Dedicated GPS navigation devices have been around for quite some time already, although there is the very real and present danger of such a niche market to go out of vogue with the plethora of devices these days (smartphones and tablets, especially) that already come with their fair share of built-in GPS navigation capability, hence doing away with the need for a dedicated GPS device. Still, companies like TomTom and Magellan are still around, and the latter has decided to expand the worldwide availability of their Magellan Switch Series of crossover GPS watches across the pond, specially targeting athletes who run, bike, swim or participate in a wide range of outdoor activities. The Magellan Switch and Switch Up watches will be made available from this month onwards from select retailers and via Magellan’s European distribution network.
In order to offer more support for their European users, Magellan has decided to expand its Magellan Active website (active.magellangps.com) by throwing in more languages such as French, Spanish, German, Italian and Dutch, and of course, the mainstay, English. Magellan Active makes it a snap for multisport athletes who want to record their performance data on Magellan’s Switch Series, as it is easy to upload and track data online using intuitive charts, maps and metrics, all from a single location.
The Magellan Switch Series of crossover GPS watches will include some more innovative features including an ‘Activity Pacer’ which will tell runners should they be on target with their goal, while offering specific targets in order to attain the desired result. There is the Switch GPS watch which was specially designed for runners, and remains as a powerful fitness training device that has been packed with innovative features which will include nine customizable sport profiles, easy-to-read high resolution display, eight hours of battery life, a high sensitivity GPS receiver, 50 meter water resistance, and compatibility with ANT+ sensors.
The Magellan Switch Series will be available as of now from Magellan’s European distribution partners serving UK, France, Germany, Turkey, Spain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Benelux.

This week was a big one for gamers with Sony unveiling the PlayStation 4 along with teasing some video games that will be coming to the system. Fans of driving/racing games and cool cars are excited about the video game Driveclub that looks poised to boot Forza and Gran Turismo from the top of the coolest driving game pile. Mercedes has announced that two of its new vehicles will be featured in that game.
The video game rendering you see here is one of the first images of the CLA 45 AMG to be shown. The rendering almost looks like an actual picture of the car and shows off the sexy lines of the Mercedes vehicle and the epic graphics Driveclub will offer. The video game and the PlayStation 4 will launch this holiday season, but the first real world unveil for the CLA 45 AMG and the A 45 AMG featured in the game will be in March.
The Mercedes A 45 AMG is the luxury automakers first high-performance offering for the compact vehicle segment. This vehicle will be presented at the Geneva auto show. The CLA 45 AMG will make its world premiere in New York. The vehicle has 360 HP and 450 nm of torque produced by an AMG tuned 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
The four-cylinder engine uses turbocharger tech to achieve its status as the world’s most powerful four-cylinder engine in series production. Both of these AMG tuned vehicles come standard with performance oriented AMG 4Matic all-wheel drive.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 has to be one of the most anticipated smartphone launches as far as 2013 is concerned, and the rumors of the device, alleged specs and such have been flying off the handle. Now rumors have suggested that the Galaxy S4 will feature a 13MP rear-facing camera, much like Sony’s Xperia Z, and the folks at Androsym have stumbled across some photos on Google+ which appear to have been taken by a certain Samsung GT-I9500, which has been speculated to be the Galaxy S4. The photos have since been removed, but the folks at Androsym have provided some screenshots of the photos on Google+, along with the photos’ EXIF data. (more…)

Sony has been receiving quite a bit of flack after its PlayStation 4 event. After all with all the fuss they made, the console itself was not revealed save for its DualShock 4 controller. Sony’s president of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, said that this was because they wanted to make it a surprise and to prevent us from getting bored, but apparently that isn’t the real reason. It seems that in several interviews with some of Sony’s high level executives basically revealed that Sony themselves aren’t too sure of the PS4’s final design. (more…)

Most of us tend to upload photos onto Facebook on a daily basis, whether it be photos of our food, or outings with friends and family. However have you noticed that while you might be uploading new photos consistently, how often do you actually go back and look at old photos that might have been uploaded say half a year ago? Personally I do go back to old photos once every few months just to reminisce, but having all those old photos sitting there just isn’t very efficient as far as managing data is concerned. This is why a report from the Oregonian has revealed that Facebook is supposedly gearing up to launch three new “cold storage” facilities at its Prineville, Oregon data centers.
Unlike Facebook’s typical servers which are always on, these servers will instead be on standby, making it perfect for older uploaded photos. Obviously there will be some downsides to putting photos in cold storage and slower access might be one of them, but the upside is that this would help lessen the amount of power Facebook’s servers would need to consume and manage data more efficiently which could help with loading times and performance. It’s hard to tell just how slow accessing these older photos might be, or if the drop in speed will be noticeable, but the report has suggested that the first server will be going live this Fall, so we guess will just have to wait to find out.

Three major Zendesk clients were affected by the security breach this week that allowed hackers into their systems. Zendesk is a customer service software provider and it announced this week that its system had been compromised. The three major clients affected by the security breach include twitter, Pinterest, and Tumblr.
Zendesk announced the security breach via a blog post early Thursday night. Tumblr notified affected users via e-mail at 6:35 PM PST on Thursday night that their accounts may have been affected by the security breach. Both twitter and Pinterest are expected to begin notifying affected users soon.
Zendesk wrote that it had become aware that a hacker had access to its system this week and as soon as it learned about the attack it patched the vulnerability and closed the hackers access. The company says that the hacker had access to support information that three of its major customer store on it system. The hacker is believed to have downloaded e-mail addresses of users that had contacted those three companies for support.
The hacker was also able to obtain support e-mail subject lines. Wired reports that it has a source claiming that some customers could have had their phone number revealed as well, but no passwords, password hashes, or encrypted passwords were stolen by the hacker. None of the three companies affected in the hack are aware of any user accounts being compromised.

It was a couple of days ago since Sony unveiled the PlayStation 4, and we’re sure that there are many gamers out there who are excited about getting their hands on the console, perhaps firing up a couple of multiplayer games. Now the bad news is that if you were hoping to save money by reusing your PlayStation 3 controllers with the PlayStation 4 rather than buying brand new DualShock 4 controllers, you’re out of luck. In a roundtable discussion held yesterday, Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony’s Worldwide Studios revealed that PS3 controllers will not be compatible with the PS4.
This is rather odd considering that the DualShock 4 controllers aren’t a radical departure from the DualShock 3. Granted there is a touchpad embedded along with a motion sensor similar to the Move, the layout appears to be more or less similar, and it would have been reasonable to expect that games that do not require the touchpad or the motion controller would support the DualShock 3 controller. In any case if you were hoping to play multiplayer games on the same console, it looks like you got to start saving up for brand new controllers.
