Pwnie Express-made security tools like the Power Pwn have mostly been stationary creatures that aren’t much help when checking for network vulnerabilities on the move. There’s now a more mobile version, though, in the Pwn Pad. The kit combines a Nexus 7 with USB-based Bluetooth, Ethernet and WiFi to gauge the security of a network beyond what Google’s tablet can manage on its own. Ubuntu Linux is available in the Pwn Pad’s software loadout, but part of the appeal comes from running a suite of tools in Android that aren’t always available on the platform, such as Kismet. The $795 price will seem steep to those who bought the plain Nexus 7 at a quarter of the price, although it might end up being a discount for security gurus who want to leave bulkier tools — even their laptops — at home.

Wayne Besen: Robbie Rogers’ Coming Out Doesn’t Mean He Should Quit Pro Soccer
Posted in: Today's Chili If soccer really gave him such incredible joy, there is no reason that he can’t discover himself while still on the team. Presumably, they will allow him to visit gay bars and join LGBT political organizations after practice is over, so I don’t really see the conflict.

Another day, another company announcing that it was attacked. So goes it for Microsoft, which has confirmed shortly after Facebook and Apple were attacked that it likewise was targeted. The information comes from the Microsoft Security Response Center team over on TechNet, which says that it did not make this information known sooner because it was gathering data about the attack.
Microsoft says that the attacks were similar to those experienced by Facebook and Apple. While investigating the issue, Microsoft found that “a small number” of computers, which it says included some in its Mac business unit, had been infected by malware. The investigation is still underway, but thus far the company reports that it doesn’t appear customer information was messed with.
Microsoft says that the attack does not surprise it, with such activities being a common occurrence, something it is forced to deal with frequently. Because of this, the company says that it regularly re-evaluates its security, taking on additional personnel, processes, and technology when needed to keep such cyberattacks at bay.
This week and last, both Facebook and Apple were targeted by a zero-day Java exploit, with Facebook saying that no customer information was compromised, and with Apple reporting that a “small number” of computers had been affected. Twitter was also attacked not too long ago, announcing that as many as 250,000 accounts could have been compromised.

WASHINGTON, Feb 22 (Reuters) – The Pentagon has deployed about 100 troops to the West African nation of Niger to conduct unmanned reconnaissance flights over Mali and share intelligence with French forces fighting al Qaeda-affiliated militants, President Barack Obama told Congress on Friday.
Obama, in a letter to congressional leaders, said the last 40 of the approximately 100 military personnel had arrived in Niger on Wednesday and were “deployed with weapons for the purpose of providing their own force protection and security.”
“This deployment will provide support for intelligence collection and will also facilitate intelligence sharing with French forces conducting operations in Mali, and with other partners in the region,” the president said.
The United States and Niger signed a Status of Forces Agreement last month that governs the presence of American troops in the country, paving the way for sending unarmed drones and military personnel.
A Pentagon official said U.S. Africa Command, which handles military ties with Africa, had sent the unmanned planes to Niger “to support a range of regional security missions and engagements with partner nations.”
“This effort is designed to promote regional stability in support of U.S. diplomacy and national security and to strengthen relationships with regional leaders committed to security and prosperity,” the official said on condition of anonymity.
France intervened in Mali, which borders Niger, last month as Islamist forces, who seized control of the north in the confusion following a military coup in March 2012, pushed towards the capital Bamako.
That lifted Mali to the forefront of U.S. and European security concerns, with fears the Islamists would turn the country into a base for international attacks.
The United States already has drones and surveillance aircraft stationed at several points around Africa. Its only permanent military base is in the small country of Djibouti in the Horn of Africa, more than 3,000 miles (4,828 km) from Mali.
Niger gave permission for U.S. surveillance drones to be stationed on its territory to improve intelligence on al Qaeda-linked Islamist fighters in northern Mali and the wider Sahara, a senior Niger government source said in January. As silly as it may be, there are unwritten rules of Instagram. Don’t cheat and use pictures you took with your DSLR. Don’t post too many pictures of food. Don’t hashtag bomb every single picture. Don’t take it too seriously. Etcetera, etcetera. But you can totally imagine celebrities on their last minute of fame breaking every single one of those rules. Just like this hilarious episode of Very Mary Kate by College Humor that pokes fun of Mary Kate Olsen for having a whole crew and writing team figuring out her every Instagram. More »

On Monday, we reported on the Nokia Lumia 520 and Lumia 720, respectively known as the Fame and Zeal. They both appeared in log files over at AdDuplex and in earlier leaks, with the information being tweeted by Alan Mendelevich, who reported on seeing some additional Nokia devices earlier today. Now the ever-faithful @EVLeaks has released two images purported to be of the Lumia 520 and 720, which you can see after the jump.
The image featured above is said to be the Lumia 720, the number of which you can see in the upper-right hand corner of the pictured device. According to past leaks, the handset is said to feature a large 4.3-inch display, as well as a 1GHz dual-core processor and 512MB of RAM. Users will have a decent 8GB of internal storage space, as well as a 6-megapixel camera on the back and a 2-megapixel camera on the front.
This second picture is said to be of the Lumia 520; as with the other image, you can see the device’s number in the upper right corner of the pictured device. This handset has lower-end specs than the 720, with a reported 4-inch display, as well as a 1GHz dual-core processor and 512MB of RAM. Internal storage space is also the same with 8GB, but the rear camera is smaller at 5-megapixels and there is reportedly no front camera.
Other devices that were mentioned by Mendelevich earlier this week and today include a Lumia RM-914, which is the 520, the RM-885, which is the 720, as well as an RM-887 and 860, the latter of which may be a Lumia 920. Also spotted was an RM-892 from India, and a RX-108, which is a Windows 8 device that could be the long-rumored tablet many would like to see from the company.

When HTC dissolved Dashwire’s original service just months after acquisition, many wrote off the smaller company; it all but disappeared from the limelight, even with its early cloud sync service still in action. Rather than relegate Dashwire to the oblivion traditionally associated with takeovers, though, HTC is staging a comeback. It’s relaunching Dashwire to help carriers get customers up and running on a new smartphone, including contacts and a customized look. Details are short, but the revived service won’t be HTC-exclusive: Dashwire will support “leading” Android device makers. While the company’s return to form will depend on successful sales pitches at Mobile World Congress, it at least stands a chance of being more than just a footnote.
