‘Blackboard Wars’ Season Finale: Art Saves Homeless Teen Allen Lefort’s Life (VIDEO)

Life in New Orleans is rough. Eighteen-year-old John McDonogh High School student Allen Lefort ended up homeless after a series of struggles — his father’s overdose and his brother’s death among them. In this clip from the season finale of “Blackboard Wars,” Lefort, after a suicide attempt and an intervention from school principal Dr. Marvin Thompson, opens up about how art has saved him.

“I got into art by my older brother, but he died… and I just took up on what he was doing,” explains Lefort in the clip. “When I do art, it comes from my mind just free. Mellow. It’s like I go into another world.”

As to art and the effect it will have on his future, Lefort has this to say: “This is more than a dream; this is my life right here. This is my way out.”

Paul Ryan Says Obama ‘Charm Offensive’ Was ‘Helpful,’ But It’s Still Knives Out For Obamacare

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) appeared on Greta Van Susteren’s “On The Record” Thursday night to give his side of the story on the ongoing knock-down drag-out budget debate. Ryan, whose re-polished budget plan passed the House but was predictably halted by the Democratic-controlled Senate, said that President Barack Obama’s “charm offensive” was “helpful.” Citing the delays in the White House presenting its budget, however, Ryan averred, “The question is, is it real and will it last? If it is real and if it does last, then I think we’ve got a chance of getting a down payment on the problem fixed.”

Meanwhile, it’s knives out for Obamacare:

RYAN: You know, the dirty little secret about this, Greta, “Obamacare” changes Medicare as we know it. “Obamacare” is the law that puts a board of 15 bureaucrats in charge of cutting Medicare that leads to denied access to current seniors.

Congressional Leadership Fund, GOP Super PAC, Kicks Off 2014 Election With New Ads

WASHINGTON — A Republican super PAC on Friday launched two ads targeting vulnerable freshman Democratic congressmen far ahead of the 2014 elections.

The Congressional Leadership Fund announced cable and digital advertising campaigns against Reps. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) and Joe Garcia (D-Fla.). The ads are identical, knocking each member for votes against Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) budget with a message geared toward suburban women.

“House Democrats refused to support balancing Washington’s budget even though families have to every month,” CLF communications director Dan Conston said in a statement. “American moms deserve to know why Democrats think Washington shouldn’t live by the same rules.”

I See Red

Let’s imagine for a minute that six identical 23-year-old female sextuplets were born and raised in a secluded U.S. town. The town is too small to provide six eligible male bachelors, so the women post their pictures on a nationwide online dating site. Their pictures are almost identical, but the women distinguish themselves by wearing six different-colored plain T-shirts. Based on their profile pictures alone, you might expect them to attract similar levels of interest—but you’d be profoundly wrong.

Kickstarter sees over $100 million pledged towards games

To celebrate the beginning of the PAX East gaming convention this weekend, Kickstarter has announced that the crowd-sourcing project website has surpassed $100 million pledged towards various game projects. Thanks to over 630,000 backers over the past four years, 1,476 gaming projects were able to meet their goal and turn into a reality.

The Games category on Kickstarter includes video games, as well as table-top board games, the most notable successfully-funded projects being Double Fine Adventure, Faster Than Light, and Organ Trail, as well as table-top games like Sentinels of the Multiverse, Mobile Frame Zero, and Cards Against Humanity. Double Fine Adventures raised the most money out of the bunch, racking up over $3.3 million.

Breaking down the past four years but the amount of money raised each year, Kickstarter says that in 2009, the Games category raised a total of $60,601, with 2010 raising $546,362. In 2011, $3,855,692 was pledged, and in 2012, a record $83,144,565 was raised during those 12 months. So far this year, $22,423,264 has been raised, totaling more than all of 2009, 2010, and 2011 combined.

Back in January, Kickstarter announced that all crowd-sourced projects during 2012 raised a total of over $320 million. The company notes that times sure have changed since 2009. A successful gaming project back then was Kingdom Death, which raised $1,741 from 28 backers, with the same project relaunched in 2012 and raising over $2 million.
