Unreal Engine 3 adding Oculus Rift support this April, Epic Citadel demo packed in

The engine that powered the vast majority of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3’s hit games, Unreal Engine 3, is getting a development kit update to support the soon-to-be-released Oculus Rift VR headset. Of course, the model of the Rift that’s soon-to-be-released is intended for developers, so the Unreal Engine 3 UDK update is right on time; it arrives at some point in “early April,” soon after the headset itself arrives for Kickstarter backers. Beyond UDK integration, full UE3 licensees will also get an update for integrating the headset into their games.

That said, if you snagged yourself a Rift dev kit and have no intention of actually developing games with it, the upcoming UDK release also includes a “VR Mode” version of the software’s sample Unreal Tournament game, as well as a summer version of the Epic Citadel demo we were shown at CES 2013. Paired with Valve’s offering of Team Fortress 2 VR Mode, that brings the grand total of playable things with the Rift headset to … five or six (depending on what you define as a “demo”). Upcoming PC mech shooter Hawken is also promising Rift support, though it won’t launch until mid-December. The Oculus folks are saying that Rift dev kits will begin shipping to Kickstarter backers this month, with orders fulfilled by mid-April.

Top Chinese university linked to Chinese hacking group

Faculty members at one of the top universities in China have been linked to the People’s Liberation Army Unit 61398, the same group that has been accused of hacking several U.S. based companies as well as several media outlets. The university in question, Shanghai Jiaotong University, is a prestigious school known for its successful graduates, most who end up doing well in politics and in business.

Top Chinese school linked with Chinese espionage group

While Shanghai Jiaotong University is linked with PLA Unit 61398, there’s no evidence that shows that they were involved in the cyber-espionage attacks against the United States. However, faculty at the university’s School of Information Security Engineering (SISE) have collaborated with the PLA Unit on several research papers centered around cyber-security.

Xue Zhi, the Vice President of SISE and who is also well known for developing China’s leading cyber-attack platform, collaborated with Chen Yi-qun, a researcher for the PLA, on a paper about improving security by designing a collaborative network monitoring system. Fan Lei, an associate professor at the university, also worked on a research paper with Chen. Fan said, however, that he had no idea Chen was part of PLA Unit 61398 and that he only worked with him because he was a SISE graduate. His statement was proven false by the research paper, which clearly stated that Chen was part of the PLA unit.

While most of these papers are centered mainly around cyber-security, the information can also be used to develop efficient cyber attacks. Adam Meyers, the Director of Intelligence at a security tech company named CrowdStrike, stated, “The research seems to be defensive, but cyber-security research can be dual purpose.” He goes on to say that in order to develop the best cyber security, one must think “about the most effective means of attack.”

Body Part Bakery: The Walking Bread

Zombies are all the rage these days, so it was only a matter of time before us humans would try to get into the flesh-eating action. You know, we always imitate what we see in video games and TV, right? Well at the Body Bakery, you can eat other humans, without actually eating other humans.

zombie head bread

Thai artist Kittiwat Unarrom created this series of disturbingly realistic body parts out of bread, decorating them in excruciating detail.

Incredibly, all of the dismembered body parts you see here are completely edible, from the head, to the arms to the torso, right down to the toes.

Lest you think Kittiwat is just jumping on the current zombie trend with his creations, he actually first started making these disgusting delicacies back in 2007.

Alpha Centauri Bb Needs A Better Name; Uwingu Offers Prizes In Planet-Naming Contest

This is a mighty large universe. Somebody has got to name all the far-flung planets in it. Maybe that should be you.

It’ll cost you almost five bucks to do it, but, hey, it’s all in the name of science and, oh yeah, there will be prizes for the best new planetary names.

Last August, a group of astronomers, planetary scientists, former space program executives and educators came together to form a space-themed company called Uwingu (which means “sky” in Swahili). Their purpose is to generate projects to raise money for space exploration research and education.

Zombieland TV Series May Come To Life On Amazon Prime

Zombieland TV Series May Come To Life On Amazon Prime

Zombieland the movie was released back in 2009. It is safe to say that the movie was a hit. Its fans will no doubt be happy to hear that a Zombieland TV series may come to life on Amazon Prime, provided that enough viewers like the pilot to warrant the production of an entire TV series. The service is moving in to production of original content, much like its rivals Hulu and Netflix. Amazon Studios will be producing 13 pilots, seven comedy and six for children, and it will ultimately be up to Amazon Prime viewers to decide which of these pilots will bite the dust.

Amazon has not given a release date for these pilots, only adds that they will be coming soon. Along with Zombieland, the six comedy pilots include Alpha House, Browsers, Dark Minions, Onion News Empire, Supanatural and Those Who Can’t. The six pilots aimed for children are The Untitled J.J. Johnson Project, Creative Galaxy, Teeny Tiny Dogs, Oz Adventures, Tumbleaf and Sara Solves It. Amazon believes that adding original content will make Prime more enticing for users, can’t say I don’t agree with them on that.

Florida Gulf Coast, Wichita State, La Salle Show NCAA Tournament Seeding No Longer Matters

If the NCAA Tournament’s opening weekend taught us anything, it’s that the difference between a No. 1 or 2 seed and a 9 seed, let alone a 14 or 15 seed, is minuscule. Parity clearly rules in college basketball. Though pessimists might say the game is “watered down,” the lack of one elite team (with all due respect to Rick Pitino’s Louisville Cardinals) and the abundance of very good teams both have become more apparent and made the tournament more engaging.

Florida Gulf Coast University and its up-tempo, transition-based attack dominated Georgetown in the second half in the second round and did the same to San Diego State in the third. Wichita State’s seven straight triples buried Gonzaga (which barely held on against Southern University in the round of 64), and Harvard controlled powerful New Mexico with the long ball as well. Ohio State, playing a de facto home game in Dayton, needed what was at best a questionable charge call to overcome a furious rally from Iowa State in the round of 32. Even Indiana barely survived a nearly fatal scare from 9 seed Temple on Sunday, during a game in which the Owls led by four with less than 3 minutes remaining.

Is this not the beauty of the tournament, though? Is this not why we love March with such conviction?

Oregon’s Grant High School Creates Gender-Neutral Restrooms For Transgender Students

An Oregon high school is being praised after creating gender-neutral restrooms for its transgender students and staff.

As The Oregonian is reporting, Portland’s Ulysses S. Grant High School has opted to distinguish six of its restrooms (four for students, and two for staff) for the five to 10 transgender students at the school.

“We just need to make sure that all students are safe and comfortable here, and that they have their needs met,” Kristyn Westphal, Grant High’s vice principal, told the publication. “If they feel unsafe using the bathroom, that’s a problem.”

Senate Shows Unanimous Support For Ending Too-Big-To-Fail Subsidy

In these hostile times, it’s heartening to see there’s still one thing able to bring Republicans and Democrats together: hating on banks.

The U.S. Senate late Friday night agreed unanimously, by a vote of 99-0, to end whatever financial-market subsidy banks get by being too big to fail.

Unfortunately, the vote was nothing more than theater without any real world implications: The subsidy measure was non-binding, and it was attached as an amendment to the Democrats’ 2014 budget proposal, which everybody knows is going nowhere.
