HTC EVO 4G LTE Gets OTA Update, No Android 4.2 In Sight

HTC EVO 4G LTE Gets OTA Update, No Android 4.2 In SightHear ye, hear ye! If you happen to own the HTC EVO 4G LTE, then surely you must be on the lookout for the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update. The thing is, there is a new Over The Air (OTA) update that is set to roll out for the HTC EVO 4G LTE, but unfortunately for owners of the smartphone, it would bump up the software version number to 3.16.651.3, and that can only mean one thing – that there is no Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update to check out here. Still, we do know that most updates are more than welcome, as a general rule of thumb, these tend to patch up whatever bugs there are in the system, in addition to delivering a bunch of other improvements.

The 3.16.651.3 OTA update would weigh in at 44MB a pop, so you might want to hit a Wi-Fi network to get the downloading bit done instead of eating into your data plan. Some users who have already installed the update reported a bunch of improvements, including a better working proximity sensor, the camera shutter sound working as it should, and a better voicemail experience.

Mega Search Engine Blocked

Mega Search Engine BlockedIt looks like Kim Dotcom is never too far removed from the news, as his recently launched file sharing website that is known as Mega ended up resembling its previous “relative”, so to speak, which was known as Megaupload and has already closed down. It seems that anonymous users have already launched a search engine which will index the numerous files uploaded to Mega, and theoretically, this would make it a whole lot easier to look for copyright-protected material.

In fact, it was earlier today, where the third party search engine was blocked by Dotcom, taking under 24 hours to do so after its existence was first reported online. The search engine, known as Mega-Search.me, is no longer available online. There was a message in French that is located on its home page, where according to Google Translate, says, “Due to a script developed by Mega to delete all files indexed in Mega-search, the engine is temporarily unavailable. A solution to overcome this problem will be made shortly.”

Looks like the quick response showed by Mega underlines the seriousness that Dotcom never exhibited in the past in making sure that no copyrighted material are made available for the masses.

FTC’s Chairman Jon Leibowitz set to announce his departure Friday

In an interview earlier today, the FTC‘s Chairman Jon Leibowitz stated that he’ll formally announce his departure from the agency tomorrow. Leibowitz first joined the agency in 2004, eventually being dubbed Chairman in 2009. Whispers of his imminent departure have been circulating since last year, although nothing had been confirmed until today.

Potential candidates to take Leibowitz place include Howard Shelanski, who is the commission’s Director of the Bureau of Economics, lawyer Leslie Overton, Julie Brill, Edith Ramirez, and Philip Weiser. Because the commission is split with two Republicans and two Democrats while the transition takes place, some fear this partisan nature could have a negative impact on the agency.

Leibowitz has stated that such fears are not necessary, saying, “We [the FTC] have been a largely functional agency in an often-dysfunctional Washington. I think we have done our job the way we are supposed to, and in a consensus-driven way.” Still, not everyone shares his optimism, and some feel that what is likely to be a long process in getting a new commissioner will further compound the issue.

The FTC has been in the news quite a bit over the last several months, mostly in regards to the antitrust probe against Google that ultimately fizzled out into little more than a wrist slapping. In line with that, some have criticized Chairman Leibowitz as too ready to take settlements rather than go after companies. Still, Leibowitz’ stint as chairman has had its upsides, particularly in consumer protection.

$13,500 Bounty To Breach Mega

$13,500 Bounty To Breach MegaKim Dotcom has brashly put forward a $13,500 bounty that will be the reward for the first person who successfully breaks into his Mega system’s security. I guess that amount of cash will mean something to most people, but for someone of his stature and cash reserves, it surely does not reflect the kind of confidence (IMHO) in Mega’s security system, no? I wonder which enterprising hacker will walk away with the €10,000 bounty (which is roughly $13,500 after conversion), and from which country he/she is from.

This prize money was announced after Mega was criticized for its security procedures, and in a war of words, there was even a Mega blog post that pooh-poohed (some say valid) points which were raised by industry heavyweights such as Ars Technica and Forbes. At this point in time, Mega holds nearly 50 million files, which is a sizable achievement considering it was launched less than a fortnight ago. How soon do you think it will be before someone steps forward to claim the reward?

