on Sunday showed.

Gasoline prices averaged $3.5918 per gallon on Feb. 8, up 24.75 cents from Jan. 25, said Trilby Lundberg, editor of the Lundberg Survey.

“The amount of change is very big,” Lundberg said.

“The wholesale price increases accelerated in the past two weeks and that’s why we have the big rise.”

The retail price of regular gasoline in the United States has risen for seven weeks straight, Lundberg said.

The current average price is up 8.17 cents from a year earlier, she said.

Prices had declined for 11 weeks between Oct. 5, when gasoline touched near $3.84 per gallon, and Dec. 21, when they started to rise again.

“Now that the wholesale price hikes have accelerated, the need for retailers to raise prices on the street is becoming acute,” Lundberg said.

Brent crude oil futures hit a nine-month high above $119 a barrel on Friday, supported by data that showed strong growth in Chinese oil imports.

Brent’s premium to U.S. oil futures has increased on expectations that Midwest crude stockpiles will remain elevated as constraints on the Seaway pipeline continue to limit shippers’ ability to send crude to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Among the cities surveyed, Los Angeles drivers paid the most at $4.10 per gallon, and filling the gas tank cost the least in Billings, Montana, at $3.05 per gallon. (Reporting by Marcy Nicholson; Editing by Dale Hudson)

Cloudrobot hands-on: robot pugilists throw bombs, drop jaws

Cloudrobot hands-on

Cloudrobot is, potentially, the worst name we’ve ever heard for a product. Thankfully, if this robotic pugilist ever does come to market, we’re pretty confident it’ll be under a different brand. These fighters are not nearly as cute or pocketable as the Battroborgs that punched their way through the Engadget compound recently. In fact, these guys are down right intimidating. The product of six developers and engineers based out of Budapest, the 16-inch tall bots pack 21 motors, controlled by an AVR chip, that allow them a stunning range of motion and precision. The movements themselves are passed to the bot by a computer, which is currently running a crude simulation / video game. The punches, blocks and footwork are all triggered by a standard gamepad connected via Bluetooth.

Rather than risk serious damage to these expensive machines, their all metal bodies are protected from blows by Everlast-branded boxing gloves. And, in fact, they rarely come in contact with each other (at least in their current form). For now points are counted in the virtual environment, rather than in landed hooks and jabs. Which might not be bad since the bots gain quite a bit of mustard on their shots thanks to electromagnets in their feet that keep them anchored to the ring. Primarily those magnets are for stability, so that the occasional glancing blow doesn’t send them toppling over, but it also lets them “sit down” on their punches, just like a real boxer. The company is currently looking for an American partner to help them produce and market the robots. It also has a rather ambitious target price of $300 per combatant, which may have them making some tradeoffs in the final design. The best thing we can do, though, is let Cloudrobot speak for itself, so check out the video after the break.

New York Fashion Week Backstage Beauty: Cognac Ponytails At Alexander Wang Fall 2013 (PHOTOS)

Alexander Wang has proven himself year after year as a designer, sending out collections with a strong point of view and even stronger hair and makeup. His spring 2013 show featured models wearing electrical tape down their center hair part, and this season he delivered again with cognac-colored ponytails inspired by model Irina Kravchenko‘s fiery red locks.

Redken’s mane man Guido Palau explained that Wang wanted to do a “ponytail — very simple, but very dramatic because of the swatch of color in the back. It doesn’t have any reference to any period, though slightly futuristic.” The slicked-back hairdo, which he created using Redken Hardwear Gel, was meant to take personality away from the girls and their faces. He attached cognac hair extensions to a low ponytail. To hide the elastic, Palau soaked a strand of hair in strong hold hairspray and wrapped it around, securing with a bobby pin.

Helen Mirren Debuts Pink Hair At The BAFTAs (PHOTOS)

What do Dakota Fanning, Katy Perry and Helen Mirren have in common? Until Sunday’s BAFTA awards in London, not a whole lot, but Mirren’s bright new do put them all in a rarefied group of stars who have rocked pink hair.

“I saw it on America’s Next Top Model, so I decided to have a go,” Mirren, 67, told reporters of her tress inspiration. The cotton-candy hue highlighted her brand-new choppy pixie cut, which she showed off to great effect in a white crew-neck Nicholas Oakwell Couture gown with floral embroidery.

BAFTA Awards Winners 2013: Ben Affleck, ‘Argo,’ ‘Skyfall’ & More

The British Academy Film & Television Arts Awards — or BAFTAs — were announced on Sunday, and “Argo” and director Ben Affleck were big winners.

“Argo” won Best Film from the BAFTAs, beating “Les Miserables,” “Life of Pi,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” and — once again — “Lincoln.” Since the Oscar nominations were announced on Jan. 10, “Argo” has bested “Lincoln” at the Critics’ Choice Awards, Golden Globes, Producers Guild of America Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Affleck, who was famously snubbed in the Best Director category by the Academy Awards, also defeated “Lincoln” director Steven Spielberg at the Directors Guild Awards. As has been par for the awards-season course, Affleck won Best Director at the BAFTAs as well, though he didn’t top Spielberg for the honor; Spielberg was not nominated in the category. (Michael Haneke, Quentin Tarantino, Ang lee and Kathryn Bigelow were.)

Beyond Affleck and “Argo,” the BAFTAs also honored Oscar favorites Daniel Day-Lewis (for “Lincoln”) and Anne Hathaway (for “Les Miserables”) in, respectively, the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories. Christoph Waltz won the BAFTA award for Best Supporting Actor. Waltz, who also won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, is nominated for an Oscar alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tommy Lee Jones, Alan Arkin and Robert De Niro. (“Skyfall” star Javier Bardem replaced De Niro on the BAFTA list of supporting actor nominees.)

San Francisco Giants Fanfest 2013 (PHOTOS)

Tens of thousands of sports fans crowded AT&T Park to catch a glimpse of the boys in black and orange at the annual San Francisco Giants Fanfest on Saturday.

Hosted by KNBR, the event offered interviews with the players, photo opportunities with the World Series trophies and a much-needed silver lining for a town still recovering from last weekend’s Super Bowl disappointment.

While players talked about the upcoming spring training, last year’s World Series and plans for the 2013 season, the topic of the day was undoubtedly Tim Lincecum’s new haircut.
