Tom O’Neil: Watch Oscars predictions smackdown: HuffPo vs. Gold Derby editors

Call it Oscars Armageddon – our final, fiercest battle of derby season. HuffPo editors Michael Hogan and Chris Rosen and I have clashed over predictions often during the previous months, but no one is vanquished – yet.

In the video below, as hard as I blast away at poor Chris to give up his fight for Michael Hanake (Amour) in the directors’ category, he won’t cave. Meantime, Mike valiantly carries his flag for David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) and, in the supporting actors’ slot, I refuse to agree with their joint view that the winner will be Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook). Nope, I say it will be Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) and that’s that.

Watch our slugfest below and decide for yourself who is correct. Here you can view all of our predictions, compared to the forecasts of 23 other top Oscarologists. Here is our collective view when the predictions are combined and translated into rankings and odds.

Cornell scientists 3D print ears with help from rat tails and cow ears

Cornell scientists 3D print ears with help from rat tails and cow ears

Science! A team of bioengineers and physicians over at Cornell University recently detailed their work to 3D print lifelike ears that may be used to treat birth defects like microtia and assist those who have lost or damaged an ear due to an accident or cancer. The product, which is, “practically identical to the human ear,” according to the school, was created using 3D printing and gels made from living cells — collagen was gathered from rat tails and cartilage cells were taken from cow’s ears. The whole process is quite quick, according to associate professor Lawrence Bonassar, who co-authored the report on the matter,

“It takes half a day to design the mold, a day or so to print it, 30 minutes to inject the gel, and we can remove the ear 15 minutes later. We trim the ear and then let it culture for several days in nourishing cell culture media before it is implanted.”

The team is looking to implant the first ear in around three years, if all goes well.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel Continues Arguments Against Bail As Oscar Pistorius Hearing Continues

PRETORIA, South Africa — The fourth and likely final day of Oscar Pistorius’ bail hearing opened on Friday, with the magistrate then to rule if the double-amputee athlete can be freed before trial or if he has to remain in custody over the shooting death of his girlfriend.

The prosecution is expected to complete its arguments opposing bail. The defense rested on Thursday, and Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair can issue a ruling on bail at any time after arguments finish.

‘Project Runway’: Miranda Lambert Is Guest Judge, Offers Harsh Critiques (VIDEO)

The challenge for this week of “Project Runway” was to design a dress for country music star Miranda Lambert. To add to the pressure, Miranda was there herself to help judge the designs and offer her own critiques. And she proved that she had no intention of being one of those gushing celebrities who says everything is great. She didn’t hold back at all.

She was particularly disappointed in Matt, who saw himself land in the bottom thanks to his design. He couldn’t stop apologizing for it, either, which seemed to bother Miranda more than the design itself.

“You know what? I don’t even want to talk about it, because you obviously know what’s wrong with it,” she said. “I just want to talk about you not having confidence in your own craft. Because, if you don’t have confidence in your craft, then no one else can.”

Jimmy Fallon gets first PS4 hands-on, plays some Killzone: Shadow Fall (video)

Jimmy Fallon gets first PS4 handson, plays some Killzone Shadow Fall video

First things first: We still haven’t seen the PlayStation 4. That said, if you’d like to see someone other than a Sony rep or developer putting their hands all over that DualShock 4 with touchpad and share button — we asked, but apparently network TV still trumps internet — then say no more. Managing Director of Guerilla Games Hermen Hulst came by the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show with a prototype unit (not shown) loaded up with the Killzone: Shadow Fall demo we saw at the press conference. Jimmy and guest Anthony Anderson played a bit, with varying degrees of success and were predictably impressed by the new system, due to release by the end of this year. Unfortunately, there’s no new information to be had, unless you wanted to know what the ceilings in the game look like (clearly, Anderson prefers to play shooters inverted). Watch the video embedded after the break, we’re going to doublecheck ?uestlove’s Instagram to see if he got any backstage or setup shots of the system behind the curtain.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Catherine Avery Swoops In At The Last Minute To Save Seattle Grace (VIDEO)

Before taking a short hiatus, “Grey’s Anatomy” wrapped up the hospital bankruptcy situation quite nicely. The plane crash five (Arizona, Callie, Cristina, Derek and Meredith) were looking for an investor to partner in their bed to buy the hospital. In an unexpected last-minute save, it was Jackson’s mother, Catherine, and The Harper-Avery Foundation that saved the day.

She’d come to Seattle to try and encourage Jackson to move to Boston and take a more active role in the foundation. With the crisis at Seattle Grace, she found a way to allow him to stay and still have him more involved.

“It is my pleasure that the Harper-Avery foundation would like very much to take you up on that offer,” she told Cristina. The foundation became the majority shareholder, and in doing so demanded one seat on the board. A seat Catherine would fill with Jackson.

North Korea to grant mobile internet access to visitors, but not citizens

North Korea to grant mobile internet access to visitors, but not citizens

In just a few days, visitors to North Korea will be able to surf the web from 3G-enabled devices. According to the Associated Press, customers of telecom company Koryolink living in Pyongyang received word that the firm will launch a 3G internet service exclusively for foreigners no later than March 1st. While citizens of North Korea have access to things including MMS, video calls, and a subscription to the state-run newspaper over 3G, a connection to the global internet will remain exclusive to a small, approved slice of the population using broadband. Foreigners will be able to purchase a monthly service plan for use with a USB modem or their very own SIM card. It’s hard to say if Eric Schmidt’s trip nudged the country and the service provider to change their tune, but in any case we’re hoping Señor Schmidt will consider visiting Cuba as well.

Nikon And Microsoft Sign Android-Based Camera Patent Deal

Nikon And Microsoft Sign Android Based Camera Patent DealSamsung has forayed into the world of Android-powered cameras in recent times, what with the Samsung Galaxy Camera range that some thought would never take off, but it has attracted its fair share of fans over the weeks and months. Could there be other camera manufacturers that are looking to jump aboard the Android bandwagon? Perhaps, as Microsoft as well as Nikon have already signed a patent-licensing agreement, and this particular agreement is said to provide “broad coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio for certain Nikon cameras running the Android platform.”

So far, both Microsoft and Nikon have agreed not to disclose any specific details on the situation, but Microsoft did say that they will receive undisclosed royalties from Nikon under this agreement. Similar to Microsoft’s other Android, Linux and Chrome OS patent deals, we have no idea the exact nature of Microsoft-patented technologies that the vendors are licensing. Let’s see what the future holds for Android and Nikon from now on. [Press Release]
