Strand-1 Satellite Controlled By Nexus One

Strand 1 Satellite Controlled By Nexus OneWhen the word “satellite” is mentioned, what comes across your mind? Most folks would think of something large and unwieldy, full of mechanical bolts and nuts that only a rocket scientist can understand. Others would think of Soundwave from the Transformers movie, but the Strand-1 satellite here is touted to be the real deal. Seriously, it was announced a couple of years back, and is finally on course for takeoff later this month. Specially developed by Britain’s Surrey Satellite Technology Limited and the Surrey Space Centre, the Strand-1 is not large by satellite standards, and holds the distinction of being the world’s first smartphone satellite that has been housed around the chassis of a Google Nexus One handset.

The moment it hits orbit, the satellite will make use of specially developed apps in order to pick up scientific data. Apart from data collection, the researchers will make use of the Strand-1’s 5-megapixel camera in order to shoot images of the Earth and Moon. The first phase of the satellite’s operation will be controlled using a Linux operating system, but in phase two, things are set to change, with the satellite’s controls being transferred over to the handset’s Android operating system, which will be operated remotely from a control station at the University of Surrey.

Miami Hurricanes Drug Testing: No Athletes Positive For Steroids, University Says

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — None of the past 10,000 drug tests performed on student-athletes at Miami has shown a positive result for anabolic steroids, university officials said Thursday night.

The statement comes amid reports that the Hurricanes’ baseball program has been linked to a Major League Baseball investigation into performance-enhancing drug use and if they got those products from an anti-aging clinic in South Florida.

Adobe rolls out security updates for Flash player

Adobe has rolled out its latest security updates for Flash Player that are said to concern issues resulting in possible crashes and leave the computer vulnerable to attackers. The update is for Windows, OS X, Linux, and Android, with the company recommending that all users update Flash as soon as possible. This is the latest move in addressing growing concerns with exploits and vulnerabilities that have been cropping up.

flash logo

The security updates are for Flash Player version 11.5.502.146 and earlier for Windows and OS X, and version 11.2.202.261 and earlier for Linux. The Android security update is for version 11.1.111.31, and is for Android versions 3.x and 2.x. All of the updates take care of security vulnerabilities leaving the various systems open to attack.

This follows reports that CVE-2013-0633 is being actively exploited in the wild in an attack that tricks users into downloading and opening a Word doc included as an email attachment. The file contains harmful Flash content, and is specific to Windows users running ActiveX. Those who download the security update won’t have to worry about this.

Likewise, reports have also rolled in showing that CVE-2013-0634 is also being exploited, this one via malicious Flash content found on websites. The content specifically targets Flash in Safari and Firefox for Mac users. The same is also used to exploit Windows users via the tainted Word doc attached to an email.

TiVo Mini DVR extender launches on Suddenlink, gets rental pricing

TiVo Mini DVR extender launches on Suddenlink, gets rental pricing

The TiVo Mini has yet to make its retail debut, but cable provider Suddenlink is now serving up the DVR extender for use with its own services. According to Zatz Not Funny, the outfit is pricing rentals of the boxes between $6 and $12 depending on a customer’s location, and presumably their service package as well. That rental fee nabs users the privilege of slinging live TV from a TiVo Premiere DVR on their network to another television set, in addition to searching for and watching recorded shows. While dynamic tuner allocation is on the hardware’s roadmap, it doesn’t appear to be switched on just yet. Waiting to pick up the hardware from retail shelves rather than take Suddenlink up on its offer? TiVo’s pint-sized offering is slated to ship this spring.

LG Optimus 4X HD, Optimus L7 And L9 To Get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

LG Optimus 4X HD, Optimus L7 And L9 To Get Android 4.1 Jelly BeanIf you are always on the lookout for news of your Android-powered smartphone receiving the latest version of the Android operating system, then it is time for folks who rock on to the LG Optimus 4X HD, LG Optimus L9 and LG Optimus L7 to perform a little jig upon hearing this news. It seems that the awaited Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will be making its way to those devices sometime in the first half of this year, based on a roughly translated Chinese page.

It is rather unfortunate that no further information on the situation has been shared, and LG has had a rather poor track record when it comes to updating their smartphones to the latest version of the Android operating system. Still, the adage of “better late than never” holds true here, and if you are one who likes to view the glass as half full, why not see it as better this year than in 2014, when most probably Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie would have been announced for half a year already by then at the very minimum?

