Toshiba mobile RAM uses prediction, adaptation to cut power use by up to 85 percent

Toshiba uses prediction, adaptation to cut mobile RAM power by up to 85 percent

RAM remains one of the principal drains on a smartphone’s battery: it’s almost always in use, and it saps power even when its host device is idle in a pocket. Toshiba hasn’t eliminated that demand entirely, but its new SRAM (not yet pictured here) is intelligent enough to cut a lot of the waste. The memory can better predict what power it’s going to need while it’s active, and includes a smarter retention circuit that occasionally wakes up to tweak buffer size while it’s on standby. While these sound all too abstract, they should lead to some very tangible gains. Toshiba estimates that the SRAM chews up 27 percent less power when live, and 85 percent less when it’s just waiting for action. The company doesn’t yet know when the RAM will reach finished devices, but we’re hoping it’s soon when even mainstream phones like the Optimus F7 will ship with 2GB of RAM; that energy draw isn’t going down all by itself.

Radical New Image Sensor Turns your Entire Display Into a Digital Camera

Researchers at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria have developed a new kind of image sensor that could one day revolutionize the form factor of digital cameras. Instead of a postage stamp-sized digital eye, the sensor is a flat, flexible, transparent plastic sheet that could be invisibly overlayed on displays, or just used as is. More »

Enyo arrives to Windows 8, WP8 and Blackberry 10 with version 2.2

Enyo arrives to Windows 8, WP and Blackberry 10 with version 22

Enyo originally came along from HP to help developers create resolution-independent webOS apps, but since version 2.0, it’s become platform agnostic. While support for Windows 8 and WP8 through IE10 has been around for awhile, version 2.2 now brings packaged app creation for those OSes along with Blackberry 10 at the highest Tier 1 support level. The platform still requires native “container” software to package apps, with Enyo advising Visual Studio for Windows 8 and Cordova for WP8 and Blackberry 10. The company’s swatted a few bugs and added contextual popups too, so if you’re looking to get your JavaScript on, hit the source.

Google Glass Targeting End Of 2013 Consumer Release, With Price Tag Under $1,500

glass-model-logo-google

Google seems to be looking to bring its ambitious Google Glass wearable computer to market much faster than many likely anticipated, according to the Verge. Google told the site that it hopes to have a “fully-polished” version of Glass available for sale to ordinary consumers by the end of 2013. The cost will be under the $1,500 Google was asking for developer-targeted editions of the headsets put up for pre-order first at Google I/O, and then again earlier this week.

This is the most clear Google has been yet about its public release schedule for the headset-mounted computing device. The company had previously been reported to be targeting a year-end 2013 consumer release, with a price point around that of current smartphones, according to a report from last February by the New York Times’ Nick Bilton. Then in June 2012, Google co-founder Sergey Brin suggested that a rough timeline for developer and consumer availability would put the device in the hands of the general public in 2014.

This time, a Google official has said directly that the company is targeting an end-of-year release date, so there’s little room for different interpretations there, and the credibility of the source isn’t up for debate. Google’s recent release to a broader audience beyond just developers via an application process indicates things might be moving quicker than the company previously expected.

The Verge also got some extended hands-on time with Glass, and notes that it is compatible with iPhone devices as well as Android handsets. They also came away convinced that this is something that Google will eventually be able to turn into a device with mass-market appeal, whether or not it’s quite at that stage by the time it hopefully hits shelves later this year.

Etsy seller Ivana Roso aka pepolina said she sewed the individual parts by hand, then put the backpack together using a sewing machine. She didn’t say what materials she used, although looking at it I think it’s made of synthetic leather.

Ex-Blackwater Employees’ Felony Charges Dropped, Said CIA Told Them To Provide King WIth Rifles

RALEIGH, N.C. — The federal prosecution of five former employees of the private security firm Blackwater has collapsed after the defendants said they were acting at the direction of the CIA by providing five automatic rifles as gifts to King Abdullah of Jordan.

Federal prosecutors had indicted former Blackwater president Gary Jackson and four others on a long list of felony firearms violations in 2010. But charges against three of them were dropped Thursday.

The World’s Longest Floating Bridge Is No Longer Dying

At more than 7,580 feet long, Seattle’s Governor Albert D. Rosellini Bridge is already the world’s longest floating bridge. But after fifty years of service the four-lane concrete span has aged worse than Gerard Depardieu. Its pontoon supports can no longer endure the region’s strong storms and the bridge itself is likely to collapse under a moderate earthquake. But Washington can rebuild it, they have the power, they have the technology. More »
