Operational F-35B fighter jet’s first vertical landing was years, billions in the making (video)

F35B fighter jet makes first vertical landing video

Lockheed Martin’s F-35 program has been a political whipping boy seemingly forever, but a production VTOL ‘B’-variant of the pricey supersonic jet finally did what it was made for: a vertical landing. That happened nearly three years to the day after the estimated $304 million (each!) jet’s first mid-air hover test, at which point the Pentagon pegged the cost at $83 million. Inflation aside, the US Marine’s variant seemed to make a fine, if solid three point landing and Lockheed Martin says it’s made considerable strides in the flight testing program over the last couple of years, despite all the overruns and delays. Hopefully that means the US Marines, Britain’s Royal Air Force et. al. will be able to deploy that capability on their F-35B’s soon — ie, before they’re already obsolete. Check the video after the break.

Update: As commenter daveschroeder pointed out, this is the first vertical landing of a production version of the F-35B. Test copies of the fighter (with test pilots aboard) have been performing the feat since late 2011, so we’ve tweaked the article to make that point clear.

Showcasing The Best Of The 2013 International Home + Housewares Show

Some of the coolest stuff from the 2013 International Home + Housewares Show Although the 2013 International Home + Housewares Show has come and
gone, the convention’s 2,000+ exibitors from 35 nations left us with a
massive hoard of innovative goodies. While there’s no way that I’d be
able to share everything that was presented in Chicago’s ultimate new
product party, but here are a few especially cool things that caught my
eye at this year’s event:

Intel Expects $599 Ultrabooks To Arrive In The Market This Holiday Season

Intel Expects $599 Ultrabooks To Arrive In The Market This Holiday SeasonUltrabooks have started to become popular alternatives to regular laptops due to its thin and slim form factor, and the fact that most Ultrabooks come bundled with speedy SSDs versus regular HDDs found on normal laptops. However Ultrabooks tend to be priced at the higher-end of the market, meaning that customers who don’t see the point in paying $999 for a laptop will not buy one. However according to Intel at the Intel Solutions Summit, Kirk Skaugen, the senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s PC Client Group came out and said that we might be able to look forward to $599 Ultrabooks entering the market this holiday season.

These $599 Ultrabooks are expected to be built on Intel’s Haswell chipset, making it more affordable, but apparently more feature-rich compared to current generation devices. Intel’s reference Haswell model is expected to come with a high-res touchscreen display, speedier SSDs, voice recognition and facial recognition, and best of all, “all-day” battery life which we guess is definitely subject to testing and will vary from user to user. However we have to wonder if dropping the price down to $599, will OEMs have to sacrifice premium materials in favor of plastic (i.e. the Samsung Series 9 uses aluminum for its chassis)?

The ThrowBack App Is An Interesting Way To Recall Photos And Memories

The ThrowBack App Is An Interesting Way To Recall Photos And MemoriesPhotos are a great way to remember the good times that we had with friends and family, and have you ever noticed that while combing through old photos on Facebook or your computer that you are overwhelmed with a sense of nostalgia? If you love that feeling and want to relive it on a random or perhaps specified time basis, an app called ThrowBack might be just what the doctor ordered. Designed from ground up by programmer Calli Higgins, ThrowBack is an app that snaps photos and instead of storing the photos on your phone, it instead uploads the photos onto a server.

From there, users can choose to have the photos emailed to them at random, or at a specified time ranging between one month to five years in the future, ultimately increasing the sentimental value of the photos. According to Higgins, she got the idea for the app after her stepbrother died in a car accident, and while sitting in her apartment, she came across an old camera with an undeveloped roll of film in it which contained photos from a family vacation with her stepbrother in there. Looking at those old photos overwhelmed her, but the rush of feelings and memory allowed her to be transported back in time.

It’s an interesting concept and if you’d like to try it for yourself, the app is free for download via the iTunes App Store.

Samsung Galaxy S4 To Arrive On T-Mobile 1st May

Samsung Galaxy S4 To Arrive On T Mobile 1st MayPlanning on picking up the brand new Samsung Galaxy S4 for yourself when it arrives in the US? While a rough timeframe has been given for its US release, T-Mobile has come forward and announced that come 1st of May, the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be available for purchase via T-Mobile. Pricing for the phone and the repayments have not been made official yet, but T-Mobile did state that Galaxy S4 owners will be able to choose from plans starting as low as $50. The Galaxy S4 will be launched with T-Mobile’s new pricing scheme which basically involves the customer putting a downpayment for the phone and making monthly repayments over a period of time.

Considering that T-Mobile has priced other flagship devices like the HTC One and the iPhone 5 at $99 on their new scheme, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Samsung Galaxy S4 received the same treatment as well. T-Mobile’s announcement of the Galaxy S4’s availability makes them the first carrier in the US to offer an official launching date, but for all we know other carriers might offer the phone earlier or later, but we guess we will just have to wait and see.

