Hon Hai Swims In Money With Record Profits

Hon Hai Swims In Money With Record ProfitsHave you heard of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. before? Sure you have, you can more or less say that thanks to the wonder that is called the Apple iPhone, the company has managed to turn over a handsome profit this quarter – in a record figure, to boot, being the world’s largest contract manufacturer of electronics while they are at it. Fourth-quarter net income actually managed to increase by another 5.6% to $1.2 billion, which is more than what 14 analyst estimated prior.

In order to break their previous record, Hon Hai managed to solve production issues that affected output of the iPhone 5 in the previous quarter, which certainly helped the company raise revenue and margins along the way. As for the Taipei-listed flagship of Terry Gou’s Foxconn Technology Group, who is also their rival in one way, Foxconn could very well face a drop in sales and profit this quarter, no thanks to the possible wane in iPhone demand with Samsung’s aggressive marketing of their smartphones. We do wonder, however, where would Hon Hai be in the large scheme of things if Apple was not around as one of their major customers.

Fuel The Smallest Cellphone Charger In The World

Fuel The Smallest Cellphone Charger In The WorldWhen it comes to modern day smartphones and cellphones, the one Achilles Heel that they have would be the battery life, where for some power users, that would mean the lack of it. Well, whenever you travel, even if just for a day, it is wise and of course advisable to bring around your mobile charger as you can never quite tell just when you need more juice than normal. Most chargers have been minimized in design for some time already, but if there is a chance for change, why not?

This is where the Kickstarter project known as Fuel comes in, where it is touted to be the smallest cellphone charger in the world when realized. Devotec is the company behind its design, where Fuel would measure a mere 1” in height, and approximately 0.5” wide. This makes it tiny enough to fit onto a keychain or in a small pocket, but there is one potential drawback – its battery life, no thanks to its size. Fuel is meant to be a real emergency life saver, where it helps you run your smartphone for another 20 minutes to half an hour just in case of an emergency, which ain’t too shabby, actually, thanks to its 5C lithium-ion 220mAh rated battery.

Wi-Fi Poster Provides Mobile Hotspot Capability

Wi Fi Poster Provides Mobile Hotspot CapabilityWe more or less take Wi-Fi connectivity for granted these days, especially with the easy accessibility in public areas, including your local Starbucks. Well, the thing is, there might just be a new method of spreading the goodness of Wi-Fi connectivity in public areas and spaces without missing a beat, and this new innovation is known as the Wi-Fi poster, where it is being shown off in South Korea at this point in time, which could very well point to a new and growing trend that intends to draw Wi-Fi users closer to Hollywood.

The Wi-Fi Poster will work just like it is named, where mobile users will be able to enjoy wireless access whenever they remain in close proximity to a particular movie poster. Creative agency Cheil is the one behind this idea for South Korea film studio CJ Entertainment, where Wi-Fi Posters will make use of the name of the film that is currently being promoted for the Wi-Fi network, and once users are connected, they can check out the associated trailers as well as more details on the movie directly on their respective mobile devices.

Summly Sold To Yahoo For $30 Million

Summly Sold To Yahoo For $30 MillionIt looks like there is yet another young millionaire in town, and it has nothing to do with the showbiz or sports business, but rather, under the banner of technology. British teen Nick D’Aloisio has managed to join this exclusive club, being $30 million richer as he sold his mobile news app known as Summly to Yahoo for that sterling amount. This would rank Nick D’Aloisio as one of the world’s youngest self-made millionaires, and if you think that all of this had to do with dumb luck, think again. Nick taught himself to write software at the tender age of 12, where the built the free iPhone app Summly three years after that.

Despite selling off Summly for that hand-summ amount (sorry, I could not resist that!), he will continue to work out of Yahoo’s office in London. Nick said, “To me, Yahoo is the best company to be joining right now because it’s one of these classic Internet companies. With new leadership from Marissa Mayer, Yahoo has a strong focus on mobile and product, and that’s the perfect fit for Summly.”

Sony Xperia Z bug allows anyone to bypass the lock screen

Joining the likes of Apple and Samsung, Sony has had some issues with bugs providing various levels of security vulnerability, with another one surfacing today. Unfortunately for Sony Xperia Z owners, the method for bypassing its lockscreen is simple and straight-forward, and is another reminder not to presume lockscreens are always secure enough to keep sensitive data safe.

sony_xperia_z_review_sg_6-580x374

Unlike the latest iPhone security issue, the Xperia Z’s method doesn’t involve any fiddling with the SIM card or other physical parts of the phone. Instead, demonstrated in the video attached below by Scott Reed, who found the issue, you can see the method at work, which involves using the emergency dialer.

After pulling up the emergency dial pad, the user only needs to type in *#*#7378423#*#*, which then brings up the service menu. Via the service menu, the user then needs to use the NFC > NFC Diag Test, at which point the home button can be pressed and the home screen accessed. The bypass is easy enough for anyone to replicate.

This follows shortly after a new bug has surfaced with the iOS 6.1.3 update that fixes one security bypass issue while introducing a new one, which involves using voice command and ejecting the SIM card at a certain time. Likewise, Samsung has had issues with some of its Galaxy devices providing lock screen bypass vulnerabilities.

Latest Hulu rumors suggest it could be up for sale, again

While viewers enjoy promotions like free Star Trek and Kurosawa, Hulu’s owners are once again considering selling the video streaming site. The last bit of news was that News Corp and Disney were considering buying one another out, but according to Reuters, anonymous sources confirm that the board is reaching out to several potential buyers while it considers its options. Another possibility from Variety suggests that the two would remain as part owners, and welcome another party to join, perhaps CBS. This wouldn’t be the first time Hulu’s owners tried to sell the site however, as it went through the whole process — without changing hands — back in 2011. Perhaps this time, with a new CEO in place, all the companies involved can figure out what they want Hulu to be going forward.
