Researchers develop world’s thinnest invisibility cloak

Researchers have created what some are dubbing the real-world equivalent of Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak, which measures in at just 0.15mm thin, a far cry from the bulky invisibility devices that have been created in the past. In addition, rather than using metamaterials like other invisibility cloaks, this one is made from copper and polycarbonate.

Cloak

The cloak was developed by researchers at the University of Texas in Austin, with the material being wrapped around the cylinder you see in the image above. There’s a wrapping of copper and polycarbonate, with the copper being patterned, causing scattered light from the object and cloak to be cancelled out. In this case, the cloak successfully hides objects from microwaves, such as what is used by radars.

Before you get too excited at the thought of slipping into a thin sheet of invisibility and using it for various sorts of entertainment, realize that it doesn’t produce the same effect with visible light – yet, anyway. For now, the cloak can only hide objects from visible light that are a micrometer in size, meaning it is only effective if you need to hide a skin cell or two.

The project’s co-author Andrea Alu says that cloaking objects from visible light is possible, however. “In fact, metascreens are easier to realize at visible frequencies than bulk metamaterials and this concept could put us closer to a practical realization.” And with this device’s super thin design and use of conventional materials, it is both an exciting development in its own right, and also a glance at what the future holds.

Insert Coin: Duo kit lets you build your own 3D motion tracker

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you’d like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with “Insert Coin” as the subject line.

Insert Coin Duo kit lets you build your own 3D motion tracker

Between the Kinect and Leap Motion, gesture control’s on just about everyone’s minds these days. There’s still a ways to go, certainly, before such devices become a mainstream method for interfacing with our PCs, but they’ve already become a ripe source of inspiration for the DIY community. Duo’s hoping to further bridge the gap between the two, with a “the world’s first 3d motion sensor that anyone can build.” The desktop sensor features two PS3 Eye cameras that can track hands and objects for a more natural interface with one’s computer. Duo’s unsurprisingly looking to crowdfund its efforts. A pledge of $10 or more will get you early access to the company’s SDK. For $40 you’ll get the case and instruction. Add $30 to that number, and you’ve got yourself the kit, which includes everything but the camera ($110 will get you all that). Check out the company’s plea after the break, and if you’re so inclined you can pledge at the source link below.

HTC announces that it is preparing J Butterfly successor

The HTC J Butterfly was a big hit last year when it was launched, boasting the world’s first full HD 5-inch display and churning up demand for high-definition phablets. The handset later made its way to other locations, including the United States, as the Droid DNA, which is nearly identical to the J Butterfly. Now word has it a successor is in the making.

According to Focus Taiwan, HTC’s Chief Marketing Officer Ben Ho said the company will be rolling out the J Butterfly’s successor due to consumer demand for both that particular handset and its market segment in general. The handset will have the Butterfly branding, but its name and the timeline for its release weren’t provided.

It looks like a name change is a possibility, however, with Ho’s phrasing leaving that an option. “We have no plans for the time being to change the name of this series,” he is quoted as saying. The J Butterfly was released as the Droid DNA in the United States, among other places, with only very slight differences, and while Ho only mentioned the J Butterfly, it is possible we’ll see an updated DNA rolled out as well.

As pointed out on Android Community, HTC’s One flagship handset will likely not be arriving at Verizon, and combined with the rumors of a DNA+ that have been surfacing, it is possible the carrier could be releasing a next-generation version of the handset this year. Regardless, we’ll be keeping an eye out for more details as they surface, so stay tuned!
