MakerBot To Enable Gamers To 3D-Print Their Own OUYA Android Console Cases

_MG_0758

MakerBot and OUYA announced a partnership today that will allow gamers to print their own OUYA game console cases at home. The partnership will see OUYA create 3D design files for Thingiverse.com, MakerBot’s 3D printing design repository, which are designed to be used with the MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D printer.

The OUYA Game Console Enclosure design created by MakerBot allows OUYA console owners to print their own case, which includes a lid and a spring-loaded button for housing the hardware. They can also be printed on the MakerBot Replicator 2X Experimental 3D printer for those who want to use ABS instead of PLA to print their designs.

It’s a move that brings an advanced level of customization to the OUYA, which is already based on an open-sourced development kit, which, while it limits developers in some ways, allows for a wide range of flexibility. The addition of home 3D-printable hardware elements makes for yet more personalization options, and could make for additional opportunities for game creators to develop case mod tie-ins for their titles.

MakerBot says on its website for the OUYA console kit design that it can be opened with a user’s own 3D printing software to make modifications and additional customizations, so we could see much more than the standard Yves Behar-sourced cube with a rounded edge at the bottom.

Springpad note-taking service gets interface overhaul, now an even worthier rival to Evernote

Springpad notetaking platform gets web interface overhaul, now an even worthier rival to Evernote

Springpad may lack Evernote‘s commercial clout, but it makes up for it in a number of ways — not least with free-of-charge features like offline access from its mobile apps (which certain rivals charge for) and Pinterest-style sharing options. The interface hasn’t been a particular strong point, but that could be about to change as version 4.0 has just gone live for at least some users of the web interface. The new UI centers everything on three key buttons along the top:

  • Springs — which gives you immediate access to your latest notes, regardless of which device you made them on
  • Notebooks — for organizing your notes into projects
  • Search & Do — which, needless to say, lets you search your notes, but also suggests activities based to-do tasks you’ve created.

The same, simplified philosophy is due to hit Springpad’s iOS and Android apps soon, although there’s no sign of that happening just yet. In meantime, check out the web interface for yourself at the source link.

200-mph red bullet trains thrill rail-mad Japan

TOKYO — The crowd lining the end of Tokyo Station’s platform 22 is four people deep.

They’re jostling for position with their cameras — trainspotters, parents, and children alike — to get a shot of Japan’s latest bullet train: the Series E6 Shinkansen, known as the Super Komachi.

They all bought tickets for the privilege of entering this part of the sprawling terminal that serves 380,000 passengers daily, and operator JR East has to deploy extra security guards to keep them a safe distance from the glistening new locomotive.

With services to northern Japan on the Akita Shinkansen Line, the Super Komachi debuted earlier this month as one of Japan’s fastest commercial trains.

It has been traveling at 300 kph (186 mph) and will eventually run at 320 kph (198.8 mph), also the new operational speed of the Series E5 Hayabusa, among the world’s fastest along with France’s TGV.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 delayed into “early summer”

As Plants vs. Zombies Adventures launches today on Facebook, developer PopCap has a little bit of bad news for fans of the franchise. Plants vs. Zombies 2 will be ever-so-slightly delayed into the “early summer.” The game was originally planned for a “late spring” launch when the studio announced the game back in August.

It’s been about three years since the original Plants vs. Zombies game was released, and it won the hearts of casual strategy gamers everywhere. After being ported to almost every single platform, PopCap is ready to release the sequel this summer. No concrete release date has been announced, but “early summer” could mean a late May or June release.

We’re still a couple of months away from that time frame, but gamers are no doubt already marking their calendars. However, details about the sequel are rather scarce, with PopCap only mentioning that the new game would launch with “a bevy of new features, settings and situations,” which obviously isn’t anything to be surprised about.

In the meantime, you can play around with Plants vs. Zombies Adventures on Facebook, which should hold you up until the sequel is released in a few months. The Facebook game takes on a different approach than the original title. This time, the zombies walk along a path, while you must set up plant defenses all along the path to prevent the zombies from passing by and reaching the end.
