Harvard Nap Room Under Consideration After Student’s Petition Finds Support

The Harvard administration is considering creating a nap room on campus after sophomore Yuqi Hou started a petition that received 191 yes votes, The Boston Globe reports. It’s one of three petitions that gained formal consideration last month by Dean of Harvard College Evelynn M. Hammonds.

Hou found in an online survey, which 432 undergraduates responded to, that just 21 percent of Harvard undergrads felt like they got enough sleep, and that nearly 60 percent were in favor of establishing a nap room, The Harvard Crimson reports.

“Most students operate daily on a sleep deficit, to the detriment of their health and productivity,” Hou, 19, told The Globe. “For those getting insufficient sleep at night, naps can provide alertness and help students take a break from their hectic schedules.”

The U.S. Air Force’s mysterious X-37B space plane is quietly chalking up mileage in space more than two months after its latest launch into orbit.

The robotic X-37B space plane soared into orbit atop an Atlas 5 rocket from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Dec. 11. The mini-shuttle’s mission is known as Orbital Test Vehicle-3 (OTV-3), since it is the third classified mission under the Air Force’s X-37B program.

How long OTV-3 will remain in Earth orbit is unknown. The hush-hush space plane mission is officially on Air Force space tracking books as USA-240.

"The mission is ongoing," Air Force Maj. Eric Badger, a spokesman for the X-37B program, told SPACE.com. "As with previous missions, the actual duration will depend on test objectives, on-orbit vehicle performance and conditions at the landing facility." [Photos: U.S. Military’s X-37B Space Plane]

Indigenous Women In Mexico Call For An End To Domestic Violence

A group of indigenous rarámuri women in Sierra Tarahumara, north of Mexico, have launched a campaign to stop the increasing violence they face daily, which in many cases is culturally accepted in their communities and involves physical, verbal, psychological and sexual aggression.

They are known as “las multiplicadoras” (“the multipliers”) and their mission is to raise consciousness by educating men and women from the mountains of Chihuahua to reverse the pattern of abuse, program coordinator Vianney Salas said in an interview with Univision’s “Primer Impacto.”

“They come out different,” Salas said. “They come out of this program understanding the right to have a life free of violence.”

Michael Rivera Arrested For Vandalism As Mother Jenni Rivera Honored At Premio Lo Nuestro

This may not be the best way to honor Jenni Rivera’s legacy.

The late Mexican American pop star’s son, Michael Marin Rivera, was arrested on charges of vandalism in Miami on Thursday, the same night his mother was honored with a tribute at Premio Lo Nuestro in the same city.

Rivera, 22, allegedly left between $200 and $1,000 worth of property damage, The Houston Chronicle reports. A judge set Rivera’s bail at $1,000.

2014 Jeep Cherokee leaks, squints back at us

We’ve already seen what the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee looks like, as well as its SRT brethren, but we have yet to hear anything on the regular 2014 Cherokee, until now. A selection of photos have leaked that show the 2014 Cherokee in its birthplace. We even get a glimpse of the interior, but there sadly don’t seem to be any photos of the rear of the new vehicle just yet.

Jalopnik ended up getting a sizable amount of photos of the new SUV, and we have to say the all-new design is rather odd. The company still stuck with their unique grille design that they’ve had since the beginning, but the headlights are a lot smaller this time around. However, Jeep added larger headlights further down the front, as well as floodlights toward the bottom.

All in all, the new 2014 Cherokee looks like the combination between a Nissan Juke, an Isuzu Axiom, and an Alfa Romeo. There’s plenty of body cladding all around the bottom, and you can’t leave out the big tires with a slight lift in suspension. It’s certainly a bold new design that Jeep has gone with, and it’ll be interesting to see the reception it gets when it eventually comes out.

It’s said the 2014 Cherokee will come in V6 and V4 engine options, but the V6 may have a 3.2-liter motor rather than the 3.6-liter to save on fuel mileage. Plus, it the V6 may be the only option in the US, while other countries will have the option of a four-cylinder 2-liter diesel offering. It’s expected that this 2014 Cherokee will make its official debut at the New York Auto Show next month.

Feds Say Neo-Nazi With Guns Was Tracking Community Leaders

FBI agents recently warned community leaders in the Detroit area about a possible racist plot by a convicted felon and alleged neo-Nazi sympathizer who was arrested after he was discovered with an arsenal of assault rifles and other weapons, a law enforcement official tells NBC News.

“The FBI averted a catastrophe in this case, there’s no doubt about it,” Steven M. Dettelbach, the U.S. attorney in Cleveland, said in an interview.

North Carolina Lawmakers Kill Medical Marijuana Bill After It Receives Annoying Level Of Support

The GOP-controlled North Carolina House Rules Committee killed a medical marijuana legalization bill earlier this week, after lawmakers complained that backers of the measure were bothering them with requests for their support.

As WRAL’s N.C. Capitol blog reports, lawmakers allowed only 20 minutes of public debate on the legislation before deciding to give it an “unfavorable report.” An infrequently used procedure, such an action effectively prevents any further medical marijuana legalization bills from being considered by the General Assembly this session.

A state Republican explained the extraordinary maneuver to N.C. Capital blog:

Ruben Barrales Hired By Republican Pac, GROW Elect, In Effort To Elect More Latinos

A political action committee formed to help elect Latino Republicans to office in California has hired Ruben Barrales, a former White House aide and San Mateo County supervisor, to be its president and chief executive officer.

The group, GROW Elect, said in a prepared statement that Barrales’ appointment “is part of an aggressive expansion” of its effort to elect Latino Republicans to local, state and federal offices.

The group last year involved itself mostly in local races and was a relatively small operation, spending less than $150,000. It was funded largely by Charles Munger Jr., a wealthy Republican activist.
