Star Wars Jewelry Made from Toys: Use the Toys, Luke!

Check out this awesome snowspeeder ring. It was made from a toy and it looks pretty darn good on a finger. Star Wars fanatic Jennifer Landa of  Rockets and Rainbows has a nice selection of vintage toys that she’s converted into jewelry.

It looks like this snowspeeder is the only ring available right now, but Jennifer has plenty of earrings, necklaces, and other Star Wars jewelry. There’s even a Boushh locket with both Princess Leia and a frozen Han Solo inside.

I also like the Jawa locket with an actual Jawa inside and a Tatooine scene.

These pieces make a great gift for your geek friends and significant others. We all love Star Wars – plus, you can’t beat Micro Machines being turned into jewelry.

Mercury May Have Once Had a Lava Ocean

Researchers have been poring over data captured by the NASA Messenger probe as it conducted its study of Mercury. Amongst the data the probe discovered about the incredibly hot and small planet, were some tidbits about the composition of the surface of Mercury that left scientists curious. While studying the data, the scientists discovered that Mercury is comprised of two considerably different types of rock.

This discovery led MIT scientists to create an experiment in the lab to help identify a geological process that could have resulted in these two vastly different types of rock. The experiment subjected the rock types to different temperatures and pressures in an effort to simulate the processes that could have occurred on the surface of Mercury. The results of that experiment have led the scientists to believe that Mercury may have once had a massive ocean of piping hot magma on its surface that would have made Dr. Evil proud.

The scientists believe that the magma ocean existed sometime within the first 10 million years of Mercury’s existence, near the beginning of the formation of our solar system. The scientists estimate that the magma ocean would’ve existed over 4 billion years ago. Ancient Mercury sounds a lot like Mustafar, the planet where Anakin burst into flames on his path to becoming Darth Vader.

How To Decide Whether To Relocate In Retirement

Retirement can be a time to sit back and settle into a place you already know well. With your newfound free time you can better enjoy the already familiar surroundings of your neighborhood. Retirement gives you an opportunity to really savor what you have, and appreciate all of the little things that you might have taken for granted. If you have all you want in your current location, what could be better?

But some people see retirement as an excellent opportunity to try something new. They long to explore new things and experience different surroundings. After spending a significant portion of their lives in the same place, retirement offers the opportunity to live somewhere else. Perhaps you could move somewhere with four clearly-defined seasons that each bring something new. Or, if you have had it with the snow, you could find a place with moderate temperatures where the sun always shines. If thoughts of a change in latitude make you happy, retirement is your chance to do it.

When selecting a new place to retire, here are some things to look for:

7 Foods That Reduce Your Alzheimer’s Risk

SPECIAL FROM Grandparents.com

Keep Your Brain Healthy

The best thing you can do to keep your brain working the way you want it to: exercise, and eat right. “Nutrition is very, very important to brain health,” says Paul Nussbaum, Ph.D., a clinical neuropsychologist and member of scientific advisory board for the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. “Surprisingly, the brain is made up of 60% fat–it’s the fattest part of our body–and that fat insulates the nerve tracks. Without that fat we slow down mentally,” Dr. Nussbaum says.

Chromebook Pixel allows for custom bootloaders, is Linux-friendly

Chromebook Pixel allows for custom bootloaders, is Linux friendly

WiFi-only flavors of the Chromebook Pixel have only just started shipping, but if you’re already itching to install Linux on one of them, you’re in luck. Not only have kernel patches been submitted for the hardware, but Google’s Bill Richardson has now laid out exactly how to load up the devices with Linux Mint. Richardson says that part of the Chrome OS BIOS is read-only, so changes to it are generally exclusive to new hardware. Pixel, for example, has been tuned to support user-provided custom bootloaders thanks to an unverified BIOS slot. Unfortunately, Mint doesn’t support the laptop’s touchscreen and trackpad because it leverages the stock kernel. Adventurous types looking to boot a Tux-powered OS on a Pixel can hit the neighboring source link for step-by-step instructions.

7 Cheap, All-Day Activities For Grandkids

Celebrate Explorers Day

Take your grandkids on a subway car or commuter rail to the end of a line they’ve never reached before, hop off, grab lunch, and explore. Alternate idea: You can make an annual tradition of trying out new ways to get from here to there. Ride on a tram or monorail. Circle the city in a horse-drawn carriage or pedicab. Traverse the water in a ferry or paddleboat. Or consider jumping in go-carts, riding horses, or taking a helicopter or hot-air balloon tour.
