North Korea Mobile Internet Coming, Residents To Sit This One Out As Usual

North Korea Mobile Internet Coming, Residents To Sit This One Out As UsualNorth Korea has been described as a failed or pariah state by many independent observers, where most of the power and wealth are all concentrated in the ruling military elite. Having said that, the country seems to care more about the pursuit of weapons rather than to make sure its citizens are well fed, and the latest development would be preparation of mobile Internet service, albeit not for residents. It is just one month after cell phone access is made available to foreigners living inside the country, and it is nice to know that 3G mobile access to the Internet will soon arrive, although residents will have to give this a miss.

It is said that 3G service will be operational within North Korea’s borders by the time March 1st rolls around, although North Koreans will be unable to enjoy such a facility. Koryolink, a 3G mobile provider that is partially owned by the North Korean government, will soon open up subscription to monthly data plans for foreigners.

Blackjack Dealer Robot Helps Even Up The Odds

Do you love Blackjack? If that is the case, surely part of the thrill include reading emotion at the table as you see the Blackjack dealer deal out cards for everyone. The game tends to be stacked against the players in favor of the dealer which is why a robotics company decided to remove the last bastion of defense that players have against the dealer, that is, human error. Yaskawa Motoman Robotics paraded their SDA10F robot at a Blackjack table last month at Chicago’s Automate 2013, and as you can watch in the video above, it deals hands out thanks to a technology known as Cognex 2D. Cognex 2D is a vision guidance system that can read the cards and deal appropriately.

Will we start to see such robots actually appear in casinos down the road in order to reduce costs in the long run, and since robots do not get tired, and neither do they complain about low wages, they can perpetually be at the table all day and night long, as streams of people come and leave the casino. Thing is, the lack of a human touch, or scantily clad female dealers in numerous casinos in Sin City, are still part of the attraction, and robots and downright boring.

Germ-Killing Robot

Germ Killing RobotWe know that the world of robotics has clearly crossed paths with everyday life, and just as an example, Mark Stibich was greeted by the Star Wars theme song when he walked into the boardroom of a Florida hospital in June last year, thanks to Stibich’s germ-busting robot that does resemble the famous astromech droid, R2-D2. Stibich’s robot runs on wheels, and emits a pulse of ultraviolet light which will help disinfect rooms through the elimination of viruses and bacteria.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center was the first hospital to give the Xenex robot (as called by Stibich) a go, and figured out that it actually reduced overall bacterial contamination by a factor of 20 and killed 95% of the deadly pathogen C. difficile. Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, Mass., relies on a trio of rented Xenex robots, and have since seen C. diff infections drop by a stunning 53%. Each of these bad boys will cost a rather hefty $125,000 if you want to purchase them outright, or you can rent them for $3,700 each month.

Orange Serves Up Nivo, San Remo And Lumo Android-Powered Smartphones

Orange Serves Up Nivo, San Remo And Lumo Android Powered SmartphonesFrench mobile operator Orange does have a presence in other countries as well, and they have just announced a trio of spanking new Android-powered smartphones. While these three handsets will not shatter your world by occupying the high end side of things, they are certainly decent enough to use as a workman’s device. A couple of these will be powered by Qualcomm chips, although the San Remo relies on a MediaTek chip. The most affordable of the lot would be the Nivo, where it sports a 4-inch 800 x 480 display, a 5-megapixel camera, a dual-core 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S2 processor, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

As for the MediaTek-powered San Remo, this puppy has a dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor, with a 4.7” display at a mere 800 x 480 pixels resolution, accompanied by an 8-megapixel shooter at the back and a 2-megapixel shooter in front. Last but not least, the Lumo is the most well equipped of the three, featuring 4G LTE support, an 8-megapixel shooter, a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm S4 Plus processor, and a 4.5” display at 960 × 540 pixels. There is no word on pricing just yet though, so stay tuned. [Press Release]

‘Suits’ Finale: In The War For The Firm, Jessica Asserts Her Authority Over Harvey (VIDEO)

Things got angry and heated and ugly in the season finale of “Suits” on USA. The episode was very appropriately title “War.” And while it was mostly a war for the future of the firm — to merge or not to merge — it was more a very personal battle between Jessica and Harvey.

In this episode, Harvey — and Mike — learned just how far Jessica was willing to go to get her way and assert her dominance. It meant she put a kibosh on the secret filings to try and undermine the merger deal. She did so by threatening to expose Mike and destroy him, leading him to back down. In doing so, he didn’t realize how much what he was doing impacted Harvey’s standing.

