MiiPC Android-powered PC aims at kids

One of the big problems that parents face when their kids reach the age where they’re ready to go online is how to prevent their kids from accessing content that’s inappropriate for their age. The founder of computer maker eMachines has a new computer seeking funding via Kickstarter called the MiiPC. The big feature of this machine is that it gives parents the ability to control access to the Internet using a companion mobile application.

miipc

The MiiPC runs the Android 4.2 operating system and allows users to play all sorts of Android apps right on the TV or computer display. The machine uses a Marvell ARMADA dual-core 1.2 GHz SOC. The machine also has 1 GB of DDR memory and 4 GB of internal storage. Storage can be expanded via an integrated SD card slot.

The computer also has a USB port supporting external storage devices. The machine has integrated Wi-Fi, an Ethernet port, and Bluetooth 4.0 built-in. The little computer is designed to connect directly to a TV via an HDMI port supporting up to full HD resolution content. Other features include a pair of USB 2.0 ports, a speaker input, and microphone jack.

One of the key features is companion mobile application that is available for both Android and iOS users. This application allows parents to monitor real-time Internet usage right from their smartphone. Parents can also use that app to limit the amount of time children can spend on the computer in any given day. The app supports multiple user accounts as well. The project is seeking $50,000, and has raised over $49,000 so far. With the early bird special, a pledge of $89 will get one of the computers when it ships this July.

Apple Patents Battery-Saving Multi-Touch Displays That Don’t Need To Be Active To Work

Screen Shot 2013-03-26 at 7.25.16 AM

Apple was granted a patent Tuesday by the USPTO (via AppleInsider) that describes a system for implementing multi-touch in a mobile device even when there the display itself isn’t actively showing any images. It’s a neat trick, and one that could help portable gadgets save battery life by not invoking the most battery-hungry element in their construction nearly as frequently.

The patent also notes that the screen doesn’t have to be off for these no-look commands to work; a user could do things like swipe a finger in circle to change volume or tracks, for instance, even while a display is active. That adds new control options, but also makes it possible to both remove external buttons should a design benefit from that, and also make the device easier to use when in a pocket or clipped to an armband or waist during a workout.

While the display is inactive, the patent describes that it could use gestures that mirror the button press actions on current iPod and iPhone headphone remotes. So, a single click could play/pause, a double click could skip tracks, and a long press could call up Siri, for instance.

In terms of recognizing when touch is and is not wanted, the patent suggests implementing a special mode that would allow it to both keep the screen dark but also receive touch inputs. This might involve a way to activate a mode between a full lock and a completely on and active device, which can be selected specifically for when a user is commuting or using the device while working out, but disabled when there’s risk of accidental touch.

It’s an interesting patent, and one which Apple has shown off as working with its previous iPod nano design, which essentially featured a square display and little else in terms of physical buttons. The trick might be making this work in such a way that it still completely eliminates any chance of accidental input – the lock screen concept is synonymous with touchscreen devices for a reason, after all.

Not activating the screen as much as possible is the key to prolonging device battery life, though, so it’s good to see Apple looking at ways to deal with that primary limiting factor. It’s no e-ink display built into the back of a smartphone, but it’s something.

Texas Instruments 4.5-amp lithium-ion battery charging circuit cuts charge time

BQ24190Texas Instruments is a major technology company that develops chips and internal components for a variety of gadgets and electronic devices on the market today. The company has announced a new lithium-ion battery charger and integrated circuit that promises significantly faster charging compared to other solutions on the market today. The new Texas Instruments product is the bq2419x family of 4.5-amp output, 20-V input-rated switch-mode chargers.

The new integrated circuit has an I2C interface and supports USB OTG. Texas Instruments promises that its new integrated circuit not only delivers faster charging, but delivers cooler charging to a wide range of products including power banks and packs, 4G LTE routers, Wi-Fi speakers, portable medical devices, smartphones, tablets, and more. Samsung Sues LG For “Tarnishing” Their Brand

Samsung Sues LG For Tarnishing Their BrandSo we have heard that Samsung and LG are at each other’s throats these days. Considering that both South Korean brands are in the same business, i.e. home appliances, televisions, computer displays, and smartphones, it is not surprising that they would eventually clash over legal issues.

While LG is looking into the possibility of Samsung allegedly infringing upon their patent for the Smart Pause video feature on the Galaxy S4, Samsung on the other hand has sued LG, claiming that LG has “diminished” their brand and tarnishing the company’s image by running advertisements that are wrong.

The feud is over an advertisement LG released last year for a refrigerator that LG claims has the largest capacity. Samsung countered this by releasing a YouTube video of their own showing the difference. LG countered them by asking for a 10 billion won compensation, and ran new ads against Samsung. Samsung is now asking LG for 50 billion won (~$45 million) in damages over this matter.

Spotify Rumored To Be Interested In Video Streaming And Original Content As Well

Spotify Rumored To Be Interested In Video Streaming And Original Content As WellSpotify is probably well-known to music lovers as a service in which they are able to stream songs. However according to recent rumors, perhaps streaming songs isn’t enough for the company and word has it that perhaps videos might be next on the list. Sources have indicated that Spotify is currently on the lookout for partners who can help them fund and create exclusive content for this alleged new service. If this is true and Spotify’s new venture takes off, this would pit them against the likes of Netflix who not only offer movies owned by movie studios, but who produce video content of their own, such as the original series House of Cards.

The reason behind Spotify’s alleged interest in video is because they aren’t making enough money from music alone. Since the music is owned by the major labels, a large chunk of royalties are instead paid to these labels rather than to Spotify, so we guess if Spotify were to create its own video content, they would be able to pocket most of the profits made from there. With the rise of smartphones and tablets, streaming videos and movies on the go has never been easier, although at this point in time we suggest you take this rumor with a grain of salt, but what do you guys think? Anyone interested in seeing Spotify start to offer video streaming as well?

Moshi Unveils Luna Keyboard For Mac With Backlit Keys

Moshi Unveils Luna Keyboard For Mac With Backlit KeysAre you in the market for a new keyboard for your Mac computer? If you are, Moshi has unveiled the Luna Backlit Mac keyboard, although with it being priced at $100, it does put it out of the range for consumers who are simply looking for an alternative to Apple’s own brand of Mac keyboards. However if the design above is striking already and you wouldn’t mind getting your hands on it, here’s some of the specifications of the accessory. The keyboard will feature Mac-friendly media keys, a numerical keypad and will come with scissor-switched chicklet keys, somewhat similar to Apple’s default Mac keyboard. If you’re looking for something low-profile and somewhat “quiet” in terms of typing, then this will do the job. The Moshi Luna keyboard will plug to your Mac via USB, although it should be noted that it does not offer additional USB ports which seems commonplace for wired keyboards, so that should be taken into consideration. More information about the Moshi Luna Mac keyboard can be found on Moshi’s website.