Nokia Lumia 620 Spotted In Video

The folks over at KnowYourMobile have taken a first look at the soon-to-come entry level Nokia Lumia 620 smartphone. Initial whispers on the street point out that the Nokia Lumia 620 will be making its way over to O2 in the UK at £149.99 a pop, and we have also reasonable grounds to believe that other networks in select countries in Europe too, will soon get hold of the Lumia 620, although important stuff like pricing details have yet to be determined.

You can enjoy a video of the Lumia 620 above, which does seem to fit into the overall scheme where functionality is concerned, and it has also been greatly aided by the Nokia’s app suite. Loud, brash, colorful, and also a decent mobile operating system running there, makes the Nokia Lumia 620 a decent entry level Windows Phone smartphone.

Sharp manages an operating profit in Q3, but forecast remains cloudy

Sharp manages an operating profit in Q3, but forecast remains cloudy

It’s been a while since we had any good financial news for Sharp, so we’ll start there. On an operating basis, Reuters and Nikkei report it managed to turn a profit for the October to December quarter of 2.6 billion yen ($28.5 million) — more than analysts had predicted — despite still recording a net loss of $398 million. That’s not so bad when you consider the massive losses of a year ago, although questions raised last fall about the company’s viability still remain. We’ll see if a slew of new devices and partnership with Qualcomm are what the doctor ordered — hopefully the #1 manufacturer of 60-inch and above HDTVs in 2012 can continue on long enough to put its 8K Super Hi-Vision TV in our living rooms.

MeCam Drone Records Memories For You

MeCam Drone Records Memories For YouNow this is interesting – it was slightly more than a week ago when we brought you word of a wearable camera known as the MeCam, but here we are with another MeCam in tow, although this one is slightly different as startup Always Innovating is behind this version of the MeCam that will enable you to have a tiny drone of sorts hovering across your shoulder to record memories for posterity.

In essence, this version of the MeCam is a small quadrocopter flying robot which will be smart enough to follow you like a forlorn looking puppy everywhere you go (as long as its battery lasts, that is), where it will then snap pictures or videos using its built-in digital camera, stream them over to an Android or iOS phone or tablet device, followed by sharing these clips and images on social networks such as Facebook or a video sharing site like YouTube, assuming you want the world to know what’s going on in your life.

The MeCam drone sports 14 sensors so that it can hover around safely and perfectly, and you can even speak to it as it is more than capable of handling voice commands. Expect the MeCam drone to arrive sometime as early as 2014 for approximately $50 a pop.

Double Telepresence Robot At Macworld 2013

Double Telepresence Robot At Macworld 2013If you happen to be at Macworld/iWorld 2013 which is happening at San Francisco, surely one of the “stars” on parade there would be the Double, which is basically a telepresence robot which relies on an iPad to function as its eyes and ears. The Double hails from Double Robotics of Sunnyvale, where it will rely on a 2nd or 3rd generation iPad (which you will need to provide yourself, of course) that has been mounted on top of a slim pole which itself is attached to another gizmo at the bottom, namely motorized wheels that perform the self-balancing act brilliantly.

The Double will tip the scales at 15-pounds, and it can be directed left, right, backward and forward from an iPhone, although we would not stop you if you have a spare iPad on hand to get the job done as well. Alternatively, there is another way to control it from a website, as long as there is a decent Internet connection in place. In a nutshell, the Double lives up to its name, being a virtual “you” at places and times where you are physically unable to be there.

Unwanted TV Remotes Compiled Into Infrared TV

Unwanted TV Remotes Compiled Into Infrared TVSince just about everyone and their dog knows that it is in to be green, there has been no shortage of effort from many quarters to deliver a decent device or product that somewhat shakes hands with nature. Well, how about old, discarded electronics that nobody wants? Artist Chris Shen wants to make a statement by collecting hundreds of second-hand TV remotes, and using them to be part of an infrared television installation, where he has dubbed as INFRA.

INFRA will comprise of 625 old remotes which have been wired up with up to 500 meters of speaker wire, and all of these are connected to a modified Peggy 2 controller board. Having said that, doing so would create an infrared LED matrix that is invisible to the naked eye, but when you put on a pair of infrared goggles, you will be able to make out the light “picture”. Do take into consideration that the resolution would still be rather low, and you might feel as though you have taken a step into a time machine, as everything would be in black and white. http://www.ubergizmo.com/wp-admin/post-new.php#category-add