In triumph, Jessica said to Harvey, “Boy, I just kicked your ass. And you didn’t just want it, you begged me for it. So, now, you’re going to stay here, be humble and learn your G*dd*mn place!”

Galaxy S4 Delay Due To Exynos 5 Issues?

Galaxy S4 Delay Due To Exynos 5 Issues? We have definitely seen our fair share of rumors concerning the next flagship from South Korean smartphone powerhouse Samsung, where among them include a bumper case, launching with 5G Wi-Fi, and a March 14th release date to name a few. Well, a rather interesting report from South Korea has just appeared, touting that Samsung’s Exynos 5 octa-core processor has run into production issues, and that this is serious. In fact, it would be the reason why Samsung has not closed the door on Qualcomm Snapdragon SoCs to be in the innards of their upcoming Galaxy S4 smartphone.

We are not quite sure just how true this particular report from South Korea is, and whether it might actually see Samsung ditch the entire Exynos 5 effort from their future devices, but we guess there is always the Great Teacher (some say Great Destroyer), Time, to show us the way. I do suppose that executives over at Qualcomm must be singing, “Happy days are here again…”, keeping their fingers crossed that Samsung will fail with the Exynos 5.

Publisher’s note: while this is a post discussing the alleged Exynos production issues, it is worth nothing that it is very unlikely that Samsung would “ditch” it altogether. While production issues often happen early in a chip’s life cycle, most of those problems are worked out and given that Samsung has already demonstrated working samples, the chip logic (design) seems out of danger. Now, the question is whether or not Samsung can produce enough of these chips to meet demand.

Instagram: No To BlackBerry 10

Instagram: No To BlackBerry 10BlackBerry 10 is meant to be the messianic operating system for the company formerly known as RIM (all right, enough Prince references for now, we shall just call a spade a spade; BlackBerry), but a lot of that vision will also depend on famous development houses rolling out compatible apps for the new BlackBerry 10 platform. So far, BlackBerry World already has luminaries such as Skype, Facebook, Twitter and Angry Birds Star Wars, with others due to arrive as well, but a major name remains off the list – that is, Instagram. Yes sir, Instagram with over 90 million users using it each month, has been seen by certain quarters to be a deal breaking for not jumping over to the BlackBerry 10 platform.

It makes sense really, considering how BlackBerry has decided to adopt a fresh and younger approach to their recently released smartphones, and to lack a native BlackBerry 10 app for Instagram is not cool at all. Guess BlackBerry Z10 owners who used to Instagram loads on their previous Android handset might find this news a bit hard to swallow. Is it a deal breaker for you?

Russian Ostrich Robot Costs Only $1,500 To Build

Russian Ostrich Robot Costs Only $1,500 To BuildNecessity is the mother of all invention, but what about building stuff just for fun, or out of interest as your hobby? I suppose enthusiasm as well as the constant striving to improve oneself is there in this bunch of Russians, who actually forked out around $1,500 in parts to construct this two-legged Ostrich robot from scratch. You can basically ride on this robot, and we do wish that it resembled more of a Chocobo than an ostrich for that added Final Fantasy element.

The enthusiast-built Russian ostrich robot will rely on a sliding internal weight in order for it to maintain its balance, but of course, since this is not a project by Tony Stark, caution still needs to be used in abundance just in case you slip or something worse happens. The group of robotics enthusiasts who actually built this comprise of an electronics engineer and a an aviation tech, and perhaps they can come up with something better than an Iron Man suit should they have proper funding. Let’s hope they’re on the Stars and Stripes’ side when that happens.

Skype For Windows 8 Updated

Skype For Windows 8 UpdatedA new software update is always more than welcome by hardware owners, but if and only if the software itself has been thoroughly tested to make sure that it runs smooth as butter without causing more headaches. After all, an update ought to come with its fair share of bug fixes, so to hear news of Skype for Windows 8 being bumped to version 1.5.0.109 surely brings more than just a smile to our faces. Of course, there will be new features thrown into the mix, but do not expect anything groundbreaking or earth shaking here.

Some of the features will include the ability to send and receive files, something which we take for granted on the desktop version of Skype, performance improvements and of course, general fixes. No longer will running Skype on an RT device drive you bonkers as your mates send files to one another, but you are unable to retrieve those files. The latest Skype for Windows 8 update is now available over at the Windows Store, so what are you waiting for?
