HBO Go app coming to Apple TV by mid-year?

If you have an Apple TV set-top box attached to the TV in your living room, you may be getting a new entertainment option for the device by the middle of the year. Bloomberg reports that two people familiar with plans for Apple say that Apple and Time Warner Incorporated are negotiating to bring HBO Go to the Apple set-top box. The two sources refused to be named because the talks are private.

According to the sources, the timeframe for HBO Go to come to Apple TV is mid-2013. The Apple TV set-top box already has other streaming video applications such as Netflix and Hulu Plus available for video streaming. The Apple device can use more streaming video services to help it compete better with the PS3, Xbox 360, and cheaper set-top boxes from Roku.

If HBO Go does come to the Apple TV box by the middle of the year, you will need a subscription to HBO in order to use the app. The HBO Go app not only requires that you have a subscription to the HBO network on your cable or satellite company, but you must also be subscribing via participating cable company or satellite provider.

Apple continues to have a moderate success with the Apple TV set-top box selling more than 2 million units in the first quarter of its fiscal 2013 year. Apple’s fiscal Q1 2013 ended in December 2012. Two million units sold in the first quarter of the fiscal year is a definite improvement since it took to full fiscal years for Apple to reach 7.8 million units sold.

BT offers cloud storage service to broadband customers in the UK

Your BT broadband account now comes with one more perk to justify its existence: a locker service that takes a leaf out of AT&T’s book in offering online storage accessible via iOS and Android apps. How much you get depends on the value of your current contract, with an apparent minimum of 2GB and upgrade options extending up to 500GB. If your cloud needs aren’t already being catered for, hunt down those BT login details and then use the links below to activate the service and pick up the app. Think of it as a 2GB gift horse.

Nissan plans to triple available electric vehicle fast chargers in Washington DC

Despite the fact that the United States government is pushing hard for drivers to adopt electric vehicles and hybrids, most drivers are sticking with traditional automobiles. One of the big reasons that many drivers are staying away from electric vehicles is because the charging infrastructure in the United States is still very poor in most areas. That means that electric vehicle drivers are stuck operating their cars only within range of their home or offices where they can plug-in.

Nissan has announced it is teaming up with NRG Energy to try and triple the number of electric vehicle fast chargers in the Washington DC area. Nissan plans to install at least 500 quick charging stations in the area over the next 18 months. Nissan and its partners estimate that right now 160 fast chargers are available for public use across the United States.

Nissan says that there are no fast chargers available for public use in Washington DC. Adding more fast chargers in the Washington DC area will allow drivers to increase how much they drive their electric vehicles according to Nissan. Nissan plans to install fast chargers including a network of 40 eVgo Freedom Station sites across the city.

Each of those sites will have a Nissan fast charger able to provide EVs like the LEAF with an 80% charge in under 30 min, it’s unclear if the charters will support only Nissan EVs. Nissan says that it currently operates fast charger networks in Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and other locations around the country. Nissan’s plan will cost approximately $150 million.

Uber, other car-hailing apps now a-okay with California regulators

DNP Uber, other ridesharing apps, now aokay with California regulators

Uber and similar ride-hailing apps have had their run-ins against authorities before, but it looks like the town car service is finally getting a reprieve, at least in California. Last October, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency issued a cease and desist order plus a $20,000 citation to private car ventures like Uber, Lyft and Sidecar over an apparent lack of permits and licenses. However, the commission changed its tune in December when it decided to evaluate the safety of such services, and has now suspended those complaints altogether as it works toward a resolution. More over, the CPUC officially approved ridesharing — where the drivers are not specifically licensed to drive a limousine or a taxi — thus legitimizing Lyft and opening the door for others to offer such services in the future. The CPUC states it’ll still require “continued proof of insurance, Department of Motor Vehicle checks and national criminal background checks,” especially if the service uses “non-licensed charter party carriers.” Regardless, it’s still a victorious day for lazy smartphone-wielding commuters in the Golden State.

Chrysler unveils 2013 Mopar Dodge Dart

If I’m being honest, I’ve never found the Dodge Dart to be an appealing car. It lacks the performance I want to see in a sports car and the looks were boring enough that you can pretty much guarantee I pay no attention when I see them on the street. Chrysler has unveiled a new 2013 Mopar Dodge Dart that I do rather like.

