Google Supplies iOS Developers With Updated Maps SDK

We think it’s safe to say Google Maps is probably the most popular map tool available these days, especially on iOS due to the the many, many inaccuracies Apple Maps offers to iOS users. Considering how popular Google Maps is on iOS, it’s still a pain in the rump when you click on an address inside of an application to have it launch Apple Maps instead of Google Maps.

Google today is announcing an update to its iOS developer tools to make it easier for developers to integrate Google Maps into their applications. The updated SDK offers the ability for a developers applications to access Google Maps data to offer ground overlays, gesture control and geodesic polylines. (more…)

Konami Code easter egg discovered on Google’s Chromebook Pixel

The Chromebook Pixel has been talked about in regards to specs and pricing, however it would appear as if there is also a rather interesting easter egg. This one deals with the Konami Code and interestingly enough, this is not the first time Google has hidden a Konami Code easter egg in one of their products. Way back in mid-2008 Google Reader had one that greeted you with “Moshi moshi” and marked all your feeds with 30 unread items.

two_arrows_2-580x282

For those not remembering the Konami Code, this goes back to 80′s video games and gave you 30 lives. It was also referred to as the Contra Code. Well, it seems Google has struck once again with the code, this time on the Chromebook Pixel. Basically, if you open your Pixel and type up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right (using the arrow keys), then B, then A you will see the surprise. The LED strip on the top will put on a light show.

Neat, but of course this is not something that is going to magically make the price seem any more attractive. Simply put, the Chromebook Pixel is still expensive. No word as to who from Google made sure this happened, but we suppose that is some of the fun of an easter egg — not only discovering it, but also having a bit of mystery as to where (or who) it came from. It does seem to go without saying though, that whoever is responsible must be a fan of 80′s video games.

Looking back, the Konami Code was made popular with Contra on the NES, but was originally created by Kazuhisa Hashimoto when he was working on Gradius. Aside from the NES, variations were eventually released for the SNES and even the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The code was also seen in Wreck-It Ralph when it was used by King Candy (hat tip to Wikipedia for the Konami Code knowledge).

The Console Wars, Begun They Have: Microsoft May Announce New Xbox At April Event

Image (1) xbox1.jpg for post 105504

A number of solid reports, including a new domain name, XboxEvent.com registered to Microsoft, are pointing to an Xbox event in April. While most console reveals happen at E3, as evidenced by Sony’s mystery-filled conference, Microsoft will probably announce specs and some launch titles and leave the money shot for Los Angeles in June.

Computer & Video Games reported the rumor today and VG247 corroborated it. Considering the timing of Sony’s PS4 announcement, it makes perfect sense for Microsoft to join in the hoopla surrounding next-gen consoles.

The next Xbox, code-named Durango, will require an improved, included Kinect sensor to play and will support game “sections” that allow you to play one portion of the game while the rest loads or downloads. It will support 1080p 3D video and run on 8GB of RAM.

The Best Possible Use For All Your Mismatched Socks

As cliche as the problem sounds, socks really do have a way of going missing in the wash. But why resort to just throwing single socks away, or suffering the embarassment of wearing a mismatched pair, when you can just stitch them all together into a eye-catching throw rug? More »

PlayStation 4′s Killzone: Shadow Fall Featured On Jimmy Fallon

Sony unveiled the PlayStation 4 this past Wednesday, which we’re sure you were already aware of. But if you’re not the kind of person to check tech websites on an hourly basis, you might not have been aware such a big announcement occurred. So what better way to educate the gaming public than by showcasing the PlayStation 4 on a late-night talk show like Late Night with Jimmy Fallon?

Jimmy Fallon had Guerrilla Games’ Hermen Hulst to show off Killzone: Shadow Fall on a prototype PlayStation 4 unit. The demo Fallon plays through is the exact demo that was played during the PlayStation 4 event, although he’s probably one of the first people outside of Sony to get his hands on the new DualShock 4 controller.

