Robert Ethan Saylor, Disabled Man Who Died In Custody, Had Heart Problem

BALTIMORE — A man with Down syndrome who died of asphyxia after he was restrained by deputies at a movie theater had anger issues and health problems that made him susceptible to sudden death, according to an autopsy report made public Tuesday.

The report by the Maryland medical examiner’s office provides new public details about the death of Robert Ethan Saylor, 26, of New Market. He died Jan. 12 after three Frederick County sheriff’s deputies, moonlighting as mall security guards, tried to remove him from a Frederick movie theater at the management’s request.

AT-AT Walker Loft Bed for Hothy Dreams

I would sleep like a Jedi in this awesome AT-AT bed, while dreaming about laying waste to Hoth. Pew, Pew, Pew! Take that rebel scum! What’s that? Pesky Snowspeeders? They are nothing. Wait what? What’s that cable. The legs are all wobbly. We’re going down! Whew! It was only a dream. An amazing dream in an amazing bed!

This giant AT-AT loft bed is the best bed ever. Some lucky kid is smiling every night as he lays down inside of this thing.

I don’t know who the parents are that built this awesome thing, but I am kidnapping them and taking them home. I’ve already bought the supplies. Now work, damn you.

AIA crowdfunds a space program ad that would run in front of Star Trek (video)

Aerospace industry wants a NASA ad in front of Star Trek, prefers real space travel video

As a federal agency, NASA can’t run commercials — a problem both for rallying broader public support and fostering the next generation of astronauts. The Aerospace Industries Association has both cultural and very practical reasons for improving that public awareness, so it’s taking the unusual step of crowdfunding an ad purchase to get the American space program in front of as many eyes as possible. The project would cut a 30-second version of NASA’s We Are the Explorers promo (after the break), minus the administration’s official endorsement, and run it in at least 50 major movie theaters for eight weeks following the launch of Star Trek Into Darkness on May 17th. The crowdfunding is ostensibly to demonstrate our collective love of space, and would directly translate any money raised beyond the $33,000 goal into ads for more theaters. A cynical industry move? Maybe — but we won’t build starships without a public that’s interested in seeing them beyond movie screens, which makes the ad a noble enough cause in our minds.

Store charges $5 ‘showrooming’ fee to looky-loos

It's a sign of the times. (Click to enlarge.)

Celiac Supplies, a Brisbane, Australia, store specializing in gluten-free groceries, has unveiled a shopping policy that has fired up the controversy around “showrooming,” the act of checking out products in-person at a store and then going online to buy them for a lower price.

Celiac Supplies posted a sign notifying customers of a $5 fee for in-store browsing. That fee then would be deducted from the cost of any in-store purchase. As images of the store’s sign spread on Reddit, so did consumer outrage. Reddit user SimplyGeek summed up the sentiments saying, “I would never walk into a store with this policy. It’s so incredibly ignorant, self-defeating, and hostile to potential customers.”

On Celiac Supplies’ Facebook page, the store responded to inquiries about the issue by saying, “I get some very sick people coming through the door and all occupy 20 to 30 minutes average of time. Like anyone else, I would like … [Read more]

The Pint-Sized ‘Fuel’ Phone Charger Is As Useful As It Is Adorable

fuel-charger

Most of us have faced that sense of dread that comes when our phones lay drained and dysfunctional right when we need them the most. Sure, we could beat ourselves up for not charging them as long as we should have (or perhaps making a bad choice of phones), but that’s where this particularly cute Kickstarter project comes into play. Devotec’s Fuel micro charger is a terribly tiny rechargeable external battery for when a smartphone’s charge goes south at an inopportune moment.

How small is it? Think “clip it to your keychain small.” And it’s shaped like a little gas can! How quaint.

As you could probably guess from its size, there’s only so much juice you’ll be able to squeeze out of this thing. The Fuel’s internal battery is only capable of holding about 220mAh worth of charge, which Devotec figures will give your smartphone up to a half hour of extra talk time — more than enough to fire off a few frenzied emails or to make a brief emergency call or two. I’ve come to appreciate bulkier fare like Mophie’s PowerStation Duo, but folks looking for a pint-sized lifesaver that won’t weigh down their bags will find something to like here.

