Metro Areas With Highest And Lowest Well-Being

Where do the happiest and healthiest people live in the United States?

A new ranking from Gallup and Healthways researchers reveals which U.S. metro areas have the highest and lowest well-being, based on healthy behaviors, emotional and physical health, work environment, access to basic services and life evaluation. There were 189 metro areas included in the ranking, which was based on phone interviews with 353,563 people conducted throughout 2012.

Researchers found some differences between the metro areas that scored higher for well-being and those that scored lower. Those that scored higher had better physical health — in that they had lower hypertension, obesity and diabetes rates — and they also had more positive views of their living environment (seeing it as “getting better as a place to live”).

Nintendo video shows off Wii U speed improvement coming in April update

Nintendo video shows off Wii U speed improvement coming in April update

Nintendo’s Wii U has faced complaints over slow loading and switching between menus since launch, but the company has promised a pair of updates will help the situation. Tonight it posted a video on YouTube (embedded after the break) that shows off the difference before and after the April update side by side. Showing off how quickly it can return to the home menu from a game of New Super Mario Bros. U, the updated console is ready to go in eight seconds, compared to the current software’s 20-second delay. There’s no mention of the other update to improve the speed of launching software, but hopefully that will be shown off soon as well. More than halving the main menu’s load time is nothing to sneeze at, although it’s still not exactly a snappy experience. We’ll see if these tweaks — once they arrive — do anything to improve the console’s position while it waits for the improved software lineup President Satoru Iwata is expecting.

Liat Kornowski: ‘New Girl’ Season 2, Episode 20 Recap: ‘Chicago’

Note: Do not read on if you have not yet seen Season 2, Episode 20 of Fox’s “New Girl” titled “Chicago.”

After the incredible episode we were rewarded with last week, this week might seem at first like a let-down, but it isn’t. It’s life. And real life sometimes changes your plans and keeps you grounded, just like in Nick’s case when his dad, Walt, unexpectedly passes away from a heart attack. The grieving gang heads out to Chicago, Nick’s hometown, for the funeral.

The trio arrives at The Miller home, where Nick spent his childhood except for the fall of ’88 to the spring of ’89 — which was their van year — to find his crazy family being it’s crazy self. His younger brother Jamie is understandably yet overly distraught (and is a spitting image of Nick, by the way), his mother doesn’t have anything planned and the irresponsible Nick Miller we know and love is forced to take on a different role: that of the grownup. Turns out, with his father coming and going, even as a young man Nick had to step in and take care of his family.

Perhaps the most exciting feature found in Flipboard 2.0 is the ability to create your own magazines based on content you like. Users can collect pictures, audio, videos, and articles, then aggregate them into a single magazine for easy viewing. That magazine can be kept private for personal use, or it can be shared with the public for others to enjoy. It doesn’t take much to see various ways this could come in handy to users.

In addition, users can use a bookmarklet via their browser to flip just about anything online, where it will be added to one’s personal magazine in an easily browsed format. Magazines created by other users are also available via the Content Guide’s “By Our Readers,” showing off user-made magazines from select users. Speaking of the Content Guide, it now boasts a redesign with a red ribbon bearing personalized table of contents, notifications, and more.

Comments can be viewed and left for stories, in addition to @mention-format user tags. There are now reading recommendations as well listed under Cover Stories, with a list of items generated based on user activity. Subsections have been added to partner magazines for faster browsing, while related content can now be pulled up in publications via the section name.

Here’s Everything Wrong with The Hobbit

Our friends at Cinema Sins found 45 things wrong with The Hobbit and I’m just going to assume all 45 of those things are because of the 48FPS that Peter Jackson chose to use for reasons unknown. Or I guess it could also be because the movie just wasn’t any good. [Cinema Sins] More »
