The Landsat program has revolutionized how we view the Earth during its forty continuous years of operation. The reams of data generated by seven generations of satellites has helped govern both public and private policies from agriculture and forestry management to cartography, geology, and urban planning. The eighth iteration of Landsat is slated for launch next week and is expected to deliver more detailed data than ever. More »
Apple’s ‘Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.04’ is out, and although we rarely report on these frequent releases, there are a few notable shooters named in this particular version. Available for Macs running OS X Lion 10.7.5 and above, or Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and above, the update now allows RAW snaps from Sony’s compact Cyber-shot RX1 and Nikon’s D5200 SLR to play nice with Aperture and iPhoto software. Plenty of other cameras are also on the changelog: Leica’s X2, V-Lux 4 and D-Lux 6, as well as Pentax’s Q, K-30, K-5 II and IIs. A quick trip to the App Store will get you on the latest version and have you cooking something up in Aperture before you can say “medium-rare.” Bon appétit.

Ebooks are pretty fantastic. Granted, there’s nothing better than reading an actual, physical book, but being able to squeeze a handful of books on an reader or tablet is a good deal. However, the problem with ebooks is the same problem with digital gaming distribution services, where you can sell your copy once you’re done with it. However, Amazon filed for a patent that hints at the possibility that the online retailer may start up a used ebook marketplace.
The patent in question here covers a technology that’s used to power an “electronic marketplace for used digital objects.” Essentially, it would take Amazon’s Kindle marketplace to the next level, and would cater towards those looking for second-hand goods, even though they’re digital copies. Basically, it could change the way how we buy ebooks.
At the moment, users simply can’t just buy an ebook and own it outright, doing whatever they want with it, and we doubt that Amazon would give that up, so the patent basically means that Amazon could still own the rights to the ebook, but they would let users resell the ebook in a controlled marketplace specifically for used ebooks.
The concept at first sounds pretty silly, and the thought of selling a digital object for less than what you bought it for may sound weird, especially since there’s nothing that would depreciate the price, but we could see users easily take a slight loss just to get their ebooks out of their hands and onto another reader. Of course, we’re keeping the salt nearby since a lot of patents usually never see the light of day, but it’s a concept at least worth thinking about.

This is, without a doubt, the best photo of NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity. Taken on a Martian flat spot called John Klein, the image was just published by scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It looks she asked someone passing by to take her camera and shoot the picture. More »
Once you lay eyes on the adorable and huggable-looking Mocoro floor cleaning bot, all of a sudden your Roomba, with its hard plastic housing, will start to look like a cold, calculating, dust-busting Terminator. How could anyone not fall in love with this autonomous rolling duster that looks like a cross between McDonald’s old Fry Guys and a tribble? More »
I know that many female Doctor Who fans would love to snuggle up with Matt Smith, the 11th Doctor. But since he’s probably never going to show up in your home, here is the next best thing. A plush pillow that looks just like him.
This 14″ x 11″ pillow wears no fez, but he does have the bow tie and the rest of his “cool” outfit. It is handmade from top quality fabrics like anti-pill fleece, allergen-free fiber-fill and eco-friendly felt. It’s all stitched, no glue or anything like that. The Doctor would surely approve.
You can find it at telahmarie’s Etsy store for just $30 (USD), where you can also find the 4th Doctor and various other geeky pillows.
After over three months, Windows Phone finally has a Spotify app again. The app just went up in the Store, and is rolling out as a beta. You might have to wait a bit for it to show up. More »
It’s true, folks: Spotify is finally available as a free download on Windows Phone 8, which should come as a happy surprise for users who have been sorely missing the perks of the music streaming service on their brand new devices. Until now, the app was only available for legacy Windows Phone users, but it’s finally made its way to WP8. If you don’t see it available in your phone’s store, hang on for a few hours; the app just barely started rolling out, so it may take a little while to reach everyone.

In what will be the first-ever Google+ Hangout to beam to the ISS, NASA will be hosting such an event on February 22, where astronauts Kevin Ford, Tom Marshburn, and Chris Hadfield will be answering your questions from 11 am ET to noon ET. The team will answer questions that are both pre-recorded, as well as live questions from social media sites.
The pre-recorded questions will come from users who submit video questions through YouTube. Users will have until February 12 to upload a YouTube video that’s 30 seconds long at most, and it must be tagged with #askAstro. The same goes for questions on Twitter and Google+, while a separate Facebook page will be available on February 22.
The Hangout will be available on NASA’s official Google+ page, so be sure to bookmark it for February 22 at 11 am ET. It’s not said how long the Hangout will last, but based on past Hangouts with officials and such, it’ll probably be around one hour to two hours, which should allow for plenty of questions that I’m sure space nuts are excited to hear the answers to.
In the past, Google+ Hangouts have been a popular tool for communicating with government officials, including President Obama and Vice President Biden, both of which hosted Google+ Hangouts in the past to answer questions from citizens. As time goes on, we should see Hangouts become a more popular platform for such uses, and maybe even become the standard for Q&A sessions with various celebrities.
