‘Dexter’ Season 8: Bethany Joy Lenz, Darri Ingolfsson To Guest Star

If the rumors are true, death may be coming to “Dexter” … but not before a new cast of characters hops on board.

TV Guide is reporting that “One Tree Hill” vet Bethany Joy Lenz has joined the Showtime series as Cassie, “an attractive former finance executive looking for a quieter life” who moves in next door to Dexter.

EW has also confirmed that “Last Resort” actor Darri Ingolfsson has booked a recurring role in the show’s eighth season as an antique dealer of old medieval equipment who starts dating Dexter’s neighbor, presumably Cassie.

Some Pebble smartwatches bricking after shutdown, company replacing faulty units

It appears that Pebble’s smartwatch is officially feeling its largest growing pain since debuting just two months ago. A five-page long (and growing) thread on the company’s forum has some owners describing a bug that’s leaving their Pebbles pebbled bricked after shutdown. Pebble’s Eric Migicovsky let us know that the company is actively replacing affected units, while examining those being sent in to find out the root cause:

We’ve had reports of this issue, and we understand of course that it’s annoying for users. We’re replacing any Pebbles for users who report this issue. We’re reviewing the Pebbles that get returned, working to get to the bottom of the issue. We have our support team ready to follow up to any user that reports this issue.

As it stands, there’s no word on whether firmware update 1.9 has any role in keeping the devices from turning on after being shut down. Owners have further reported that no amount of charging their Pebble will help it to actually come back to life. We’ve reached out to the company for more info on the matter (including nailing down how many units the company has replaced so far), and we’ll be sure to keep you updated. For now, let us know whether your experience with Pebble has been rocky at all so far.

Update: That was fast — apparently Pebble has received about 30 reports of this issue since Friday. Here’s the official word from Migicovsky:

We’re tracking a few reports of this issue. Up to Friday, we’ve had 20-30 reports (out of 30,000+ pebbles in the field). We’ve gotten several back to the office, and we’re getting to the bottom of it.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Microsoft’s Windows Store reaches 50,000 apps milestone

Microsoft has finally has over 50,000 apps in its Windows Store. According to MetroStore Scanner, there are currently 50,304 apps available from the Windows Store as of today. There have been an average of about 279 apps developed daily in March alone. March is the first month in a long time in which Microsoft saw an increase in app development. Since November, app development had been on a rapid decline.

Microsoft's Windows Store reaches 50,000 app milestone

App development for Windows 8 hit its peak in November, with an average of 468 new apps being developed daily. The number dropped down to 412 apps developed daily in December, plummeted to 174 apps in January, and fell even further to 142 apps in February. The new surge in app development is possibly due to Microsoft’s new cash incentive for developers to create apps for its ecosystem.

Microsoft is offering developers $100 per app they develop for Windows 8 or Windows Phone 8. They are allowed to develop up to 10 apps per OS for a grand total of $2000. The contest began on March 8th, and is set to end on June 30th. There will only be 10,000 apps accepted. While $100 per app may not be too enticing to developers, Microsoft is also offering developers a 80% split for revenue generated by their apps. That’s 10% more than what Apple and Android offers.

The statistics account for apps for both Windows 8 PCs as well as Windows RT tablets. So saying that Windows 8 has surpassed the Mac’s available 14,000 apps would be a lie. If you take into account the 370,000+ apps the iPad currently has, the Windows Store is still miles behind in development. Nonetheless, 50,000 apps in 4 months is an impressive milestone, and as more people adapt to Windows 8 and Windows tablets, we should see some great advancements for the OS in the future.

Mali Conflict: Radical Islamists Attack City Of Gao

DAKAR, Senegal — Islamic extremists infiltrated and attacked the northern Malian city of Gao, the mayor and residents said late Saturday. It was the third major attack on the town since it was liberated by French forces in January.

The assault indicates that the radical Islamists remain entrenched and able to attack despite the thousands of French troops who have liberated most of northern Mali’s towns from control by the extremists.

The Walking Dead is coming to the PS Vita

Fans of AMC’s The Walking Dead, as well as fans of zombie apocalypse-based games will be happy to know that The Walking Dead video game will be making its way to the PlayStation Vita. The news was confirmed by IGN, and Telltale says that the game is set to be released sometime this year. The game should be released sometime before the Fall, when season 2 of The Walking Dead is set to launch.

The Walking Dead is coming to the PS Vita

Don Mesa, Director of Product Planning for Sony, says that the company is very excited that Telltale is working together with Sony. He said, “Having (a studio) like Telltale, a very successful indie developer, coming into to support us send a strong message.” Telltale hasn’t said, however, whether the game will be released as an entire season, or if it’ll be released episode by episode.

Having developers still create/port their popular titles to the PS Vita is a sign of reassurance for the game console, and it should help boost sales of the system. The PlayStation Vita had a hard time nabbing sales after launching. Eventually, Sony decided to reduce the price of its PS Vita gaming system in Japan, and saw the sales for the system quadruple. Because the Japanese version of the PS Vita did so well after being discounted, Sony decided to extend the same discount to the United States. To ensure the stability of sales for the PS Vita, Sony will need more and more developers to bring games over to the device.

Many gamers are excited to see this game available for their PS Vitas. They will soon be able to play through the horrifying, gory storyline in this game anywhere they want. Another game PS Vita gamers can look forward to is the remake of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. The games are currently in development, but have made good progress so far. On March 25th, Square Enix is set to release an announcement trailer for both games. While the games will be sold under one title for the PlayStation 3, PS Vita owners will unfortunately have to pay separately for each game.

Mitch McGary Screen: Michigan Center Levels Briante Weber In Win Over VCU (VIDEO/GIF)

Mitch McGary made quite an impression in Michigan’s NCAA Tournament win over VCU on Saturday. Much of that impression was left in the scorebook but some was left on Briante Weber.

The VCU guard was tracking Michigan’s Trey Burke when he ran into a 6′ 10″ wall wearing a white No. 4 jersey. The freshman center, making just his fourth career start (two in the regular season), stepped into the path of Weber and Burke ran his defender right into the screen. Momentarily freed up, Burked drained a deep step-back jumper to give Michigan a 36-21 lead late in the first half. Weber went down hard enough that McGary may be hearing from Wolverines football Brady Hoke before the Sweet 16.

“I set a good, hard screen and the man happened to run into my chest. It was a legal screen,” McGary told Nick Baumgardner of MLive.com, adding “I didn’t mean, intentionally, for him to fall down. It just happened like that.”

Is Fashion-Conscious Design the Future of the Stapler?

Most of the documents we send these days are digital, but when it comes to attaching the physical ones together, there’s nothing quite as helpful—and satisfyingly clicky—as a good old-fashioned stapler. The New York Times has whipped up a little ode to the device, in appreciation. And the key to staplers’ survival might lay in eye-catching design. More »