LG Issued Patent For A Phone With Three Displays

LG Issued Patent For A Phone With Three DisplaysPhones these days are getting pretty big, especially with devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and the LG Optimus G Pro that seem to blur the line between a smartphone and a tablet. The question is, is there a better way to offer more content on the screen without having to stretch out the pockets on our pants? Well LG might have come up with something back in 2010 thanks to a recently issued patent that reveals LG’s plans for a smartphone with three displays. As it stands there are flip smartphones in Japan that have twin displays, although triple displays probably takes the cake.

The drawing above should be able to give you a pretty good idea of what LG had in mind, which is basically a main display with two smaller displays that can be slid out when needed. These smaller side panel displays appear to offer users options and controls, while the main LCD focuses on the content. Like in the drawing above, one side panel can be used to display photos in a gallery, while the main screen is the camera, while the other side panel offers camera options. We have to say it sounds like a pretty cool idea, although that means we will most likely be spending a lot of time in landscape mode if we were to fully take advantage of the additional displays. We’re not sure if LG will ever make this a reality, but what say you?

Boxee TV Update Adds Vudu 3D Content And DLNA Streaming From Computers And Mobile Devices

BoxeeTV-straight

Boxee TV has a new firmware update making its way out to its connected set-top boxes this week, which includes a number of big improvements including the addition of DLNA streaming. Spotted by GigaOM, the update also adds 3D streaming of content from Vudu, the video streaming service from Walmart, and changes to its TV guide and notification settings.

Boxee TV is the follow-up to Boxee’s original hardware, the Boxee Box. That first-gen device actually had DLNA streaming while the Boxee TV shipped without it. The addition of DLNA means that the Boxee TV can now play back media over a local network from a computer or drive running DLNA server software, and can also play content from select Android devices and from a number of iOS apps. Photos, video and music can all be shared via the DLNA streaming protocol. It’s like a non-Apple-specific version of AirPlay, and it’s a very handy addition to Boxee TV that considerably increases its general usefulness.

The Boxee TV also now gets on-device DVR management, which is a big improvement over the old system where you can to schedule recordings via a website on a separate computer. In other words, this whole update seems to have been about ironing out the kinks and making sure the Boxee TV fully delivered on the generally good impressions it received when it launched late last year.

If you’re in the market for a set-top streaming device, the update makes Boxee TV a good option for consumers who might be looking at either an Apple TV or the new Roku 3, but who want a DLNA-capable device to handle streaming of their own media collection. Like both of those devices, the Boxee TV retails for $99.

Samsung Galaxy S4 S Voice, Wallpapers And Ringtones Leaked And Available For Download

Samsung Galaxy S4 S Voice, Wallpapers And Ringtones Leaked And Available For DownloadWhen one purchases an iPhone, they can expect that the core features will be available no matter which iPhone they use. Android devices on the other hand vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, with some manufacturers tweaking the operating system and adding features of their own to stand out from the competition. Samsung has been doing that with their TouchWiz UI and features like S Voice which is limited to Samsung Galaxy phones like the S3 and the S4.

However if you wanted to get S Voice and other Galaxy S4 features on your Android phone without having to buy the Galaxy S4 for yourself, you’re in luck because the folks at SamMobile have stumbled across several leaks that allows the S Voice APK to be downloaded on your device, along with Full HD wallpapers and ringtones from the Galaxy S4. We can’t speak for the quality of the S Voice APK as it is possible that this might have been taken from the pre-release firmware, meaning that it might not be as stable as you would think. In any case download these at your own risk, but let us know in the comments below as to how it is treating you.

iPhone 6 To Feature Fingerprint Sensor, Feature To Skip The iPhone 5S [Rumor]

iPhone 6 To Feature Fingerprint Sensor, Feature To Skip The iPhone 5S [Rumor]Fingerprint security sounds like a pretty solid way of securing your devices, although after watching countless movies, thieves may not only steal our phone, but could end up chopping off one of our digits as well. Pretty scary stuff, right? However if you do not believe that will happen, or at least be a rare occurrence, then how do you feel about an iPhone with a fingerprint sensor that could act as a security measure? We’ve all heard the rumors that future iPhones could come with said technology, especially after Apple’s acquisition of security firm AuthenTec last year.

Many speculated that this feature would make its way into the iPhone 5S which could be seeing a release later this year, but Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster, believes otherwise and claims that the fingerprint sensor will instead arrive on Apple’s iPhone 6, a rumored 4.8” device that according to Munster, will be revealed in Q1 2014. A rather odd date since Apple has of late revealed their phones towards the later part of the year, but then again with Apple releasing the iPad 4 less than a year after the iPad 3, we don’t see why not.

We’re not sure what the fingerprint sensor could do, or if it is even needed, but we guess it could give Apple an advantage in the enterprise and government sector if they could offer not just more secure software, but hardware as well. In the meantime we will be taking this with a grain of salt and suggest you do the same.
