Leaks Reportedly Detail More Of HTC’s 2013 Android Line, Peg M7 For Release Soon After Unveiling

HTC is set to show off something at a special press event in NYC on February 19 (the day before Sony’s, it turns out), and it’s quite likely that the company will debut its rumored new flagship phone, the M7. And now new leaks from the generally dependable Evleaks suggest the company has a multi-device lineup planned to follow the M7 with retail availability in Spring.

The two phones detailed by Evleaks on UnwiredView suggest that HTC will follow-up the M7 with a device with slightly more moderate specs, akin to how the One S was designed to complement the One X last year. And there will also be a down-market device, called the G2, that will be 2013′s equivalent to the HTC Desire C.

The M4 will reportedly pack a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, with a 4.3-inch 720 p display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage and a 13 megapixel rear camera. It’ll have a fairly limited 1500 mAh battery (but fewer pixels to push compared to the M7), and should run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

The HTC G2 (which is unrelated to the previous HTC phone of the same name) will have a 1.0GHz ARM Cortex processor with 512MB of RAM, a 3.5-inch HVGA (480 x 320) display, with a 5 megapixel rear camera and no front shooter, a 1400 mAh battery and Android Ice Cream Sandwich as its operating system.

Once again, HTC looks set to deliver a trio of solid Android handsets designed for various consumer budgets, but I am a little concerned that this won’t be different enough from the status quo to really excite consumers and propel sales to higher than HTC’s rather disappointing performance overall in 2012. That said, it’s still very early to be judging these phones considering they haven’t even been made official yet, so maybe there’s more to HTC’s 2013 lineup than what’s apparent from the spec sheets.

GameStick Kickstarter campaign ends at $647,658

After 31 days of campaigning on Kickstarter, PlayJam (the company behind GameStick) has finished its final day and ended up with a total of just under $650,000 in contributions. The project actually surpassed its $100,000 goal in just two days, and edged past the $500,000 mark with just three days to go. In total, the project ended up with $647,658, over six times the initial goal.

The GameStick is expected to ship to all of its customers by April, and the company just got done making final revisions to the portable gaming console, making the controller a bit more rounded, and adding a microSD card slot to the HDMI dongle. If everything goes as planned, the company expects to ship out its first commercial run by next month.

If you’re still not familiar with GameStick, it’s essentially a game controller with an Android-powered gaming console that’s essentially a HDMI dongle. You plug the dongle into your HDTV and start gaming away. It’s novel concept, and its looking to take on the other Android-powered portable gaming console, the OUYA.

Furthermore, GameStick can also act as a media center of sorts, thanks to XBMC and DLNA support. It’ll be interesting to see how well the little dongle can handle 1080p HD video, but if it does, we’re looking at quite a game-changer for not just the portable gaming market, but also the media center business.

Outlook.com appears to be down, some users reporting an Office 365 service outage as well (update)

Well, happy Friday to you too, Microsoft. It appears that the company is wrapping up the week with an outage: Outlook.com appears to be down, and many users are reporting that the Office 365 subscription service is unavailable as well. From our vantage point, Outlook.com is indeed unable to load, although using the address “hotmail.com” seems to side-step the problem. As for Office 365, we’re having no issues with our service. We’ll reach out to Microsoft and let you know if or when the company comments. In the meantime, how’s service looking for you guys? Let us know in the comments.

Update: Microsoft confirmed the outage on its Office 365 Twitter account, saying the issue resulted from routine maintenance (a rep told us it was the result of a “networking adjustment,” specifically). Microsoft says service has since been restored.

Hands-on with Nikon’s Coolpix P520 and L820 superzooms at CP+ (video)

Handson with Nikon's Coolpix P520 and L820 superzooms at CP video

Nikon introduced a pair of step-up superzoom cameras here at CP+, with the P520 designed to meet the needs of advanced amateur shooters and the L820 best suited for casual photographers looking to get a bit closer to the action. Both models include BSI CMOS sensors, with the $450 P520 snapping 18.1-megapixel stills and the $280 L820 capturing 16 megapixels. That first model includes a 42x (24-1,000mm) optical zoom lens while the latter sports a 30x (22.5-675mm) optic — both offer lens-based image stabilization. Both options feature lens-mounted zoom toggles, pop-up flashes and dedicated video capture buttons, but only the P520 offers a dedicated mode dial, and if you’re planning to make changes on the fly, that’s really a necessity.

We caught up with the duo at Nikon’s CP+ booth this week — we were expecting some inconsistency between the two based on price and specs alone, but after trying out both models, the Coolpix P520 is far and above the better option. The VGA-resolution 3.2-inch display was incredibly sharp and bright, and the vari-angle functionality lets you snap overhead and below-eye-level shots with ease. The camera was very responsive and the housing felt quite durable — you definitely get quite a bit for your 450 bucks. The L820, on the other hand, felt very much like a low-end alternative, so unless you’re on a strict budget or in the market for a sub-$300 model, you’ll want to spend for the P520. You should be able to check out both cameras in retail stores beginning later this month, or you can take a look today in our hands-on after the break.

Iron Bounty Hunter: Is He Tony Fett or Boba Stark?

This Iron Man/Boba Fett sculpture is awesome. Matthew J. Hideousboi painted after seeing a Boba Fett helmet painted as Iron Man for the As You Wish Helmet Project, a charity event that raised funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, by getting artists to make their own custom Boba Fett and Clone Trooper helmets. Personally, I think that Matthew’s version is better.

I would love to see this guy in a movie. Maybe now that Disney owns both Marvel and LucasFilm, we will someday.

I had no idea the Stan Winston School of Character Arts even existed. If you dream about doing character design or special effects, you can become part of the whole process by subscribing to the school and getting step-by-step videos. Pretty soon you too will be making badass creatures and aliens for yourself.]

Apple now largest mobile phone manufacturer in US

Apple has gained the title of the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer in the US during Q4 2012. According to Strategy Analytics, Apple maintains 34% of the mobile phone market share, which gives the company the largest piece of the pie, beating out Samsung who has 32.3% of the market share for Q4 2012.

This move up to the top of the list marks the first time that Apple has taken the crown. The Cupertino-based company shipped an estimated 17.7 million phones in the fourth quarter, while Samsung shipped 16.8 million handsets. Third place went to LG, but with only a 9% market share, and shipments of 4.7 million units.

However, while Apple might have taken the fourth-quarter crown, Samsung ended up shipping more phones throughout the entire year of 2012, taking 31.8% of the market share, while Apple owned 26.2%. Again, LG came in third with a 12.4% share of the phone market. Samsung ended up shipping 53 million phones during 2012, while Apple shipped 43.7 million.

Strategy Analytics says that the release of the iPhone 5, as well as assistance from carriers helped Apple claim the US mobile market share title in Q4 2012. Previously, Samsung had worn the crown since 2008. The Korean company still had a good quarter, though. Its market share rose 5% from a year ago, and they made over $8 billion in pure profit last quarter as well.

Remember, kids: a sale and a deal are two entirely different things. More »
