Best Cities For Women To Work: Where Women Earn The Most

Frustrated with your salary? The issue might not be your job — it could be your city.

This week, Forbes released its list of the 20 best-paying cities for women. Using data from the 2011 Census, the magazine tracked the median annual earnings of full-time male and female employees in over 500 U.S. metropolitan areas. The results showed that, even in locations where women made the most money, gender parity was rare. Jenna Goudreau of Forbes concluded: “Out of all the cities tracked, there are only four in which women earn equal to or more than men: Key West, Fla; Madera, Calif.; Fort Payne, Ala.; and Sebring, Fla.”

American women still make 77 cents on each dollar earned by their male counterparts. According to the American Association of University Women (AAUW), this wage gap starts right after college graduation, and despite the fact that millennials are more likely to ask for raises, the gap increases with age. AAUW researchers concluded that the wage gap results from “a combination of women choosing lower-paying fields, lingering gender discrimination and differences in salary negotiations.”

Christopher Dorner Court And Police Records Show Ex-Cop Murder Suspect Was Sensitive, Disturbed

ORANGE, Calif. — A photo never tells the whole story, and that’s especially true for Christopher Dorner. The images on his Facebook page are essentially the same: Dorner, smiling, seemingly loving life and all it offers.

But they accompany a rambling document where he portrays himself as a real-life Rambo, an expert in weapons, explosives and military tactics who will stop at nothing to avenge his 2008 firing from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Microsoft Surface Pro available now in the US and Canada

Right on schedule, Microsoft’s Surface Pro is now available to purchase for prospective buyers in the US and Canada. The new tablet was going to be the main event at a special midnight launch event in New York City, but that ended up being cancelled due to the snowstorm. However, the Surface Pro still launched as planned, and consumers can now get their grubby hands on the Surface RT’s successor.

together-580x3261

The new tablet starts at $899 for the 64GB model and goes up to $999 for the 128GB variant. Both versions use Intel’s Core i5 processor and integrated HD 4000 graphics. There’s also 4GB of dual-channel memory, and a 10.6-inch Clear Type display on top, which features a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080. The screen also supports both 10-point multitouch and digital inking thanks to the special stylus.

The 42Wh battery has been one of the big talking points for the new tablet, however. We averaged about five hours, and sometimes even six hours during some occasions. Obviously, for a tablet, this isn’t quite what people were expecting, but Microsoft is hinting at some kind of battery add-on, which means users may soon be able to bump up the battery life a bit.

Of course, you can read our full review of Surface Pro to get a better idea of what you’ll be in for, but if you’re set to buy one right now, you can get one at any Microsoft Store in the US or Canada, as well as Staples and Best Buy in the US, and Best Buy and Future Shop in Canada. And of course, the tablet will also be available online.

8 Companies Ruined By Their Founders: 24/7 Wall St.

24/7 Wall St.: For every Sergey Brin, there is a Michael Dell. While the Google co-founder and CEO has made his company one of the most valuable in the world with its shares reaching an all-time high, Dell has laid waste to his company.

Dell and financial supporters offered to buy the company for $13.65 a share, 40% lower than what it was when Dell retook the CEO job in early 2007. Investors who bought shares a year ago have taken a haircut of more than 20%. Dell is not alone in his failure. He belongs to a group of founders of large public companies that showed great promise for a time, and then were wrecked by poor decisions, serious legal problems, and lack of innovation.

Arthur Reeves, Broward Sheriff’s Deputy, Carjacked By Armed Robbers On Florida Turnpike (VIDEO)

MIRAMAR — Broward Sheriff’s deputy Arthur Reeves thought he was going to die when a shaky, masked carjacker held a weapon to his head in a predawn holdup Friday on the side of Florida’s Turnpike.

Reeves, 32, thought maybe the red and blue lights that flashed in the mirrors of his Chevrolet Suburban — legally used only by police and firefighters in Florida — meant Florida Highway Patrol was attempting to slow him down on his way home to Miramar.

Not until he stopped his SUV and the robbers approached from a red Volvo sedan did he realize the danger he faced.

AOL dial-up business brings in $174 million in Q4

AOL reported its Q4 2012 quarterly earnings yesterday, and they revealed that the dial-up business is still alive and well, sadly. The company reported that during the quarter, they made $174.2 million for “subscription” services. This accounts for a whopping 29% of AOL’s total revenue for Q4 2012. If you ask us, that’s quite a huge chunk for services that should be obsolete by now.

Of course, revenue from subscribers is down 10% from the same time last year, in which AOL was raking in almost $200 million from dial-up customers, but their revenue saw a 4% growth from last year as well, proving that the company is slowly starting to see its dial-up business cut back a bit, and is earning more revenue elsewhere.

Then again, we shouldn’t be too surprised. While broadband internet is now the norm, there are sadly still some people who don’t have access to it, namely those who live rural areas. Of course, they could get satellite internet, but it’s really expensive for the speeds you get, and most people just end up going with dial-up for the time being.

AOL ended the year with a total revenue of $2.2 billion, and an operating income of $1.2 billion ($68.2 million for the quarter). As far as net income, the company scored $35.7 million for the quarter, and $1.05 billion for the fiscal year. It’s a little scary to hear that AOL’s revenue depended on subscriptions for 29% of it, but advertising made up a whopping 68% of their revenue, so they probably don’t have anything to worry about.

Watch These Lasers Print a Microscopic Spaceship In Under a Minute

Building a spaceship generally isn’t something you do on a whim. But that’s not quite the case with this tiny one, which can be fully printed by lasers in under a minute. Using mirrors and—fittingly—lasers, the laser lithography system flashes laser power to solidify piles of powdered polymer into a pretty sweet little model of the Hellcat from Wing Commander. I want one for my desk. And a microscope to admire it. [Nanoscibe via DVICE] More »

We Likey: Woman Finds Biological Mother, Thanks to Facebook Shares and ‘Likes’

There are a lot of things you can do with Facebook: make new friends, re-connect with old acquaintances, meet your match, and even find your biological parents.

That last one seems to be a bit out there, but it’s something that Jenessa Simons of Salt Lake City actually did through Facebook.

Utah Facebook LikeOf course, there’s no guarantee it’ll work, and you might even elicit some bogus responses from online pranksters, but what Jenessa did just goes to show Facebook’s seemingly boundless reach.

What Jenessa did was take a picture of herself beside a sign, where she wrote down information about her birth and about her parents. She then posted it on Facebook and asked people to Like and Share her post. Jenessa published her photo at the end of 2012, and things just took off from there.

As a result of her photo being shared over 100,000 times, Jenesse has been contacted by a woman who claims to be her biological mother. Here’s to hoping that it’s her actual mom.

prizm glassesIf you’re looking to be more productive while lying down, a new pair of Prizm Glasses may be the answer. But they’re not for everyone. You’ll need imagination and a stiff neck if you’re to avoid the fate of Martin Warburton, who hasn’t been upright since he first put them on.