CHRYSLER GROUP LLC MOPAR '13 DART

This will be a very limited edition vehicle with only 500 numbered units to be constructed at the assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois. Chrysler has promised more details the vehicle will go live today, but those details are missing as yet. What we do know is that the Mopar Dart will be customized with a number of Mopar performance parts and accessories.

In the teaser photo here, the car actually looks very good, I would totally drive that and that is the first time I can say that about a Dodge Dart. Dodge says that the Mopar Dart is designed for the driving enthusiast. The 500 vehicles will be powered by a 1.4-liter Multiair intercooled turbocharged engine with a manual transmission. The cars will all be offered in black with car length Mopar Blue stripes.

The vehicles get improved handling thanks to a performance steering gear calibration, suspension that is 7 mm lower than normal, and 225/40-R18 tires. The cars will also get a premium brake kit with slotted rotors, a performance tuned exhaust, and a Mopar ground effects kit. Inside the car will be custom Mopar Blue leather seating with black accents and a serialized badge on the dash. The car also gets wireless smartphone charging and an 8.4-inch navigation screen among other details. Pricing on these limited edition vehicles is unknown.

VESA unveils new Dual-Mode standard supporting 4K resolution and more

logoBlackVESA, the Video Electronics Standards Association, has announced that it has released an updated DisplayPort Dual-Mode standard. The new standard supports the next-generation of Dual-Mode DisplayPort enabling personal computers and cable adapters to support new functionality and resolutions. The updated standard allows for several refinements that improve interoperability including a higher data rate for DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable adapters.

That higher data rate means that the adapters can now support HDMI 1.4 resolutions including 1080p 3-D 60 Hz, Ultra HD at up to 30 Hz, and 1080p with deep color. The DisplayPort was created as one port to rule them all. The port can connect directly to displays that have DisplayPort connectivity.

However, the DisplayPort can also be used to power HDMI, VGA, and DVI displays using adapters. VESA has also updated the Dual-Mode Cable Adapter Compliance Test Specification version 1.1. Manufacturers are required to use that new test specification if they’re going to use the DisplayPort logo with a Dual-Mode cable adapter.

Before the Dual-Mode standard was offered, cable adapters using Dual-Mode were limited to a TMDS clock rate of 165 MHz. That rate supported resolutions of up to 1080p at 60 Hz and 24 bits of color. The new specification supports a clock rate of up to 300 MHz.

Strategy Analytics: Apple tops US phone market for Q4 2012, but Samsung takes the year

Strategy Analytics have shared the state of the global smartphone OS market, but today it’s focused specifically on the US, where the iPhone 5 helped Apple to reclaim the last quarter from Samsung. iPhone claimed 34 percent of vendor shipments in the last quarter, while Samsung’s smartphone range wasn’t far behind with 32.3 percent. Apple’s resurgence with its new smartphone couldn’t catch up with Samsung’s lead earlier in the year, however, with the Korean phone-maker commanding a 31.8 percent share of all smartphones shipped over the last 12 months. Apple was next with 26.2 percent, while LG came third with 12.3 percent of all phones sold.

The analytics firm reckons that 52 million devices were shipped in Q4, increasing just short of 2 million units since the same period last year. However, it also noted that annual sales in the US were actually less than in 2012 than in the preceding year, dropping just under 20 million units in the interim. Strategy Analytics pointed the finger at economic uncertainty and tougher carrier upgrade policies for the drop in shipments.

Mercedes says that this new edition of the C63 AMG utilizes a lot of the same technology as the incredibly expensive SLS AMG. The Edition 507 also has a high-performance braking system with red brake calipers standard.

The high-performance sports car will be available in the summer of 2013 and promises to hit 60 mph in only 4.1 seconds from standstill. The Edition 507 has a top speed increased to 174 mph and comes with Doctor for driver training session at the AMG Driving Academy. The vehicle will be offered in both sedan and coupe forms with identical performance. The car will offer three different equipment and options available on the inside varying from light leather with black trim to black leather with light trim. Mercedes says pricing for the vehicle will be announced closer to launch.