Tim Thomas Traded: Bruins Deal Suspended Goalie To Islanders

NEW YORK — Veteran goalie Tim Thomas, who has said he won’t play this season, was traded by the Boston Bruins to the New York Islanders on Thursday for a conditional second-round draft choice either next year or in 2015.

Thomas chose to take this season off following the NHL lockout and was suspended by the Bruins after he didn’t report to training camp last month. The 38-year-old goalie is in the final season of a four-year deal that counts for $5 million against the salary cap.

BlackBerry Sales To Cease In Japan

BlackBerry Sales To Cease In JapanSometimes when it comes to winning a war, a battle must be lost as one consolidates one’s power base elsewhere. BlackBerry has certainly taken heed of such a strategy, where the Nikkei news agency has recently reported that BlackBerry as a corporation is unable to justify the expense of converting its new BlackBerry 10 operating system into the Japanese language simply because there isn’t a large enough user base to do so, which means Canada-based BlackBerry will be pulling out of the Japan market, and will put a stop to the sales of their smartphones in the Land of the Rising Sun.

I guess it makes plenty of business sense, and shareholders should be happy too, as BlackBerry has been reported to smash company records with figures of strong sales of the BlackBerry Z10 all-touch smartphone in the U.K. and Canada. A measly 0.3% smartphone market share in Japan is not going to cut the mustard, which is a far cry from the 5% that they held during the RIM’s heydays.

Full Asus Fonepad Specs LeakedYes, the Asus Fonepad has gotten under the limelight in recent memory, first being called the K004, followed by the possibility of it being announced at the upcoming Mobile World Congress event that is set to happen at the end of this month in Barcelona, Spain. Rumors of an Intel processor powering the Asus Fonepad has been confirmed with new information from, of all places, Bulgaria, as full specifications of the Fonepad was released, with a shot that you see on the right depicting the lower segment of its back. You will be able to see the all too familiar ‘Intel Inside’ logo.

As for the rest of its hardware specifications, we are looking at a 7-inch 1,280×800 IPS touchscreen display, a 1.2GHz Intel Z2420 processor with PowerVR SGX540 graphics, a 3-megapixel shooter at the back, a front-facing 1.2-megapixel camera, 1GB RAM, a choice of 8GB, 16GB or 32GB internal memory, a microSD memory card slot, and a beefy 4,270mAh battery to kep it going, with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice. Expect the Asus Fonepad to go on sale sometime in the second quarter of this year.

Galaxy S2 In Korea Gets Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Update

Galaxy S2 In Korea Gets Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Update Hmmm, first our friends living in the Great White North received the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update for their Galaxy Note 2, and here we are with word that the very same update will be hitting the Korean version of the Galaxy S2, also known as SHW-M250K if model numbers are your cup of tea.

For starters, here is a little bit of history for those who are interested. The Galaxy S2 holds the record of being the best-selling Android-powered device in the year 2011, and needless to say, it has its fair share of users who have yet to make the upgrade to a newer handset (which Samsung would naturally hope they make the jump to the Galaxy S3), which is why Samsung has continued to offer updates for the Galaxy S2 with each new Android iteration so that Galaxy S2 owners will be on the receiving end of the best support experience.

It is said that you are able to update your Galaxy S2 (SHW-M250K) via Samsung KIES, but do ensure that your handset has a full charge before doing so, as the entire update does seem to be rather large in size. After all, it is always better to err on the side of caution.

Samsung Galaxy S4 To Be Introduced In Russia?

Samsung Galaxy S4 To Be Introduced In Russia?Hmmm, the Samsung Galaxy S3 was first announced officially to the masses in London last year at the Galaxy S3 Unpacked event in 2012, and for next year’s edition, there is a possibility that Samsung Unpacked will kick off in chilly Moscow, Russia. It is said that there is a possibility of the Samsung Unpacked event happening alongside Sochi 2014, which is where the Olympic Winter Games will be held in Russia.

It was not too long ago that Samsung announced a sponsoring partnership with Sochi 2014, and since 2014 is a long way off (relatively speaking, of course, when it comes to the world of tech), but anything remains possible. It was leaked recently that Samsung Unpacked date will be held on March 15. Well, I think that the Galaxy S4 will be released this year, as it would be out of character for Samsung not to refresh their flagship smartphone annually, and the Galaxy S5 should see action in Russia instead. What do you think?
