Unlocked Blackberry Z10 Fetches Over $1,000 on eBay

Unlocked Blackberry Z10 Fetches Over $1,000 on eBayWe’re sure that many Blackberry fans around the world are eager to get their hands on the Z10, but unfortunately the handset has not been made available in every market just yet but if you can’t wait to get your hands on the device and your carrier of choice is neither Verizon nor Sprint, then perhaps you might be interested in picking up an unlocked version of the handset, which according to searches on eBay has yielded some devices which are commanding prices of over $1,000! While it’s hard to say if all these auctions are legitimate, it is safe to say that some are because Blackberry had issued several unlocked Z10s during launch events, and we guess some of the participants decided to be enterprising and auction off their devices rather than use it. That and the fact that the Z10 has already gone up for sale in the UK already increases the likelihood that some of these auctions are for real, but it’s still a smart move to exercise some caution nonetheless. So, what do you guys think? Anyone willing to drop over a grand just to get their hands on the Z10 ahead of the majority?

Nokia lands $1.35 billion grant for graphene development

When I think of research and scientific innovation, I don’t think of Nokia as a company who’s big into research. The fact is that Nokia is a major researcher into new technologies and processes for a variety of uses. Nokia has announced that it has received $1.35 billion grant to develop the strongest material ever tested.

graphene,0-K-370676-3

That material is graphene. Graphene is a 2-D structure that’s only one atom thick, yet it’s the strongest material ever produced being 300 times tougher than steel. The material is also one of the lightest conductors of electricity in existence making it highly appealing for use in electronic devices.

Nokia is a member of the Graphene Flagship Consortium that includes 73 other companies and academic institutions. The $1.35 billion grant that Nokia received is to be used for researching and development of graphene for practical applications. The grant money came from the European Union for the Future and Emerging Technologies.

Nokia research leader Jani Kivioja says that not only does the graphene research consortium open up the research possibilities for the material; it also creates new jobs in Europe. The researcher believes that its unlikely graphene will become a normal building material for various products, but he does expect that the material will be used to improve existing materials and products.

$1.35 billion grant for graphene development targets “strongest material ever”

Scientists have been talking up the potential of super-material graphene for years now, though dedicated efforts to actually exploit the material are only now really beginning to take off. Nokia has announced that the Graphene Flagship Consortium, of which it’s perhaps the best known member, has secured a $1.35 billion grant to help develop practical applications of graphene.

Apple Overtakes Samsung As Number One Mobile Phone Vendor In US (Q4/2012)

Apple Overtakes Samsung As Number One Mobile Phone Vendor In US (Q4/2012)When it comes to being the number one mobile phone vendor in the US, Samsung has been holding that position for the past five years, possibly because of their wide range of offerings that include feature phones to high-end Android smartphones like the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2. However it looks like Samsung’s run might have come to an end because according to a report by research firm, Strategy Analytics, it seems that Apple has finally overtaken Samsung as the number one mobile phone vendor in the US.

The report showed that Apple has managed to sell 17.7 million iPhones in Q4 2012, versus Samsung’s 16.8 million with LG trailing behind in third place at 4.7 million. Like we said earlier, these are not just smartphone figures, but rather mobile phones of all kinds which includes budget feature phones to the high-end smartphones, so it is particularly interesting as Apple only has the iPhone while both Samsung and LG have numerous other offerings. It is unclear if Apple will be able to hold onto the number spot for a sustained period of time, especially with Samsung poised to launch the Galaxy S4 later this year, but either way it’s still a victory for now.

Monster Hunter Nintendo 3DS XL Case Now Available For Pre-Order

Monster Hunter Nintendo 3DS XL Case Now Available For Pre OrderIf you’re a fan of Monster Hunter on the 3DS and you want to show your love of the game, Capcom has announced that the Monster Hunter themed 3DS XL cases are now available for pre-order! The case itself will be made from aluminum and according to Capcom, will be compatible Circle Pad Pro, although the caveat is that you will need to remove the bottom piece in order to do so. The 3DS XL version of the case was voted by gamers awhile back and we have to admit that compared to the original 3DS Monster Hunter case, the 3DS XL’s case looks much better especially with its bronze-ish finish. The case is available for pre-order via the Capcom Store for $19.95 and is expected to start shipping in March, and as Capcom notes, they do ship internationally so don’t worry if you’re not living in the US. So, who’s picking one up for themselves?

Canon EOS 70D Confirmed For The Future By Chief Executive

Canon EOS 70D Confirmed For The Future By Chief ExecutiveLast year we reported on a rumor that Canon could be unveiling the EOS 70D this year along with other cameras. Now the good news is that for fans of Canon’s mid-ranged DSLRs like the 50D and 60D is that it looks like the 70D is a possibility, and this was admitted by Canon’s Managing Director and Chief Executive, Masaya Maeda in an interview. When asked whether customers could look forward to a 70D camera in the future, Maeda answered in the positive, claiming that “someday in the future. Without fail.” Given that the rumor last year pegged the 70D’s release for 2013, hopefully that future will not be too far off. Unfortunately the specs of the 70D remain unknown at this point in time, but it is possible that the 70D might come with a full frame sensor instead of the APS-C found on the 60D. Maeda revealed that he does not believe that larger sensors are necessarily the way to go, such as the likes of the Sony RX100. That combined with the fact that full frame cameras like the 6D are starting to become slightly more affordable, a full frame 70D might not be completely out of the question – but what do you guys think?

Microsoft Surface Ultrabook Concept Looks Sleek

Microsoft Surface Ultrabook Concept Looks SleekThe Microsoft Surface is a Windows-based tablet that Microsoft introduced last year, but what if Microsoft decided to venture out and create an Ultrabook of their own? After all they did make their own tablet, and with rumors surrounding a Surface smartphone, an Ultrabook wouldn’t be out of the question, right? While it remains to be seen if Microsoft will ever venture into Ultrabook territory, designer Clément Puertolas has come up with a Surface Ultrabook concept of his own which basically marries the Surface’s touchscreen capabilities with an ultra-thin form factor, which according to his design, will be thinner than Apple’s MacBook Air.

At the moment there already exists hybrid devices that combine touchscreen displays into a laptop body, but Puertolas seems to think that these hybrids are both fragile, complicated and in some cases pretty thick. His answer to that problem would be his Ultrabook concept would be made by Microsoft and based on this concept, it looks pretty sleek and stylish. We’re not sure if Microsoft would ever decide to launch their own Ultrabook in the future, but what do you guys think? Based on the Surface, do you think Microsoft will do well?

Samsung Rumored To Be Testing New Update Service With The Galaxy S4

Samsung Rumored To Be Testing New Update Service With The Galaxy S4Sometimes some of us aren’t patient enough to wait for a particular phone to arrive to our market, so we resort to gray imports from other countries who already have the device. This is perfectly normal, although in some cases it can prove somewhat costly due to limited supply. However according to the folks at SamMobile who have heard a rumor, it seems that Samsung might be interested in cracking down on gray imports with new update services starting with the Samsung Galaxy S4. Basically Samsung is interested in retaining more control over the sales and updates of its products, and one of ways it plans to do that is to prevent retailers from shipping devices to other countries.