For this first production run, Devotec is focusing mostly on churning out Fuel chargers with microUSB connectors, but the team is also plugging away on Lightning versions for the iPhone 5s in your life. There’s still no ETA on when to expect them though, so iPhone 5 owners may want to look elsewhere for now — after all, the first-party microUSB-to-Lightning adapter costs nearly as much as the Fuel itself.

Devotec’s Kickstarter campaign launched less than a week ago and the team has already blown past its $20,000 funding goal, but you can still lock in your order for a microUSB model for around $18 at this point. The final retail version will cost $25, so the cheapskates among you may want to jump on this now (like I just did).

2014 Buick Regal unveiled with IntelliLink and efficiency features

Today the 2014 Buick Regal has been made official, infused with new technology from start to finish and looking like a vehicle you’ll certainly have to experience for yourself. This vehicle has been designed by Buick to be a “sportier and smarter” evolutionary mark in the line of successful midsize sedans. You’ll find not only new technology here made to enhance the way you drive, but to enhance the way you drive safely each and every day as well.

This vehicle line works with Adaptive Cruise Control as well as – for the first time – all-wheel drive. With Adaptive Cruise Control your vehicle will be able to sense traffic ahead of it, adjusting speed and stopping the vehicle automatically while in heavy traffic. This vehicle also introduces a set of new technologies in the radar- and camera-based safety features category:

• Rear Cross Traffic Alert
• Lane Change Alert
• Side Blind Zone Alert
• Lane Departure Warning
• Forward Collision Alert
• Collision Mitigation Braking

In the 2014 Buick Regal you’ll also find the next generation of IntelliLink integration – that’s natural speech recognition as well as a set of controls more intuitive than ever before! The new Regal works with a more “expressive” look both inside in out – starting with new front and real styling, signature wing-shape LED daytime running lamps as well as LED taillamps, you’ll also find a fully redesigned central instrument panel and console with new fashion interior trim.

28612995_ttHTbn-18

Under the hood you’ve got a new 2.0L turbo engine (as noted above) with 18 percent more horsepower than with what’s found in the Regal Turbo. The first all-wheel-drive system you’ll be working with here goes by the name Haldex. In addition to rolling out with superior use of the traction you’ve already got, this Haldex all-wheel-drive system will enhanced cornering with the Regal GS when driving in GS mode. That GS mode comes straight from your Interactive Drive Control System – and you’re going to love it!

28612995_ttHTbn-10

You’ve also got the option to work with a 2.4L engine with eAssist light electrification technology on this 2014 Regal model. You’ll be working with six-speed automatic transmissions that are matched with both of your engines and you’ll have a six-speed manual with your Regal GS as well – and electric power steering is featured on all models here and into the future, too.

You’ll Never Hunt For a Tool With Craftsman’s Whiteboard Toolbox

Craftsman is eschewing the traditional bright red paint job of its rolling toolboxes for a stark white finish that’s actually far more functional. The white paint used on its Limited Edition rolling eight-drawer tool chest is dry erase-friendly, so you can label the drawers as per what’s inside, take notes, or make calculations on the sides. Bloomberg: Intel nearing TV service deals with Time Warner, Viacom and NBC

Bloomberg: Intel nearing TV service deals

It’s a very poorly kept secret that Intel is looking to bust in the pay-TV business. Rumors have been circulating since at least December that the chip giant is working on its own set-top box and hopes to pair it with a “virtual cable” service that offers unbundled channels. Of course, content creators are reticent to give up the lucrative package deals they’ve struck, which require providers to serve up smaller outlets alongside popular ones. But the tides are starting to shift, and many are demanding that these channels be offered à la carte. According to Bloomberg, Intel is getting close to offering such a service and is reportedly closing in on deals with Time Warner, Viacom and NBC that would allow them to offer both live and on-demand content over the internet. Sources are reporting that the broad terms of the deal have been agreed to, and its only a few fine details and some financial terms that need to be finalized. Intel is also allegedly in talks with Disney, CBS and News Corp. Though, those negotiations are in the preliminary stages. If Intel can successfully land deals for CNN, Comedy Central, MTV and other properties owned by its supposed new partners then its TV experiment could stand a legitimate chance at success.