Fallon and guest Anthony Anderson play Killzone: Shadow Fall for a bit and discuss the PlayStation 4. Judging by both Fallon and Anderson’s performance, we’d guess neither of them actually played either a first-person shooter or Killzone before as they both spent a lot of time missing their targets and yelling in fear for their lives.

PS4’s final look is unknown even to a Sony exec, but it won’t support the DualShock 3

PS4 Holiday 2013

There’s been some debate over the state of the PlayStation 4’s hardware when Sony declined to display the console itself at its PlayStation Meeting. As we’re quickly learning, the company had good reason to keep the box under wraps: it’s not quite done yet. Sony Computer Entertainment Japan President Hiroshi Kawano has revealed to 4Gamer that even he hasn’t seen the finished system, and he only saw the DualShock 4 the day before it went on stage. We wouldn’t worry about the design’s progress just yet, but the news hints that Sony’s timing on pulling it all together is much tighter than it was for the PS3 — although that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Whatever the PS4 looks like in the end, we know it won’t support the DualShock 3. Perpetual font of wisdom (and Worldwide Studios President) Shuhei Yoshida has warned that the PlayStation Move is the only controller making the leap to the next generation. That’s not entirely surprising given the changes in button layout and the addition of some Move technology — Sony likely wants to set some expectations, and our existing game library won’t play on the PS4 as-is. The cutoff may still be disappointing for anyone who invested in a full set of gamepads for LittleBigPlanet sessions and has to once more start from scratch.

The Playstation 4 Could Change the Face of Gaming

For those of you not already aware; Wednesday was a big day for the games
industry. it was on that day, early into the evening, that the
Playstation 4 – Sony’s next generation offering- was finally unveiled,
to much fanfare. The console, which is due by the holiday season of
2013; is easily powerful enough to blow pretty much any of the current
gen offerings straight out of the water, and the launch titles thus far
look positively brilliant. That’s not what makes it exciting, though.

It’s only when one looks closer – at some of the features of the
console – that one realizes just what this system could mean for the industry.

Microsoft Surface Pro Available Again For Sale In Limited Supply

Microsoft Surface Pro Available Again For Sale In Limited Supply

The Microsoft Surface Pro was officially released on February 9, to which it immediately sold out. It’s been two weeks since the Surface Pro sold out, but it looks as though Microsoft has finally supplied additional units to its stores, both online and brick & mortar.

Both the 64GB and 128GB versions were reported as being available for sale yesterday, although Microsoft’s online store is currently showing the 128GB version of the Surface Pro as being out of stock. As for Microsoft stores, a number of them reportedly still have units available for sale, but supplies are limited.

Customers who have been wanting to buy a Surface Pro have been having a rather difficult time since it sold out on February 9, but Panos Panay, who is the head of Microsoft’s Surface team, has said “We’re working with our retail partners who are currently out of stock of the 128GB Surface Pro to replenish supplies as quickly as possible.” It only has been two weeks since the Surface Pro went on sale, but we hope Microsoft can stock its stores with additional units sooner than later.

YouTube For Android Updated

YouTube For Android Updated How many of you actually spend more time on YouTube on your Android-powered device than on a notebook or desktop computer? Well, with the advent of 4G LTE connectivity, you know that mobile data has become a whole lot faster and more convenient for the masses, which is more than enough to stream YouTube videos on the go without having to be bogged down by the nasty “waiting” icon. Having said that, for folks who actually use YouTube for Android far more frequent than you should, here is some good news – the app has been bumped up to version 4.3.9, and this being a minor update, it will still be able to pack enough punch by introducing a bunch of new features.

First of all would be the integration of Google+ into YouTube, which is not out of place considering the overall direction of Google where their product line is headed. Apart from that, users of YouTube for Android will be most pleased to control TV playback from the notification bar itself, which will do its bit to expand the app’s potential to double up as a leanback controller for the YouTube ecosystem.
